Chapter 6

The bells of Varelia rang for the first time in years, but this time it was to signal peace, not war.

The palace shone in the soft gold of sunset, and red and blue flags waved next to each other above the courtyard. People from both kingdoms, including nobles, soldiers, and regular people, came together and cheered, their voices echoing off the marble walls.

As her maid fastened the last clasp of her gown-a cascade of silken blue embroidered with threads of silver and firelight-Princess Elara of Varelia stood in front of her mirror and shook. She wore a light crown, but the weight of the day was heavy on her heart.

She saw herself in the mirror and made herself smile. She told herself that this was peace. I fought for this.

But it seemed like peace had a heartbeat, and it got faster every time she thought about the man waiting for her at the altar.

"Your Highness," her maid said softly. "The Prince is waiting."

Kael of Astren, the man she had promised to hate and who had gone against his reputation and all expectations, was about to become her husband.

The crowd stood up like a wave when she walked into the grand hall.

Kael was at the other end, and the sun shone on his dark hair and the silver crest on his royal suit. He didn't have his usual smirk anymore; instead, he looked deeper-reverent, awed, as if he still couldn't believe she had chosen him.

Elara's breath stopped.

Petals fell from the sky as she walked down the aisle. Every step felt like a promise: one kingdom, one future, and a love that was impossible to have because of competition.

Kael bowed low when she got to him, not out of politeness but out of respect. He whispered, "You look like something carved from dawn itself."

"And you," she said softly, "look like trouble in fine clothing."

A wave of laughter went through the guests who heard it.

As he raised his hands, the priest smiled. "Today, we bring together not just two people, but also two nations that have been at odds for a long time because of pride and blood. This union should be the light that leads us to peace.

They said their vows again. Hers were clear and strong, and his were softer and more emotional.

The hall erupted in cheers when the rings were put on and the last words were said.

But Kael didn't ask for permission. He leaned in, held her cheek, and kissed her slowly and with respect, but with all the pain they had been through to get to this point.

The crowd cheered.

That night, the celebration spilled into the courtyards. Lanterns floated into the sky, music filled the air, and laughter wove through the castle halls.

Elara slipped away to the balcony, needing a breath of quiet. The stars shimmered above the city - Astren's and Varelia's banners glowing side by side in the torchlight below.

She heard the soft click of boots behind her.

Kael leaned casually against the railing, his jacket undone, the faint scent of spice and smoke clinging to him. "Running away from your own wedding, Princess?"

"Just catching my breath," she said, not turning. "It's... a lot."

He stepped closer. "You wore blue today," he said. "Varelia's sky. Astren's sea. It suits you."

She smiled faintly. "You almost sound sincere."

"I am," he said, voice low. "I've been a fool most of my life. But when I look at you... I want to be better."

Her heart faltered. "You already are."

A pause. The night breeze toyed with her veil, brushing it against his arm.

He reached for her hand. "We've fought, we've bled, we've nearly lost everything. But tonight..." His thumb brushed her knuckles, sending a shiver through her. "Tonight, there's no war left between us."

Her eyes lifted to his. "Are you sure?"

He smiled - that familiar teasing curve she'd come to crave. "Let's make peace the only way we know how."

He drew her close, and their lips met again - slower this time, deeper, the world fading around them.

No court, no crowns, no titles - only the steady rhythm of two hearts finally in sync.

The fireworks burst above the palace in a cascade of gold and crimson. Below, the kingdoms rejoiced.

Above, on the balcony of fire and gold, the princess and the playboy prince sealed their love - not with duty, but desire.
