Chapter 4

His head whipped to the side, a thunderous silence engulfing the room.

The only thing louder than the sound of my hand striking his face was the storm that had finally broken inside me.

Dominic drew in a harsh breath, his jaw tightening as he slowly turned back to face me. His eyes, once familiar, were now shadowed and unreadable.

“What the hell is your problem?” he growled, voice low and biting.

A bitter, humorless laugh tore from my throat, bubbling up through the burn in my chest. “My problem?” I repeated, my voice cold. “You’re seriously asking me that? After what you’ve done? After you let our daughter die?”

His face twisted, equal parts fury and frustration. “That’s not what happened,” he snapped. “Don’t put that on me, Evelyne.”

“Oh, I will,” I said through clenched teeth, stepping closer until our faces were nearly touching. “You were given a choice. My child—our child—could’ve lived. But you handed her death sentence over yourself. You picked Julienne’s son.”

His hands dragged down his face, his voice defensive. “You act like it was black and white—like it was easy.”

“It was,” I said flatly, cutting him off before he could try to explain. “It was exactly that. One donor. One kidney. One child to save. And you didn’t pick Amara.”

Julienne shifted beside him uncomfortably, clutching her son tighter against her chest, her eyes darting between us. “Evelyne, please. Let’s not—”

My head snapped toward her, rage flooding every nerve in my body. “Don’t. Don’t you dare say my name. We’re not family anymore.”

Tears pooled in her eyes. “I never wanted things to happen this way.”

“You never want anything, do you?” I spat, my voice like poison. “You didn’t want to sleep with the man I loved. You didn’t mean to take everything that belonged to me. But you did it anyway.”

Julienne opened her mouth, her lips parting to respond, but I didn’t give her the chance.

“You should’ve been the one who didn’t make it out of that warehouse,” I whispered coldly.

She recoiled as if I’d slapped her, her arms tightening around her child.

Dominic immediately stepped between us. “That’s enough,” he said sternly, his voice harsh.

I let out a hollow chuckle. “Of course. Of course you’d protect her. That’s what you’ve always done, right? The loyal protector. Always hers.”

His fists clenched at his sides, tension pulsing through him. “I was trying to do the right thing. I was trying to save a child.”

“And I wasn’t?” I screamed, the words tearing out of me like broken glass. “I was trying to save my child. My baby, Dominic! And you stood there… and you let her die.”

The silence that followed stretched long and heavy, thick with all the things that could never be taken back.

Then, the fragile cry of a baby broke the air.

Julienne’s son.

Dominic moved instantly, not even sparing me a glance. He walked right past me, straight to the crib. As if I was invisible. As if I didn’t exist anymore.

He picked the baby up, his voice soft as he murmured to him, gently rocking him the way he once did for Amara.

My chest collapsed inward.

For a brief moment, it was as if nothing had changed—as if Amara were still alive, still curled in his arms. But it wasn’t her.

It would never be her again.

She was gone.

And this boy—their son—was what I had lost her for.

Something inside me fractured.

“I want a divorce,” I said, my voice empty.

Dominic didn’t flinch. Didn’t blink. He just kept holding the baby, whispering softly to him as if I hadn’t spoken at all.

“Did you hear me?” I asked, louder now, fists trembling.

Still nothing.

That silence told me everything.

I swallowed the lump forming in my throat, forcing myself to remain steady as the tears threatened. But I wouldn’t cry for him anymore. I had shed enough tears for a lifetime. For him. For Amara.

Without another word, I spun around and stormed from the room.

Later that night, the house was quiet. Everyone had gone to bed. The echoes of earlier screaming had faded into a stillness that settled heavy in the air.

But I felt nothing.

No grief. No pain.

Just a blistering truth, lodged in my bones.

They had taken everything from me.

I had packed a bag. I had planned to leave. To disappear.

But that wasn’t enough anymore.

Not now.

They didn’t deserve peace.

And I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of watching me walk away.

I moved through the dark hallway with practiced silence. When I reached Julienne’s door, I saw the dim light glowing under it. The door was slightly open.

I pushed it gently.

Julienne was sitting on her bed, her fingers rubbing her eyes. When she looked up and saw me, confusion washed over her face.

“Evelyne?” she asked, her voice heavy with sleep.

I said nothing.

I stepped inside, closing the door behind me with quiet finality.

Julienne sat up straighter, sensing something off. “What are you doing?”

I didn’t answer.

My hand slipped into my pocket, fingers wrapping around the cool metal object I had taken earlier from Dominic’s study—a scalpel.

Julienne’s breath caught. Her eyes widened.

She jumped to her feet, backing away. “Evelyne… what are you doing?”

I took a slow step forward, my voice calm. “Do you know what I uncovered today?”

She shook her head, inching toward the nightstand.

I moved faster. With one hand, I grabbed her wrist, and with the other, I yanked her shirt up just enough to expose her lower abdomen.

There it was.

A faint line. A scar.

The final piece of the truth.

Her gasp told me she knew I knew.

She shoved at me, trying to escape, but I slammed her back against the dresser, pinning her arms.

“Stop!” she shouted, tears spilling.

I raised the scalpel, pressing its tip to the skin just beneath that scar.

Her chest rose and fell rapidly, panic bleeding into every breath.

“I know everything now,” I whispered.

Her eyes searched mine desperately.

“You’re walking around with something that belongs to me,” I said coldly. “That kidney… it was mine. You’ve had a part of me inside you this whole time.”

Julienne sobbed. “Please… I didn’t know. Dominic—he—”

But I wasn’t listening anymore.

I pressed the blade closer, letting the sharp point rest on her skin.

“I’m taking it back,” I whispered.

And this time… I meant it.
