Chapter 5

The night before they left for the safe territory abroad, Salvatore’s voice softened a little, as if he was trying to explain himself.

“There were only five sets of papers cut for this trip,” he said. “Someone had to stay and mind the compound. That’s why you’re not coming. Don’t take it personally, okay? There’ll be other chances. We’ve got plenty of time.”

It sounded like reassurance, but the tone still carried that familiar condescension, like he was doing me a favor by explaining anything at all.

Just like that, he turned his back to me and closed his eyes, done with the conversation.

I stared at the back of his head, blank and still. But there was no ache in my chest anymore. No anger. No sadness. Nothing.

I was done waiting around for "next time."

Again, I didn’t sleep a wink that night.

By dawn, the whole compound was bustling. They were all in high spirits, energized by the thrill of crossing into another Family’s ground for the first time. I watched as they checked their bags and their traveling papers over and over again.

I had made breakfast early, quietly preparing their favorite things, hoping they’d at least take a bite.

But no one even looked at it.

Marco, my grandson, giggled as he teased me on his way out the door. “Grandma, we’re flying to foreign ground! Who’d still want your boring old sour bread? You’re so behind the times!” He rolled his eyes and sang the last words back at me in that mocking lilt of his.

I just looked at him and smiled. Didn’t say a word. There were too many bags for one pair of hands, so I drove everyone to the private airstrip.

As we pulled up, I saw Vittoria, perfect as always, polished from head to toe, the Family’s charmed ornament. The second they spotted her, every face lit up.

Marco ran straight into her arms. Salvatore’s smile was so wide it wrinkled his whole face. My son and his wife beamed, barely able to hide their excitement.

In that moment, it was like there were two different worlds. Them, and me.

“Dio, Aunt Vittoria, I missed you so much!” Marco shouted with glee.

Vittoria greeted everyone with that sweet, practiced smile she always wore. Her fingers rose to the pendant at her throat, and she tilted her head as she reminded the group in her usual meticulous way, “Double-check your papers, cara. I’m always paranoid about this kind of thing. Forget anything else, just don’t forget your traveling documents and your IDs.”

Despite having checked everything at the compound several times already, they all obediently unzipped their bags and rifled through them, because when Vittoria said a thing, it carried the weight of a made man’s word.

It should’ve all gone smoothly. Everything should have been perfect. But of course, the one thing that mattered the most went missing.

Little Marco’s papers were nowhere to be found.

The second the panic set in, their heads all turned toward me at once, as if they’d just remembered I existed.

“Ma, you packed Marco’s bag, didn’t you? You said you put it in. Why isn’t it there?”

I froze. I had packed it. With my own hands. I remembered every detail, every pocket.

Before I could explain, Salvatore came at me, face twisted in fury. The slap landed hard across my cheek, out there in the open, where the whole crew could see.

For a second, everything went silent, just a ringing in my ears. Even the men loading the last cases went still. The sting bloomed hot and sharp, over and over, burning straight into my thoughts.

Heads turned to stare. Strangers on the tarmac. Watching. Judging. A public dishonoring, and he didn’t care who saw it.

“I knew it,” Salvatore shouted. “You’ve been so damn obedient all week, and now I see why. This was your plan all along, wasn’t it? You wanted to sabotage the trip. You wanted to ruin everything.”

“No, I didn’t!” I managed to say.

Yet the words fell flat in the space between us, crushed beneath the weight of their accusations.

I could barely contain my outrage as I screamed out in frustration.

Vittoria was quick to rush over, her voice urgent. “This isn’t the time for a sit-down over blame. We need to figure out where it was left. If someone can go back for it, we can probably still make the departure.”

Just then, Carla came over, looking frustrated with herself. She let out a short, breathy laugh and glanced at Vittoria before she spoke. “It’s all my fault. I was going to bring the breakfast this morning, but my bag was too full, so I took it out. That’s probably when I pulled the papers out by mistake.”

I glared at Salvatore, but his face showed no trace of guilt.

“This is all your fault!” I snapped. “You insisted on bringing breakfast. If you hadn’t pretended to be so thoughtful, none of this would’ve happened.”

The anger surged through me and suddenly my mind went blank. I lost consciousness and collapsed hard to the ground. The pain shot up from my head.

No one came to help. They were already moving toward the plane, leaving me behind on the concrete.

A kind stranger, some civilian who owed no one anything, got me to a hospital, and by the time I came back to myself it was almost evening.

I opened my phone to find a message from Carla.

[Ma, we couldn't find you at the airstrip. We’ve got the papers and we’re about to board. Don’t be mad at Sal, he was just in a hurry. I know this is my fault and I’m sorry you had to go through that. When we get back, I’ll bring you a gift. Take care of yourself.]

Tears slid down my face. Thirty years of sacrifice, thirty years of washing their money and keeping their crew fed, and this was the result.

I couldn’t keep living like this.

I made my way home in the dark, and for the first time in days, I slept soundly. My heart had finally died; there would be no more expectations. Once I let go, everything seemed less unbearable.

The next morning, I took out all the cash I had put away over the years, the washed money no one ever thanked me for, along with the sole title to the compound. My name was the only one on it.

For all these years I had worked without rest, running the front, cleaning every dollar that kept Salvatore’s crew standing, while he lost himself completely in the swagger of being a man of respect.

This estate, I had bought outright, with no help from anyone.

I drove to the lawyer’s back room, no hesitation, just one simple request.

"Sell it as soon as possible."

I agreed to a three percent discount, and the lawyer happily set the title moving.

Then I booked myself passage for three days out. My destination was the Elontrian territories, well off the Family’s map, protected by no one but free of everyone. Yeah, it was going to be my first stop on a journey clear around the world.

I decided my life needed a fresh start, and it was going to begin right here. I smoothed the hem of my apron flat with both palms, the way I always had. Then my hands went still, and fell away, and I did not touch it again.
