Chapter 3

I said, "Mom, he cheated."

A beat of silence on the other end.

"Cheated how? He didn't do anything with that woman. They just talked, grabbed a few meals together. He told me himself. Men are like that—it's normal to have someone to talk to outside the house. You're home all day nagging him about every little thing. He's under pressure. What's wrong with him finding someone to vent to?"

I held the phone, my fingers stiff.

"He told me nothing happened between them. The condoms were bought but never used. You didn't catch him in the act, so what right do you have to throw around accusations?"

I wanted to say: Never used because he hadn't gotten around to it yet.

But I didn't.

There was no point.

"Fine, fine. You want a divorce, get a divorce. Just don't come crying about it later. With that temper of yours, who'd even want you?"

The line went dead.

I stood there for a moment, tossed the phone into my bag, got in the car, and turned the ignition.

As I pulled out of the neighborhood, the window of their apartment shrank smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror.

I didn't cry.

Later, I realized his mother hadn't said that out of anger.

She genuinely believed no one would want me.

The day the divorce was finalized, I ran into Laurel outside the County Courthouse. She was arm-in-arm with her boyfriend, the two of them just coming out after getting their marriage license. Both of them were beaming.

When she spotted me, her smile faltered for a second. Then she rolled her eyes.

"Well, well. Sis—oh wait, ex-sis." She dragged the words out on purpose. "Today's a big day for both of us, huh? We both got our papers."

I ignored her and walked the other way.

Behind me, she clicked her tongue—not loud, not quiet, pitched just right so I'd hear every word. "Keep pushing people away. Push until you end up a divorcée. See who wants you then."

I stopped.

Turned around and looked at her.

She tensed up, shrinking behind her boyfriend.

I said nothing. Turned back around and got in my car.

I couldn't really blame her for talking like that. The whole Fox family talked like that.

The first year of my marriage, I'd gotten into an argument with Cole's mother over something trivial. Laurel had jumped in to back her up, telling me I was an outsider who didn't know her place.

Cole had been standing right there. He hadn't said a word.

Later I asked him: your sister called me an outsider. Why didn't you say something?

He said, "That's just how she is. Don't stoop to her level."

I said, "Then what am I?"

He looked at me, something tired in his eyes.

"You're my wife."

Back then, I believed him.

Looking back now, what he left unsaid was: You're my wife, but that's my mother. That's my sister.

You have to be the bigger person.

They don't.

A month after the divorce, I got a phone call.

Unknown number. I answered, and a woman's voice came through—soft, with a faint Southern lilt.

"Is this Hilary?"

I said it was.

She let out a little laugh.

"I'm Yolanda Perry. Cole's girlfriend."

My grip tightened around the phone.

"He'd like to see you. There are some things he wants to say in person. Could you come down for a minute? I'm outside your office building."

I walked to the window and looked down.

A woman stood at the entrance of the building, wearing a white dress, holding an umbrella.

Round face. Monolid eyes.

Exactly like the photos.

By the time I made it downstairs, she was still standing in the same spot.

When she saw me, she smiled, folded her umbrella, and walked over.

"Hi, Hilary." She tilted her head to one side. "Cole said he wanted to talk to you, so he sent me to come get you."

I looked at her.

"He doesn't have a mouth of his own?"

She blinked. Then she laughed out loud.

"You're a riot." She shook her head. "No wonder Cole said he couldn't make it work with you. Too intense."

I didn't move.

She took a step closer, leaning in, dropping her voice low.
