Chapter 3

I followed my father outside, my heart racing as the howl reverberated through the dense forest surrounding the lodge. The air was thick with the scent of pine and earth, but beneath it, I caught a whiff of something darker—something that made my wolf bristle with unease. The pack members who had gathered outside were tense, their eyes flickering between human and wolf, ready to shift at a moment’s notice.

“What’s going on?” I asked, my voice steady despite the turmoil in my chest.

My father didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he scanned the treeline, his gaze sharp and focused. “We’ve had trouble with rogue wolves lately,” he said finally. “They’ve been testing our borders, looking for weaknesses. I think they’re connected to Sabrina’s betrayal.”

I clenched my fists, the anger I felt toward Sabrina simmering just below the surface. “Rogues? Do you think she’s working with them?”

“It’s possible,” my father replied, his tone grim. “The timing is too convenient to be a coincidence.”

Before I could respond, the sound of rustling leaves and snapping twigs reached my ears. The pack members tensed, their muscles coiled in anticipation. Alpha Josiah stepped forward, his posture commanding.

“Show yourself,” he called out, his voice carrying an authority that brooked no defiance.

For a moment, there was silence, broken only by the whisper of the wind through the trees. Then, from the shadows, a figure emerged. My breath caught as I recognized the tall, lean form of Kyler, my childhood friend and once my closest ally. His dark hair was longer now, his face more rugged, but his eyes—those piercing blue eyes—were the same. Yet, there was something different about him, something that set me on edge.

“Kyler,” Alpha Josiah said, a note of surprise in his voice. “What are you doing here?”

Kyler stepped into the clearing, his movements smooth and predatory. “I came to warn you,” he said, his gaze shifting to me. “The rogues aren’t just testing your borders. They’re preparing for an attack.”

My heart sank. Kyler had always been the one to bring bad news, but this was worse than I had imagined. “Why would they attack now?” I asked, struggling to keep my voice calm.

Kyler’s expression hardened. “They’re desperate. Sabrina promised them power, and now that she’s gone, they’re looking for someone to blame. They think if they take down your father, they can claim Blackwood as their own.”

My father’s jaw tightened, and I could see the strain in his eyes. “How do you know this?”

Kyler hesitated, and my stomach twisted with unease. “I’ve been with them,” he admitted, his voice low. “I left the pack after… after everything that happened. I thought I could find a new life, but I realized too late that they were using me to get information. When I found out what they were planning, I knew I had to come back and warn you.”

My breath caught in my throat. Kyler had left without a word years ago, and I had never understood why. His return now, in the midst of this crisis, felt like a betrayal and a lifeline all at once.

“You left us, Kyler,” I said, my voice shaking with the effort to keep my emotions in check. “You turned your back on the pack, on me.”

“I know,” Kyler said, his eyes dark with regret. “And I’m sorry. But I’m here now, and I want to help.”

Alpha Josiah studied Kyler for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then he nodded, though there was a flicker of doubt in his eyes. “We’ll need all the help we can get,” he said. “But if you betray us again, Kyler, there will be no forgiveness.”

Kyler inclined his head in acknowledgment, the tension in his posture easing slightly. “I understand.”

I looked at Kyler, my heart heavy with conflicting emotions. I wanted to trust him, wanted to believe that he was here to make things right. But the wounds of his departure were still fresh, and the stakes were higher than ever.

“Why now?” I asked, my voice softer. “Why come back now, after all this time?”

Kyler’s gaze softened, and for a moment, the old connection between us sparked to life. “Because I couldn’t stay away, Felicity. Not when I knew you were in danger.”

His words hung in the air between us, charged with a history that neither of us could escape. I wanted to believe him, but the darkness of the situation weighed heavily on my mind. There was no time for old wounds to heal—only for survival.

My father turned to the gathered pack members, his voice carrying the authority of an Alpha. “Prepare yourselves. The rogues will come, and when they do, we will be ready. We fight to protect our home, our family.”

The pack responded with a low growl of agreement, their loyalty to the Alpha unwavering. I felt a surge of pride for my father, for the strength he had instilled in his wolves. But beneath it all was a growing fear—a fear that this battle would cost us more than we could afford to lose.

As the pack dispersed to prepare, I lingered by the lodge, my thoughts swirling. Kyler’s return had stirred up old memories, old feelings I had tried to bury. But there was no time to dwell on the past. The future of Blackwood, the future of my family, depended on the choices we made now.

Kyler approached me, his steps tentative. “Felicity, I—”

“Don’t,” I interrupted, holding up a hand. “We don’t have time to talk about the past. Right now, we need to focus on the pack.”

Kyler nodded, though there was a flicker of hurt in his eyes. “You’re right. I’ll do whatever it takes to protect Blackwood.”

I wanted to believe him, but trust was a fragile thing, and mine had been broken before. “Let’s hope you mean that,” I said, my voice firm. “Because if you’re lying, I’ll make sure you regret it.”

Kyler’s expression was serious, his eyes holding mine with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat. “I’m not lying, Felicity. I swear.”

I held his gaze for a moment longer before nodding. “Good. Then let’s get to work.”

As we turned to join the others, the moon climbed higher in the sky, casting its silver light over the forest. The battle for Blackwood was drawing closer, and with it, the fate of the pack—and perhaps even the fate of the wolves themselves—hung in the balance.
