Chapter 3

"Keep tracking the access logs," I told Priya, whipping the steering wheel hard to the left.

The sedan's tires screeched against the asphalt as I pulled an illegal U-turn right in the middle of the intersection. The blaring horn of the car behind me faded as I hit the gas, speeding straight back toward the Calloway corporate tower.

"Lena? What are you doing?" Priya's voice crackled through the speaker.

"Going to the lab," I replied. "I want to see exactly what she touched."

"Margaret left the building ten minutes ago," Priya warned.

"Margaret is arrogant, not thorough," I said, pressing the accelerator closer to the floorboard. "She wouldn't risk carrying stolen biological material in her designer handbag."

"You think she left it there?"

"I know she did."

Twenty minutes later, I swiped my keycard at the sub-basement security door. The heavy metal panel unlatched with a hollow thud. I pushed it open and stepped into the chilled air of the storage wing.

The sterile room usually smelled of ozone and bleach. Today, it carried a heavy, cloying note of synthetic jasmine and crushed roses.

Margaret's signature perfume. The scent hung thickest right in front of the primary refrigeration unit.

I snapped a pair of blue nitrile gloves over my wrists and pulled open the heavy glass door of the freezer. Cold air billowed out, frosting the sleeves of my dark blouse.

"I'm at the cold storage," I announced, wedging my phone between my shoulder and ear.

"Give me the row number," Priya said, the rapid clacking of her keyboard echoing over the line.

"Row four. Section B." I scanned the metal racks. "Patient ID ending in a seven."

I lifted the small glass vial from its circular slot and held it up to the harsh fluorescent ceiling light.

"I have the tube," I told her.

"Does it look tampered with?" Priya asked.

I ran my gloved thumb over the adhesive strip. The edge of the tamper-evident seal curled slightly upward, leaving a microscopic residue of older glue beneath it.

"The seal was peeled back and reapplied," I noted. "And the printed label is wrong."

"Wrong how?"

"The font," I said, squinting at the black digits. "It's half a point thicker than the standard lab system printer. Someone printed this on a commercial inkjet and slapped it over the original."

"Hold on," Priya muttered. "I just pulled the master registry from the hospital's central server. I'm cross-referencing the barcode."

The typing stopped.

"Lena," Priya said, her tone dropping. "Your original sample was routed to the incinerator yesterday afternoon."

"Then whose blood am I holding?" I asked.

"A fifty-two-year-old woman in the adjacent ward," Priya answered. "Stage four, metastatic. Margaret swapped your terminal diagnosis for someone with months left to live."

My grip tightened around the vial. The cold glass bit into my palm through the nitrile.

"She didn't just want me dead," I said. "She wanted the paperwork to prove it before I ever knew."

"Lena, get out of there," Priya urged. "If she catches you holding the evidence, it's your word against the registry."

I slid the vial into the inner pocket of my coat and pressed it flat against my chest.

"No," I said quietly. "It's the registry against the truth. And I am the one who built that registry."

I peeled off the gloves and turned to pull the freezer door shut.

Behind me, the hollow thud of the security panel unlatched a second time.
