Chapter 5

Dragging my tired body back to the old Whitestone pack estate, I stood at the gate longer than I should have.

The wind carried the scent of pine resin and stone moss—familiar, once comforting. Now it only felt like something I was leaving behind.

Seven winters of memories lay within those walls.

Kaiden Fenwick’s voice. His footsteps. His shadow beside mine beneath the silver moon.

All of it… once warm.

Now it only hurt to remember.

I stepped inside anyway.

The great hall was quiet. Too quiet.

Every corner held something of us—woven cords we once braided together, carved wooden charms exchanged during moon rites, the small twin tokens that were said to respond when we were within ten paces of each other.

Fate-bond trinkets.

Things I once believed meant something.

I brought out a large wooden chest and, without calling for help, began placing everything inside.

One by one.

The stitched wolf-and-fawn slippers he had given me during winter solstice.

The twin drinking horns we used during feast nights.

The carved bone tokens that were supposed to “warm” when the other was near.

Even the painted stones from our first oath beneath the Moonstone.

At some point, I stopped thinking.

I only moved.

Like a wolf clearing a den it no longer recognized.

**

Kaiden did not return.

Not for days.

Not for half a moon.

The manor stayed empty of his presence, yet his absence was not new—it was simply now visible.

I spent the nights alone, erasing what remained of us.

Curtains I had chosen. Fur rugs laid across the stone floor. Even the carved bench by the window where he used to sit while I worked.

All gone.

The house slowly returned to how it had been before I ever stepped inside—

cold stone, pale light, empty symmetry.

A place that did not belong to anyone.

Or perhaps… never belonged to me.

**

On the night before I left, I finally tried to reach him.

I stood beneath the old carved pillar where the pack’s listening stone hung and sent my voice through the mind-link.

Kaiden.

No answer.

Again.

Kaiden.

Still nothing.

Then, at last—his voice.

Cold. Distant.

“What is it, Elyria?”

My fingers tightened around the stone charm.

“I’m leaving tomorrow,” I said quietly. “I thought you should know.”

A pause.

Then—

“If you still refuse to admit what you did to Mirella,” he said, voice flat, “and if you are not ready to apologize properly, then there is nothing left for us to discuss.”

The bond snapped shut before I could respond.

Silence filled my mind.

I stood there for a long time after the connection ended.

Then I laughed once.

Soft.

Bitter.

Very small.

“I see,” I whispered to no one.

And that was the end of it.

**

Dawn came pale and thin over the mountains.

I left with only one travel trunk and a sealed scroll of my designs. Nothing else followed me out of that place.

Not a single token.

Not a single memory I chose to carry.

At the gate, I stopped once.

Looked back.

The Whitestone pack estate stood behind me like a forgotten dream—silent beneath the morning mist.

And for the first time…

I felt nothing pulling me back.

Only relief.

—

At the foot of the valley, before I crossed into the outer lands, my sending stone began to warm.

Messages—one after another—flared across the surface like scattered fireflies.

Birthday blessings.

Safe journeys.

Wishes for strength.

For love.

For a good mate.

I read them all.

One by one.

Then I answered them with brief thanks before letting the stone go dark in my palm.

When the final message faded, I closed my eyes.

The wind shifted, carrying the distant howl of another pack beyond the ridges.

Unknown territory.

Unwritten fate.

I exhaled slowly.

Then I turned away from everything I had known.

And walked forward.

“I will be happy,” I said quietly to myself.

Not as a promise anymore—

but as something I finally chose to believe.
