The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

I lay in bed staring at the ceiling for a few seconds before remembering everything.

Adrian.

The anniversary dinner.

The way my husband had looked at me as if I were the unreasonable one.

By seven o'clock, pancakes were on the table, Ryan's lunchbox was packed, and Adrian's coffee sat in its usual place.

Neither of them thanked me.

The silence stretched between us.

Finally, Ryan looked up.

"Dad, are you seeing Olivia today?"

I nearly dropped my coffee mug.

Adrian didn't.

He simply said, "Maybe."

Ryan grinned.

"Can I come too?"

"We'll see."

I stared at my husband.

"We'll see?"

Adrian finally looked at me.

"What?"

"You don't think that's inappropriate?"

His expression immediately hardened.

"Claire."

That tone again.

The one that meant stop talking.

The one that meant you're embarrassing me.

I put down my fork.

"No. Explain it to me."

Ryan glanced between us nervously.

Adrian exhaled.

"It was dinner."

"You keep saying that."

"Because that's what it was."

I laughed.

A short, humorless laugh.

"If I had dinner alone with my ex-boyfriend and took Ryan with me, would you be saying the same thing?"

His jaw tightened.

"That's different."

"Why?"

"Because it is."

Of course.

That was always his answer.

The rules applied to everyone except Adrian Hale.

Ryan frowned.

"Mom, why do you care so much?"

The question hit harder than anything Adrian had said.

Another reporter pushed forward.

I felt exhausted.

Not angry.

"Move."

Adrian adjusted his sunglasses.

Calm.

"First of all," he said, "stop insulting Olivia."

The reporters froze.

So did I.

Adrian continued.

"She's worked hard to build her career."

The female reporter blinked.

"Insulting her?"

"Yes."

His voice remained cool.

"Suggesting she's involved in some scandal every time she has dinner with a friend is disrespectful."

Right.

The word almost made me laugh.

One reporter quickly asked, "But many fans believe Olivia resembles your wife."

Adrian looked genuinely confused.

Then he shook his head.

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

"No?"

"No."

His eyes flickered toward me.

Then away.

"My wife and Olivia are completely different."

Adrian shrugged.

"My wife stays home."

I felt heat rushing to my face.

He smiled slightly.

The silence that followed was deafening.

Even the reporters looked uncomfortable.

I couldn't breathe.

I managed our home.

His parents.

I recognized him immediately.

The journalist who had texted me last night.
