Chapter 7

I barely slept that night. The room was quiet, yet the silence felt heavy, almost suffocating, like the walls themselves were watching me. Every sound - a floorboard creaking, the soft flutter of drapes, a distant laugh from the staff - made my heart lurch. I had tried to convince myself I was safe in this enormous mansion, that Dante Moretti wasn't looking over me every second... but the truth was undeniable. His presence lingered even when he wasn't there, a weight pressing down on me, reminding me that I was no longer free.

Morning came, though I barely noticed. Light filtered faintly through the heavy drapes, turning the gold accents of the room into a soft, unreal glow. I had hoped, foolishly, that the day might bring answers - maybe even a sense of relief - but as I stepped to the door, my optimism crumbled.

Dante was waiting.

He didn't speak immediately. He simply stood there, tall and imposing, his black suit tailored so perfectly it seemed as though it was part of him. Dark hair fell over his forehead, casting shadows across a face that was both impossibly beautiful and terrifyingly dangerous. My stomach twisted, the old mix of fear and adrenaline thrumming through me. Every muscle, every measured movement, screamed control and dominance.

Finally, his voice broke the silence, low and measured, filling the space between us. "You will stay in this mansion. You will follow the rules. Disobedience is not tolerated."

I swallowed hard, struggling to steady my trembling voice. "What rules?"

Dante's eyes darkened, intensity sharpening until it felt like they were piercing through my chest. "Do not try to leave. Do not speak without permission in certain areas. Do not interfere. Do not test boundaries. Understand?"

I nodded, though my heart was pounding with both defiance and fear. Understand? How could I understand a world I had only just been thrown into? How could I grasp the danger, the power, the absolute control of a man like Dante Moretti?

He stepped closer. The air around him shifted, heavy with tension. I could feel it, like electricity humming across the space between us. "This is not a game," he said. "You are here for a reason. You will comply, or there will be consequences."

The word consequences sank into my bones, icy and sharp. My eyes flicked around the room. Guards in black suits patrolled the edges silently, their presence both invisible and omnipresent. Cameras glinted subtly from corners, watching. The scale of Dante's empire pressed into the very walls - every room, every hallway, every window a reminder that there was no escape. Not tonight. Not tomorrow. Not ever.

Despite my fear, despite my trembling, I forced the question that had been burning in my mind since the auction. "Why... why did you buy me?"

For the first time, Dante paused. His gaze held mine, unblinking and intense, and I felt exposed under the weight of it, like he could see the deepest corners of my soul. "You remind me of someone," he said finally, voice quiet but laden with a weight that pressed on my chest. "Someone I lost. Someone I... remember."

My chest tightened, my stomach twisting with a mix of curiosity and dread. Who? Someone from his past? Who could I possibly remind him of?

Before I could ask, a shadow moved in the hallway. Another man, tall and sharp-featured - Luca, I assumed, one of Dante's trusted men - glanced at us. There was a flicker in his eyes, almost imperceptible, a look of surprise or shock. I wondered briefly what he had seen, what he knew that I didn't.

Dante didn't explain. He simply motioned for me to follow and led me down a long, polished corridor. My mind raced with questions I didn't dare voice. Who was I now, really? A pawn? A hostage? Or something else entirely in this empire of wealth and danger?

As we walked, I took in the mansion with new eyes. The walls were adorned with priceless art and photographs I couldn't recognize, yet the luxury was tempered with danger. Every corner was guarded, every hallway had surveillance, and the floors themselves seemed to echo with the discipline of a man used to absolute control. I realized, with a sinking feeling, that Dante Moretti wasn't just dangerous in wealth or influence. He was dangerous in presence. In control. In the way he could make someone feel simultaneously terrified and compelled to obey.

We entered a room that was smaller, more private, yet still elegant beyond reason. A desk of dark wood, bookshelves lined with leather-bound volumes, and a single chair by the window - that was all. He stopped in the center of the room and turned to me.

"You need to understand," he said. "Rules are not suggestions here. They are boundaries. Every move you make is observed. Every choice has weight."

I nodded, swallowing my fear. "And if I... break them?" My voice was barely a whisper.

Dante's gaze darkened further, a shadow crossing his face. "Then there will be consequences. And I promise... you will not like them."

I wanted to speak, to ask more, to understand why I was chosen, why I was here. But I didn't. Words felt fragile, powerless in the face of him. Instead, I watched his every motion, trying to memorize the way he carried himself, the subtle power in the curl of his lips, the dark intensity in his eyes.

There was a part of me - a reckless, foolish part - that was drawn to him. Something about his control, his strength, his absolute command of every situation, made my pulse quicken. And yet, another part of me - the part that screamed for freedom, that wanted to run, that wanted to escape - recoiled in fear.

I felt trapped between two worlds: the dangerous, magnetic pull of Dante Moretti, and the life I had lost, the freedom I had never really had but desperately craved.

Finally, he spoke again, softer this time. "You will obey, Elena. You will survive. And maybe... in time, you will understand why you are here."

I swallowed hard, my throat dry, my heart pounding in a mix of fear and anticipation. "Understand...?"

He simply nodded, turning toward the door, motioning for me to follow. The hallways stretched ahead, silent and foreboding, the mansion alive with unseen power and hidden threats. I realized then, as I followed Dante through the corridors, that I wasn't just in danger. I was already caught - caught in his world, caught in his control, caught in a web I didn't understand.

And the most terrifying thought of all: I didn't know if I wanted to escape.

Cliffhanger:

I wanted answers, but Dante gave none.

The rules were clear, the danger real...

And I realized with a jolt that every step I took in this mansion, every breath I drew, every heartbeat... was under his watch.

And if I broke the rules... I didn't know if I will survive.
