Chapter 3

Two in the morning felt like the perfect time for answers I wasn't sure I wanted.

I'd spent the hours since dinner pacing my room like a caged animal, Sterling's words echoing in my head. The third floor wasn't open to guests. Structural issues. Insurance liability. Each lie had tasted more bitter than the last, especially when I knew someone was up there, waiting behind those boarded windows.

The hallway outside my room was tomb-quiet as I slipped out, bare feet silent on the worn carpet. Every creak of the old floorboards sounded like gunshots in the stillness. I made my way to the staircase I'd spotted earlier—a narrow servants' stair tucked behind a door marked "Private."

My hand trembled as I turned the brass handle, expecting resistance, expecting alarms, expecting Sterling to materialize from the shadows and drag me back to my room. Instead, the door opened with barely a whisper.

The staircase was steep and narrow, designed for people who were meant to remain invisible. I climbed in darkness, one hand trailing along the rough wall for balance, the other clutching my phone's dim flashlight. Each step took me further from the renovated elegance below and closer to whatever truth waited above.

The door at the top should have been locked. Should have been barred, sealed, impossible to breach. Instead, it stood before me like any other door—except for the small rectangular panel embedded in the handle where a keyhole should have been.

A biometric scanner. Here, in a supposedly abandoned floor of a supposedly historic manor.

My thumb hovered over the dark surface, logic screaming that this was insane. I was nobody. I had no business here. There was no reason my fingerprint would be in any system, especially not one protecting whatever secrets Sterling was hiding.

But I pressed down anyway.

The scanner flashed green. A soft click echoed in the stairwell.

The door swung open.

My legs nearly gave out. Someone had programmed my fingerprint into this system. Someone had been expecting me—not just today, not just this week, but long enough ago to install biometric security and input my biological data. The implications crashed over me like ice water.

I stepped through the doorway and immediately understood why Sterling had lied.

This wasn't a renovated club floor. This was a time capsule.

The hallway stretched before me in perfect preservation—faded floral wallpaper, burgundy carpet worn thin by decades of footsteps, brass sconces that belonged in a museum. The air was thick with dust and something else, something that made my chest tighten with recognition.

Lily of the valley and amber. My mother's perfume.

Impossible. She'd been dead for twenty years. But the scent hung in the air like a ghost, so vivid I could almost see her walking these halls in her cream-colored dress, her dark hair catching the light from those antique fixtures.

I moved down the hallway on unsteady legs, past closed doors marked with brass numbers: 301, 302, 303. Each one felt like a held breath, like secrets waiting to spill into the silence. But it was 308 that drew me forward, the number the woman in the garden had scratched into the earth.

The door stood slightly ajar.

Light leaked through the gap—not the warm glow of antique fixtures, but the harsh blue-white of modern electronics. I pushed the door open with one finger, my heart hammering against my ribs.

The room beyond was a study, but not the kind you'd find in any normal house. This was a war room.

Maps covered every inch of the walls—aerial photographs of Ashwick, property surveys, topographical charts marked with red ink that looked disturbingly like blood. Strings connected photographs to documents to newspaper clippings in a web of investigation that made my head spin. But it was the center of the display that stole my breath.

My mother's face stared back at me from a dozen different angles. Professional headshots, candid photographs, even what looked like surveillance images taken with a long-range lens. Below them, in careful handwriting, someone had noted dates, times, locations. The last entry was September 22nd, 2003—the day she died.

A laptop sat open on the desk, its screen dark but power light glowing. File folders were stacked beside it in neat piles, each labeled with dates that made my stomach clench. I grabbed the nearest one with shaking hands.

The papers inside were legal documents—contracts, property deeds, transfer agreements. But one document made my vision blur at the edges. A property transfer agreement dated three days before my mother's death. The header read "Blackthorn Manor and Associated Holdings" in official legal typeface.

The agreement would transfer ownership of the manor and six hundred acres of surrounding land to something called the Ashwick Heritage Trust. The seller's signature line was blank, but the witness signatures at the bottom made my blood turn to ice.

Gerald Thorne—the name meant nothing to me, but the title beneath it did. "Mayor of Ashwick, 1995-2010."

And below that, in careful script: "Sterling Voss Sr."

Sterling's father. Sterling's father had been involved in whatever had happened to my mother twenty years ago. The photograph, the key, the invitation—none of this was coincidence. This was a trap that had been twenty years in the making.

I fumbled for my phone, hands shaking as I tried to photograph the document. The flash seemed impossibly bright in the dim room, and I immediately killed the light, my heart pounding as I listened for any sound from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Not one set, but two. Measured, deliberate, moving down the hallway toward room 308.

I shoved the document back into its folder and dove behind the large bookshelf in the corner, squeezing myself into the narrow space between the shelf and the wall. Through the gaps between books, I had a clear view of the doorway.

The footsteps stopped just outside.

"She came up tonight, didn't she?" The voice was female, crisp and professional. The woman from the garden.

"Fingerprint scanner logged her access three minutes ago." Sterling's voice was calm, almost amused. "Right on schedule."

They both turned to look directly at the door to room 308.

My blood froze. They knew exactly where I was. They'd known I would come here, known I would find this room, known I would discover whatever truth they'd been hiding for twenty years.

And they'd been watching me every step of the way.
