Chapter 3

– *Ghosts in the Code*

Sierra slid open the server vault in her SoHo loft, lined with binders, hard drives, and a coffee-stained corkboard spiderwebbed with notes.

“You’ve built a war bunker,” Lana muttered from the doorway.

“War requires strategy,” Sierra replied, inserting the decrypted WestTech drive. “And secrets.”

The screen lit up. Strings of code scrolled like rainfall.

“This is from the night of the crash?” Lana asked.

Sierra nodded. “Internal navigation data. Julian’s AI systems logged multiple access attempts. One override came from his credentials. But here—” she zoomed in, highlighting a time stamp, “—someone overrode *his* override.”

Lana leaned in. “So he tried to stop the crash?”

“Or reroute it.”

“And someone else let it happen?”

“No,” Sierra said slowly. “Someone tried to protect me.”

Lana crossed her arms. “Then why send you away? Why the silence? The exile?”

Sierra stared at the screen. “That’s the part that still burns.”

---

Julian sat alone in his private office atop Mercury Tower, staring at a paused video frame.

Sierra, standing near the gala staircase. Her eyes catching his across the crowd.

Even pixelated, they cracked him open.

He hit play. Rewind. Pause. Again.

“I know you,” he murmured.

He rubbed his temple as pain bloomed behind his eyes.

Images blurred together—shattered glass, her scream, his own bloody hands fumbling with a seatbelt.

He groaned, slamming the tablet shut.

---

At Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Lang flipped through Julian’s scan results.

“He’s pushing past limits again,” he said into his recorder. “Hippocampal scarring worsening. Arrhythmia episodes increasing.”

He stopped, then added quietly, “He’s not going to tell her.”

---

Back at the loft, Sierra moved to the kitchen as Lana clicked through footage from the old WestTech servers.

“This drive’s more than logs. It’s a map,” Lana said. “Look.”

Sierra walked back, wiping her hands on a towel.

Onscreen: an internal project folder labeled **PHOENIX\_BACKUP\_ROOT**.

Subfolder: **TRIAGE\_TRIALS\_CONFIDENTIAL**

A line of redacted names.

One stood out. *Trial Recipient: \[REDACTED]*

Sierra’s breath caught.

Julian’s initials had tagged several files as the author.

“Medical trials?” Lana whispered.

Sierra clicked open a diagnostic snapshot. Heart failure risk percentage: 72%. Gene therapy candidates: 1.

“Oh my God,” Sierra said.

Lana turned. “What?”

Sierra’s voice wavered. “He didn’t just send me away. He nearly died doing it.”

---

That evening, Sierra stepped into a rooftop bar, neon rain dancing on the windows. She ordered neat whiskey and slid into a corner booth.

She opened her phone again.

A hidden folder in the decrypted drive had surfaced after the last scan. It contained a message fragment, buried in the AI logs:

*If she returns, don’t let her near this.*

Sierra stared, ice melting untouched in her glass.

So why leave the trail?

Why not erase everything?

Unless…

She opened another folder. A single still image blinked onscreen: the crash, from a rear dashcam. A black sedan slamming into Julian’s vehicle.

She zoomed in.

License plate: untraceable shell company.

Owner: **Kane Industries Holding Group.**

Her hand clenched the glass so hard it cracked.

“Everett,” she whispered.

---

Julian’s security detail pinged his private line.

“We have a visitor downstairs.”

He scanned the feed—Sierra, arguing with front desk reception, credentials flashing.

He pressed his intercom. “Let her up.”

When she entered, he was seated behind a desk too clean, too curated.

“Helios’s finest,” he said. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“Cut it, Julian,” she snapped. “I know about Phoenix. The trials. The accident.”

He blinked.

“I found the logs,” she continued. “You were protecting me. You rewrote the AI to reroute the crash. You sent me away.”

Silence. His hands remained clasped, knuckles white.

“You knew someone was targeting you—us. And instead of explaining, you buried me in silence.”

“You wouldn’t have left,” he said quietly.

“You didn’t even ask.”

Julian stood, pacing. “There was no time. I had...months left. I needed you safe. Out of reach.”

“You were dying.”

“I *am* dying,” he said.

The words sat heavy between them.

“You should’ve trusted me,” she whispered.

“I did. That’s why I sent you away.”

She shook her head. “That wasn’t trust. That was control.”

He met her eyes. “You’re right.”

The silence that followed was more brutal than any shouting match.

“I’m not that girl anymore,” Sierra said finally. “I’m not here to beg for closure.”

Julian leaned against the glass wall. “Then why come?”

She hesitated. “Because if Everett Kane framed me—if he tried to kill *you*—I won’t let him win.”

Julian nodded. “You still wear armor, Sierra. But you came back to the fire.”

“I came back to burn it down.”

They stood facing each other, two halves of a broken code.

And somewhere in the city below, the first tremor of war shuddered to life.
