Chapter 2

What I wanted, freedom, a little joy. Yet, to my Family, my wish was nothing more than a selfish indulgence, the kind a made man's wife had no business craving.

I squinted, the pain in my chest twisting tighter with every breath.

"She's got it stuck in her head," Salvatore said, shaking his head as he lifted the accordion back onto his knee, the instrument my money had bought him. "She's been jealous of her sister for years. But a person learns to accept the place they're given. What's not meant for you, you don't reach for. Better to let it go than sit chained to it forever."

The music resumed, drifting through the compound, but I knew those words weren't spoken into empty air. He'd made certain every syllable reached me, the way a man delivers a warning without ever raising his voice.

I shut my eyes in despair, trying to understand what it meant to "accept your fate."

The bell at the gate rang.

A second later, Salvatore's voice lit up with delight. "Vittoria! Why didn't you send word ahead?"

Then Vittoria's cheery voice floated in like sunshine through a barred window. "Thought I'd surprise you! Life needs a little unexpected joy, doesn't it?"

Marco's shriek of excitement nearly pierced my ears. "Aunt Vittoria! You're finally here!"

The whole house came alive. Salvatore was practically dancing, washing fruit, uncorking something old and expensive he'd been saving, his face flushed from smiling too hard.

Then Vittoria asked, with that familiar warmth in her voice, "Where's my sister? Isn't she going to come pay her respects?"

Salvatore's expression froze. Just for a second. Then he let out a cold laugh. "She's sulking. Says she wants to vanish off somewhere, see other territories. Honestly, the older she gets, the more like a child she becomes."

Vittoria chuckled softly, her fingers rising to the pendant at her throat, lingering there as she tilted her head. "You've built such a happy, beautiful Family here, Salvatore. Honestly, I'm a little envious. And she doesn't even see the gift of it? Wants to run off and do who knows what?"

Then she turned to him, almost sweetly, her fingers still resting on the chain. "But don't be too hard on Antonietta. She's always been a little turned inward, even when we were girls. I understand her. I'm only sorry the rest of you have to carry it."

The moment my name crossed her lips, the air in the room shifted, the way it does in a room full of men when the wrong subject is raised. Every face soured at once.

Noticing the tension, my son moved fast to smooth it over. "Let's not talk about that. It's a good day, Aunt Vittoria's here. Why don't we all go out tonight? Sit down somewhere proper, celebrate."

Salvatore nodded eagerly. "Of course. We've got a genuine artist under our roof. We treat her like she's owed the whole city."

Marco clapped his hands, nearly bouncing. "Yes! A real dinner! Aunt Vittoria's the best, I love it when she comes!"

The house filled with noise again, laughter, talk, the shuffle of people readying themselves to go.

Then the heavy front door swung shut. And silence took over.

I slowly stood, walked out of the bedroom, and stared at the empty front room. They'd all gone to sit down together. Not one of them had thought to call my name.

I lowered myself onto the couch. The dark screen of the television threw my reflection back at me, overweight, plain, hair a tangled mess.

They weren't wrong. Set beside my sister Vittoria, I was nothing.

She had never bound herself to any man, never taken the vows that chained a woman to a crew. She moved through territories as she pleased, charmed bosses across every border, came and went protected by no one and owing no one. She chased the horizon while I stayed inside these walls, married Salvatore, gave up everything for this Family, raised a son, looked after a grandson. And now? I played the part of the help, the woman who kept the front business running and was expected to smile while she did it.

I looked at the Family portrait hanging over the mantel, five faces beaming, the very picture of belonging.

But I wasn't in it.

I remembered why. I'd broken my leg that week, laid up while the doctor the Family kept on retainer set the bone. Salvatore had taken Vittoria and the rest of them to have the photo made without me.

When I asked him about it, he didn't even flinch.

"Antonietta, Vittoria's got no one. She's been low. I only wanted to give her a sense of belonging. And she's your sister. I look after her for your sake."

He'd hung the photo dead center over the mantel. Couldn't stop admiring it. When he caught my face darkening, his tone changed in an instant.

"She's your own blood. Are you really that jealous? You've always been like this, envious of her since you were girls. Grow up, Antonietta. We're Family. Family looks after its own."

I stared at that photo, at the smiling faces I once believed included me.

I wondered when exactly I had disappeared from my own life.
