Chapter 6

Barbara's POV

Humiliation, I discovered, did not end when the doors closed. It followed you home through a thousand glowing screens.

My phone began vibrating before the car cleared the Wilson Grand’s driveway. I sat in the back seat with my hands locked together on my lap, watching the hotel disappear through the tinted window while notifications multiplied across the screen beside me. Messages. Missed calls. News alerts. Social media tags. Each vibration felt like another pair of eyes turning towards me inside the ballroom.

I had walked out with my head high.

My body had apparently missed the performance.

My fingers were still trembling. My knees felt weak beneath the black silk of my dress, and every breath stopped halfway down my chest as if something inside me had forgotten how to let the air through. The driver glanced at me in the mirror once before looking away. He had worked for my family long enough to understand that silence could be a form of loyalty.

The phone vibrated again.

I reached for it.

A video filled the screen before I could prepare myself. Someone had recorded the moment Max ordered the hotel manager to remove me. The clip began with her finger pointed towards my face and ended with the manager asking whether I wanted security to remove the disruptive guests.

The caption read:

SHE TRIED TO THROW THE OWNER OUT OF HER OWN HOTEL.

The video had already been viewed more than two hundred thousand times.

I stared at the number until it changed.

Two hundred and eight thousand.

Two hundred and fifteen thousand.

Two hundred and twenty-three thousand.

The comments moved even faster.

Barbara Wilson is the definition of silent wealth.

Max really thought every woman in a simple dress was poor.

The way Ms. Wilson said, “How dare you?” I felt that in my soul.

Anson fumbled a billionaire heiress for an influencer.

A laugh rose in my throat, sharp and humourless.

The internet had decided I was powerful now.

A few hours earlier, those same strangers would have believed Max when she called me a desperate employee. My ownership of the hotel had transformed the humiliation into entertainment. Wealth had made my pain respectable.

I scrolled farther.

The praise did not last.

Why would she hide being rich from her own husband? That is manipulation.

She set them up. She knew exactly what she was doing.

Rich people love humiliating ordinary people and calling it empowerment.

Anson probably thought she was broke because she wanted him to.

Imagine marrying someone who lies about their whole identity for five years.

My thumb stopped.

The words pressed against an old bruise.

I had never lied about being a Wilson. Anson knew my family had money. He knew I had grown up in San Francisco, attended Yale and had relatives who owned companies. He simply had never cared enough to ask how much belonged to me. Every conversation that did not lead back to his career bored him. Every part of my life that could not improve his image became background noise.

Still, I had allowed him to believe I was ordinary.

I had made my clothes simpler after he complained that people stared at me during his first contract meeting. I stopped mentioning my family connections when he accused me of making him feel like a charity case. I rejected an office at Wilson Group because he needed someone to travel with him. I let the distance between Barbara Wilson and Anson Miller’s quiet manager grow until even I could no longer tell where one woman ended and the other began.

The comments were cruel.

Cruelty did not always make them false.

Another clip appeared. This one began when I told Anson he still had not signed the papers. The camera shook as he reached for me, then steadied just in time to capture Henry catching his wrist.

Henry’s voice cut clearly through the ballroom noise.

“Take your hand away from her.”

The video slowed at that moment.

Someone had added dramatic music beneath it.

My stomach tightened.

Henry’s face was calm, but his eyes were colder than I remembered. His grip around Anson’s wrist looked effortless. Ethan appeared a second later on my other side, his expression stripped of the easy humour he had worn when he first approached me.

The caption called them my “billionaire bodyguards.”

I closed the video.

Neither man had been protecting a helpless woman. I had handled Max and Anson myself. Yet, some treacherous part of me remembered how Henry had moved before I could pull away, as though the idea of Anson touching me had crossed a line Henry had already drawn.

A message appeared at the top of the screen.

Henry Woods: Let me know when you arrive safely.

I read it twice.

The words were simple. No demand. No insistence that I should have accepted his offer to take me home. No question designed to force me into conversation.

I did not reply.

Ethan’s message arrived less than a minute later, although I had never given him my number.

Ethan Cole: Wilson Events has an excellent guest registration system. Before you accuse me of abusing it, your brother gave me permission. Are you okay?

Despite everything, my mouth almost curved.

Almost.

I locked the phone and placed it face down.

The screen lit again immediately.

This time, William’s name appeared.

“Where are you?” he asked as soon as I answered.

“Ten minutes from the estate.”

“Come straight to the west study.”

“I want to change first.”

“Max is livestreaming outside the hotel.”

My eyes closed.

“Of course she is.”

“She is crying.”

“Of course she is.”

“She says you used family influence to destroy a happy couple.”

The city lights moved across the car window in blurred lines. “They looked very happy while calling me a gold digger.”

“Barbara.”

“I heard you.”

William lowered his voice. “The lawyers are already at the house.”

“You called them before speaking to me?”

“I called them when Miller publicly announced a second wife while still married to my sister.”

“He hasn’t legally married Max.”

“He has publicly represented that he has.”

“He represents several things that aren’t true.”

“Which is exactly why we need to stop him.”

I looked down at my hands. The shaking had eased, but only slightly. “I’m coming home.”

Then I ended the call.

Max’s livestream was waiting when I looked at my phone again.

I should have ignored it.

Instead, I pressed play.

She stood outside the Wilson Grand beneath the bright hotel lights, wrapped in Anson’s jacket while mascara ran down her cheeks in carefully uneven lines. Cameras and phones surrounded her. Anson was nowhere in the frame, though his security team stood several feet behind her.

Max looked directly into the camera.

“I have never experienced anything so cruel in my life,” she said, her voice trembling. “We attended what we believed was an event supporting young athletes. Barbara used her family’s influence to embarrass us in front of sponsors and the press simply because Anson chose to move on.”

My teeth clenched.

Move on.

He had moved another woman into my bed before moving a pen across the divorce papers.

Max wiped beneath her eye without disturbing the rest of her makeup.

“I tried to be kind to her,” she continued. “I really did. I understood that she had worked for Anson for years and probably developed feelings that went beyond the professional relationship—”

A sound escaped me.

The driver glanced at the mirror again.

“Sorry,” I whispered.

He gave a small nod and returned his attention to the road.

On the screen, comments and heart emojis flew beside Max’s face.

“She never accepted that Anson was in love with me,” Max said. “Tonight was supposed to celebrate something positive, but she surrounded herself with powerful men and used hotel security to make us look dangerous. People need to understand that wealth does not give anyone the right to punish a happy couple for choosing each other.”

The happy couple.

The phrase spread through the comments almost immediately.

Max lowered her voice.

“I am honestly afraid of what she might do next.”

Then she began crying harder.

I stopped the livestream.

For several seconds, I heard nothing except the soft hum of the car and my own breathing.

She was afraid of me.

That was the story she had chosen.

Max had entered my bedroom, wrapped herself in my sheet, used my perfume and laughed while my husband asked me to postpone my heartbreak until after his game. She had taken credit for my work, fired me from a position she had not earned and called me pathetic in front of people I had spent years negotiating with.

Now she was afraid.

I wanted to release everything.

The marriage certificate.

Photographs from the wedding.

Emails I had sent on Anson’s behalf.

Contracts bearing my signature.

Hotel records showing Max had been in my home before the public announcement.

The divorce papers waiting unsigned.

I wanted to place every fact before the world and watch her tears become useless.

The desire frightened me.

Anger made truth feel like a weapon, and I had spent too many years turning myself into whatever Anson needed. I refused to become someone Max could create with a livestream.
