Chapter 4

Gavin had a stable job and worked for the Federal government. The reason he picked me up every day was because the Finance and Trade Building and his workplace were on the same street.

In my opinion, since we were going to get married in the future, we'd better live together in advance, which was more convenient for our work and life.

Unfortunately, his mother strongly opposed it.

That woman, who carried a bit of old-fashioned elegance, couldn't tolerate cohabitation before the marriage, hoping that her son and future daughter-in-law could abide by this.

According to his mother, this was a manifestation of self-respect and self-love for both men and women.

I had no objections. Living together was a matter of different opinions. Living together didn't mean a lack of self-respect and self-love. After all, she was my future mother-in-law. If I could compromise for a while in exchange for a harmonious mother-in-law relationship in the future, I would be fine with that.

Besides, Gavin and I had a long way to go, and there was no need to rush.

But it meant that we didn't have much time to be together every day. Apart from dating, the time we were together the most was during commuting.

Unfortunately, I had to go to the library tonight, and I couldn't go home with him.

A few days ago, my boss, Linda, patted my shoulder and told me that she had high hopes for me. If I could pass the CPA exam this year, she would give me the position she was going to vacate.

I had been working hard in Chicago for so many years to settle down here. Now the opportunity was right in front of me. If I missed it, I would hate myself.

However, the shared apartment was noisy and messy, which was not a good place to study.

I packed up and prepared to go to the library after work. Then my cell phone rang.

"Scarlett, have you finished work?" It was a call from Gavin.

"Didn't I tell you that you don't have to pick me up?"

"I know you're going to study, so I brought you a cup of coffee to refresh yourself."

"Is it just delivering coffee?"

"I want to see you."

I couldn't help but laugh, thinking, "Oh my goodness. How did I happen to meet such a great man?"

I happily ran downstairs and rushed into his arms, only to see the rear car window slowly lowering, revealing a delicate and beautiful face.

"You two get along so well," Eileen said.

I was stunned.

Gavin explained, saying, "I met Miss Solomon on my way and gave her a ride back as it was on my way."

"On the way? On the way again?"

"Why are there so many coincidences today?"

I was annoyed to hear these words now!

If I only had some doubts before, now I could be sure that Eileen did it on purpose. She was trying to interfere with my relationship with Gavin.

"No, I can't give them a chance to be alone. Eileen is very skilled at dealing with men. Many wealthy young men have fallen for her. What if Gavin also falls for her?"

I'm a bit tired today. Let's just go home." I opened the passenger door and sat in.

They both were stunned for a moment. Neither of them expected me to change my mind suddenly.

"Okay, don't push yourself too hard," Gavin said.

I sarcastically remarked, saying, "Miss Solomon, why don't you sleep during the day? You work at night anyway."

I had to say my words sounded a bit offensive.

Eileen ignored my offense and explained with a smile, saying, "It's okay. I'm just a bar manager. I won't do much physical work."

"Tsk, why are you talking like this?" Gavin nudged me with his elbow.

"Are you speaking up for her?"

I had an urge to curse at him, but I caught a glimpse of Eileen in the back seat. "No, this is exactly the result she wants to see."

I gritted my teeth and held back.

"So, you can pretend to be innocent, and so can I."

Eileen took the initiative to talk to me.

I responded with a forced smile.

From time to time, she would chat with Gavin and shift the topic to him.

In the eyes of outsiders, it was just two good female friends chatting, with one's boyfriend joining in the conversation.

Only girls who were during it could sense the various inexplicable meanings in the air.

I secretly calculated that I either had to go back and clarify with Eileen or find a new place to live tomorrow. In any case, I couldn't let the situation continue to evolve. After all, people with ultimate motives were worse than thieves.

On the way upstairs, I rehearsed a script in my mind, preparing to confront her as soon as I entered the room. Regardless of whether she had any ulterior motives or not, I had to state my position first.

As soon as I opened the door, I was dumbfounded.

My mom and my younger brother were sitting on the sofa. Their dark shirts were covered in rural dust and the wind. and sand from the journey.

After Eileen exclaimed, she was about to call the police.

I quickly stopped her, saying that these two were my family members.

"Oh, you must be Miss Solomon. Scarlett told me that she had a roommate. We have something to discuss with Scarlett. Sorry for bothering you. " Mother bowed and stood up, showing a pleasing smile.

I asked, "How did you get in?"

"The key was under the carpet. I found it as soon as I touched it," said my little brother, Jack, proudly, showing no signs of guilt for his unreasonable intrusion.

I didn't have the habit of putting the keys under the carpet. It was Eileen who put them there.

Eileen glanced at them thoughtfully, saying, "You guys go ahead with your talk." Then she went into her room.

"What's the matter?"

"You didn't answer my calls or reply to my messages. Your younger brother is getting married next month. Aren't you coming?"

"I'm too busy lately, so I won't go."

"It's okay if you don't come, but you have to give me the betrothal gift," said Jack with a disdainful expression.

Mother slapped him and told him not to talk nonsense.

"Well, Scarlett, we are short of money due to the house renovation at home. Your younger brother is getting married soon, and he needs money. Can you... Can you spare some money?"

"I knew they wanted my money, so I didn't reply to her message."

"Mom, didn't I give you 60 thousand dollars before? Why is it still not enough?"

She stammered and dared not look at me.

I narrowed my eyes and probed by saying, "Did you enlarge and raise the building?"

Jack sneered, saying, "We couldn't live in that shabby building long ago. Of course, we must rebuild it bigger and higher. Everyone else is doing the same. Take a trip around the village. You will see that no one's house has that stingy look."

I said indifferently and snorted, "The money is not enough, but you want to glorify yourself. If you had honestly followed the original plan, it would have been built and furnished long ago."

"Now, I don't have any money. You and your bride can get married in an unfurnished house."

As his sister, I had done enough.

Jack pointed at my nose and shouted, "Scarlett! You came to Chicago and became wild, right? Don't forget that it was our parents who supported you to go to school. I didn't even go to school. You owe me this!"

"I worked part-time to support myself through college! You dropped out, which was your own choice. Over the years, I've sent a lot of money back home. Speaking of which, everything you eat, use, and live in, is what I've contributed to. I don't owe anything to the Reid family!"

“Scarlett, what are you saying? What do you mean by that? We are all one family. In the future, when you have children, your children will have to call him uncle. So, please help your younger brother."

I shook off her hand and said, "You guys should leave. I don't have any money. If you don't leave, my roommate will call the police."

Jack said angrily and left., "You bitch. If you have the guts, don't go home again."

After hearing his words, my mother quietly looked up at me and chased after him.

I sat on the sofa. My thoughts were a bit scattered.

"It's time to break off contact, but I just can't bring myself to do it."

"In those years, if it weren't for my good grades and the efforts of my homeroom teacher to persuade my parents to apply for financial aid, I probably couldn't attend high school, let alone attend a university in Chicago."

"However, poverty is not the reason I want to escape from that home. It is the gender bias of my parents and the backwardness and ignorance in the mountain village that drive me away."

Eileen came out of the room, wearing a dress with diamonds. She looked at me.

The sound insulation of this room was not good. She probably heard everything.

She nodded at me and left.

She should go to work.

I, who had been confused, just realized that I had forgotten something.

I forgot to have a showdown with her.

"Forget it. I don't have the energy to argue with her anymore. I will move to a hotel tomorrow and find a new place to live. Without the relationship of being my roommate, Eileen can't get close to Gavin anymore."

"I have to ask Gavin to delete her from WhatsApp."

"What are you talking about? Miss Solomon would never be interested in me. She is so beautiful, and she doesn't lack any money. Why would she want to hook up with me?" Gavin thought I was joking with him.

His words made me inexplicably angry. I said, "What do you mean? Am I not pretty enough, or I don't have money, so I am with you? Is she so good that you feel unworthy of her?"

"Anyway, delete her."

"Okay, I'll listen to you. I'll do as you say. Alright."

I hung up the call and searched for rental information online.

After searching for a while, I didn't find any good options. There were no suitable listings that were convenient for Gavin to pick me up there.

But, if it would be inconvenient for him to pick me up, so be it. Anyway, I would have to get up early and work late for the next year, so it wouldn't be convenient for me to commute with him.

Today, Eileen came back unusually early. I hadn't slept yet, and I heard the sound of her opening the door, as well as her intermittent sobbing.

I opened the bedroom door and saw Eileen wiping her eyes and running back to her room.

To be honest, although I had been with her for over three years, I had never understood her. Until today, I didn't know what job she had or who she interacted with. Only when we met in the living room at dusk every day, could I tell from her appearance that she earned a good income.

I sighed and closed the door, thinking, “No matter what, we won't have any connection soon.”
