The Mafia Lord's Big Mistake
Chapter 7
I glanced at Damon as he took my hand in his and intertwined our fingers.
A smile touched his lips as he said, “You're special to me, Katie. Even though I've been distant these past few days, I still want to be with you. I'll never let anything or anyone separate us.”
I nodded and he added, "I can't wait for our baby to be born. How far long are you now?”
My heart clenched in pain at the thought of our baby. I tried to tell him that I lost the baby, but my breathing turned shallow.
Suddenly, I found it hard to breathe as I hyperventilated.
Damon looked worried as he sat up and hugged me.
He rubbed my back as he murmured, “Breathe, Katie, breathe."
I concentrated on my breathing and started breathing slowly.
Soon, my breathing evened out and he pulled away.
“Was it something that I said? Forgive me, I'll make sure not to say it again." He murmured as he stared at me with wide eyes.
I nodded as I tried not to think of my miscarriage.
He still looked worried as he added, “Let me make it up to you.”
“Alright.” I replied as I drew in a deep breath and let it out.
“To make you feel better, I'll take you wherever you want to go. Where do you want to go?” He asked as he brushed my hair out of my face and tucked it behind my ear.
I flinched at his touch and a hurt look made its way to his face.
“You're not going to the warehouse today?” I asked him as my eyes widened in surprise.
“I'm not going, I would rather be with you.” He murmured as he smiled at me.
“So where do you want to go?” He asked me again.
I cleared my throat and murmured, “You said that we'll go to the amusement park another day so that you’ll make it up to me for leaving me on our wedding anniversary.”
I wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary the right way before I left him. Our wedding anniversary has always been a special day to me and I wanted the last one that we celebrated to be the best, so that I would know that I didn't waste the twelve years that I've been married to Damon.
He nodded, “Of course, I'll make it up to you.”
He stood up as he added, “Come on, let's get ready.”
After we got ready, we went to the amusement park.
As we entered through the gates, Damon's phone beeped, signaling a text message.
He pulled it out of his pants pocket and glanced at the screen.
He looked happy as a smile graced his lips then he glanced at me and his smile disappeared as he looked frustrated.
He cleared his throat nervously as he muttered, “There's this problem with the drug dealer and I need to go to the ware-”
“Warehouse.” I continued his speech as I was all too familiar with it.
Thinking that I might be angry, he pleaded with me, “Please don't be angry, it's just so important and Mafia business can't -”
“Wait.” I continued his speech again with a blank look on my face.
“I'm not angry. I just didn't expect this to happen even though it always happens.” I said with a sigh.
He looked anxious as he replied, “I promise that I'll make it up to you someday.”
“Can't you just ignore it and spend the day with me?” I asked, feeling sadness fill me.
He let out a sigh, “It's too important for me to ignore.”
“More important than me?” I asked as I stared at him, expecting the right answer.
He didn't answer me, instead he turned around and started walking out of the amusement park.
Was he really going to the warehouse or was he going to Bonnie?
So Bonnie was more important to him than me.
Tears filled my eyes, but I blinked them back. I wouldn't let them break me.
I rode the rides in the amusement park alone as I wanted to forget Damon's betrayal and have fun.
I was on the swinging ride when I realized that I didn't need Damon. He was just bringing me down.
All I needed was myself. I was going to survive and I would become successful without Damon.
I stretched my hands out and breathed in the cool air as the ride swung around.
I felt free as I realized that a man doesn't define who I am.
