Chapter 13

Kael ran in his true form, a massive, powerful wolf that covered ground quickly. The change was a relief; his human body was too slow for the urgency in his soul. Yet, even with the instincts of a wolf, the weight of Elara's silence pressed on him. The mate bond was strong; he felt her spirit anchored to him, but she would not acknowledge him. It was a deliberate, painful separation that reinforced her sacrifice.

She is trying to protect me by dying alone, his wolf thought, pushing his legs harder across the snow-dusted ridges.

The trail was a chaotic mix of scents. Elara's scent-cedar and control-was faint and subdued by the suppressive magic. Alongside it was the heavy, nauseating stench of the Shadow Wolf, a blend of ozone, dark magic, and the metallic tang of old, cursed silver. Kael had smelled this before in a territory ruined by dark magic years ago. This enemy was ancient and ruthless.

The Shadow Wolf was barely ahead of Elara, confirming Kael's worst fear: the enemy was fast, driven, and closing in.

The First Obstacle

By late afternoon, the trails led Kael to a sheer cliff face overlooking the Black River gorge. This spot was known for being a dangerous crossing between the Pack territories and the wildlands.

Elara's human scent stopped abruptly at the cliff edge. He noticed subtle signs of her climb: a few tiny, nearly invisible scrapes on the polished rock and a single, discarded knot of climbing rope, cut cleanly. She had chosen to ascend the cliff face, deliberately slowing her pursuers.

The Shadow Wolf didn't bother with the climb. It continued down the river path.

Wait, Kael thought, cocking his massive head and twitching his ears. The Shadow Wolf should have taken the easier route to the prey.

He shifted back into his human form to examine the two paths. Why would the Shadow Wolf, who had undeniable speed, choose the longer way?

Kael scanned the cliff face. It was covered with shimmering, iridescent moss that the Shadow Wolf's trail had carefully avoided. He approached the moss cautiously, sniffing. The scent of ozone was strong here, too.

He realized the unsettling truth: the moss was not natural. It was magically charged, possibly poisoned with dark energy-a subtle trap.

The Shadow Wolf hadn't taken the easy way; it had sent a proxy or scout into the trap, planning for the scout to confront Elara while the main hunter took the safer route to save energy. Elara hadn't climbed to slow her pursuer; she had climbed to avoid a magical decoy.

Kael's anger flared. This enemy was clever, treating the chase like a strategic game.

He knew he had to take the cliff face. If he followed the river, the Shadow Wolf would gain too much ground. He picked up the cut rope Elara had left behind.

The Shaman's Message

The climb was brutal, pushing Kael's healing scar and straining his newly purified wolf core. Halfway up the granite face, he felt something soft in a crevice-a small, dry feather wrapped in a piece of silver birch bark.

He recognized the token immediately. It was a communication marker used by Mora, the Shaman-Elara's mentor.

Kael peeled open the bark. Inside, three symbols were scratched onto the smooth silver surface:

- A deeply carved Omega symbol (signifying Elara's vulnerability/sacrifice).

- A crude drawing of a Chained Hand (symbolizing her healing power being bound).

- A directional arrow pointing Northwest (indicating her route).

The final symbol was a single word, scratched deep enough to draw small splinters: "HURT."

Mora wasn't just giving him directions; she was warning him. She knew the Shadow Wolf was more than a hunter; it was a tormentor. Elara wasn't just running away; she was drawing painful confrontations to herself.

The chilling realization hit Kael: Mora was not trying to help Elara escape; she was helping Kael find Elara. The Shaman, aware of Kael's sacrifice in the initial rejection, was now using him as the last line of defense against the Shadow Wolf. She had trained Elara to fight and was now guiding her mate to save her.

Kael crushed the birch bark in his fist, his heart aching with urgency. The "Shadow Wolf" was not a single entity; it was a coordinated hunt, and Kael was now an unwilling player in Mora's complex scheme.

The Twist of the Knife

Reaching the summit, Kael shifted back into his wolf form and resumed the chase. The trails were clearer here, leading across an open plateau. The Shadow Wolf's scent was strong and distinct.

Then, Kael caught a third scent that stopped him in his tracks. It was the scent of a rival werewolf tracker-skilled, fast, and familiar.

It was Gamma Torvin.

Torvin, the Gamma of the Stonepeak Pack, had been sent to hire Elyra, and now he was on the trail. But Torvin's scent mixed with a faint amount of the Shadow Wolf's ozone odor-not enough to be infected, but enough to suggest collaboration.

Kael grasped the sickening truth: the "internal force" that knew Elara's ways was likely Gamma Torvin, who was working with the Shadow Wolf to capture the powerful Healer. Torvin had used the official summons not to save the Packs, but to lead the enemy to their target, securing the Alpha's doom and an alliance with the Shadow Wolf.

Kael's pursuit was no longer just a race against time and fate; it was against betrayal and capture. He was chasing his mate while being hunted by a conspiracy closing in on Elara from both sides.

Kael let out a fierce, warning howl that echoed across the plateau. Not as a challenge, but as a silent promise to the Shadow Wolf and the traitor Gamma: he was coming for his mate, and anyone in his way would fall.

He increased his speed, following the triple trail. The silence of the mate bond was the loudest warning of all.
