Chapter 5

Marcus's phone call vibrated against the mahogany desk like a trapped insect. Ryker's fingers pressed against both sides of the device, his storm-gray eyes fixed on mine across the polished surface.

"You decide," he said.

Those were the shortest authorization words I'd ever heard. I stared at the incoming call display—Marcus's name glowing above a photo we'd taken last summer at Barton Springs. He was laughing in the picture, and so was I. That was 2023, right after I'd transferred him his eleventh payment, when we'd gone swimming to celebrate his partnership offer. In that photo, my smile had been genuine.

I reached out, answered the call, and put it on speaker. The phone sat between us on the desk like a loaded weapon.

"Marcus," I said, my voice the steadiest version I could manage.

He paused for half a second—he hadn't expected my voice. Then he quickly adjusted: "Sloane? You're with Ryker?"

His voice cracked just slightly on that question. Not much, but enough for a trained ear to catch. The kind of crack that meant he was recalibrating faster than he'd planned.

"I'm in David's office," I said. Truth. "My lawyer scheduled a meeting. Marcus, I want to talk about that contract."

Three seconds of silence. Then he laughed—that laugh I'd once found charming, which now sounded like a performance I'd unknowingly rehearsed with him countless times.

"Baby, that contract isn't—we never took it seriously, right? That was David being overly cautious. I remember you thought so too at the time—"

"I remember signing it," I said. "I remember you signing it too."

This silence lasted longer. I looked at Ryker, who stood by the window with his back to me, gazing down at the street below. He was completely still, like a precision instrument someone had forgotten in the room. My Alo jacket hung over the chair behind me, and I suddenly wished I wasn't wearing this meticulously chosen Toteme suit for this meeting. I needed to feel harder, colder, more like my grandmother—the woman who'd built the original framework of the Voss fund, who never let anyone owe her favors.

"Sloane, listen to me carefully." Marcus's voice dropped to that tone he used when he thought he was being protective. "That money was always meant to be fluid between us. You know that. We talked about building something together—"

"We talked about you paying me back."

"With interest, yes, but not like this. Not through lawyers and formal demands. This isn't us."

I watched Ryker's reflection in the window glass. His jaw was set in a way that made the small scar more visible, and his hands were clasped behind his back with military precision.

"What is us, Marcus?" I asked.

Another pause. When he spoke again, his voice carried a different quality—something sharper underneath the familiar warmth.

"Us is three years of building a life together. Us is trust. Us is not letting other people manipulate you into thinking I'm some kind of criminal."

"Other people?"

"Sloane, you're in a room with someone who has every reason to want to see me destroyed. Someone whose family has been looking for any excuse to—"

"To what?"

"To finish what they started when they forced me to work with James Liu in the first place."

The words hit like ice water. I looked at David, whose face had gone carefully neutral behind his desk. Then at Ryker, whose reflection in the window had gone completely rigid.

"What are you talking about?" I asked.

"Ask your stepbrother about the real reason James Liu needed clean money to restart his business. Ask him about the internal vote that forced James to find alternative funding sources. Ask him who benefited when James's previous ventures got shut down."

My mouth felt dry. "Marcus—"

"The Voss family needed James Liu gone, but they also needed him functional enough to be a useful scapegoat later. So they created the conditions that forced him to partner with me. Your money wasn't funding James's comeback, Sloane. It was funding the Voss family's long-term strategy to control him."

I felt the room tilt sideways. Ryker turned from the window, his face a mask I couldn't read.

"That's not—" I started.

"Check the dates," Marcus said. "Check when Ryker first contacted David about James Liu's business activities. Check when your family's private equity fund first started acquiring companies in James's sector. Then check when I first asked you for money."

The silence in the room was suffocating. David's fingers drummed once against his desk pad, then stopped.

"Marcus," I said, my voice steadier than I felt, "I'm giving you seventy-two hours. Transfer $3.6 million to my account, or we go through legal proceedings."

His voice dropped lower—not gentle, but something else entirely. "Sloane, you don't know what you're doing. You don't know who you're in a room with."

My eyes moved to Ryker's silhouette against the morning light. "Tell me. Who?"

Marcus hung up.

Silence settled over the office like dust after an explosion. The phone's screen went dark, reflecting nothing but the overhead lights.

Then Ryker turned from the window, and for the first time, something in his expression had shifted—not softened, but something decisive had crystallized there.

"Tonight," he said, his voice lower than it had been all morning, "come with me somewhere. I need to show you something."

He walked toward me, stopping directly in front of my chair. The distance between us was exactly eighteen inches—close enough that I could smell his Tom Ford cologne mixed with something sharper, something that felt like controlled fury.

He didn't touch me, but his hand settled on the armrest of my chair, half an inch from my wrist. The space between his fingers and my skin felt charged, electric.

"Do you still think this is just about money?" he asked.

I looked up at him, at those storm-gray eyes that had always seen too much, and realized that everything I thought I knew about the last three years was about to change.
