Chapter 5

"What were you drawing on that napkin?"

My fork froze halfway to my mouth. I lowered it, setting the silver against the porcelain plate with a sharp clink.

Three days. I had spent seventy-two hours mapping this fortress. The garden walls were twelve feet of solid stone, flanked by armed guards. The garage required a biometric fingerprint scan to open the gates. Even the kitchen exit, spilling into a small vegetable patch, was boxed in by iron fencing and hidden lenses. I had sketched every blind spot on a torn paper napkin and shoved it beneath the insole of my left shoe.

"I don't know what you're talking about," I lied, keeping my eyes fixed on my plate.

Dominic Castellano sat at the opposite end of the long dining table. He didn't look up from his steak. "The camera angle in the west corridor is quite sharp. I saw you fold it."

So, it wasn't just the visible cameras. The walls themselves had eyes.

"So you watch me," I said.

"I monitor my property."

"I am not your property."

"The auction house ledger says otherwise."

"The auction house is an illegal trafficking ring."

"And yet, here we are." A low, unexpected chuckle rumbled in his chest. "You are the most restless person I have ever met."

"And you're a warden," I fired back, dropping all pretense. "Since you find my captivity so entertaining, let's play a game."

He finally raised his head. Dark eyes locked onto mine. "A game?"

"A wager. One hand of Texas Hold'em. Heads up."

He wiped his mouth with a linen cloth. "What are the stakes?"

"If I win, you tear up that fake auction contract. I walk out the front door, debt free."

"And if you lose?"

"I stay. I stop looking for a way over your garden walls."

Dominic leaned back in his chair. "Why do you think I would agree to this?"

"Because you're bored," I said, pushing my plate away. "And you respect rules. Every single thing in this house runs on a schedule, a protocol, a rigid line. You like structure."

His jaw tightened for a fraction of a second, then relaxed. "I accept."

My pulse spiked.

"But I add a condition," he continued, his voice dropping an octave. "If I win, you accompany me to a private social dinner next week. You wear what I tell you to wear. You act exactly how I tell you to act. No refusal."

A public outing. A chance to scream, to run, to find a police officer in the middle of a crowded room. But also a trap.

"Deal," I said.

We moved to the study immediately. The room smelled of old paper and expensive leather. A fire cracked in the hearth, throwing erratic shadows across Dominic's face.

Marco, the broad-shouldered attendant, stepped out of the shadows. He placed a fresh deck of cards and two stacks of heavy clay chips on the mahogany desk.

"I want him out of the room," I demanded, pointing at Marco.

Dominic glanced at his attendant. "Leave us."

"Sir," Marco frowned, stepping forward. "Protocol dictates I remain present during—"

"Leave."

Marco bowed his head. The heavy oak door clicked shut. We were alone.

"Open them," I told Dominic.

He picked up the red box. His fingers moved with terrifying grace, snapping the seal, fanning the cards, and shuffling them in a seamless, fluid blur. The crisp snap of the paper echoed in the quiet room.

"You deal," he offered, sliding the deck across the green felt pad.

I grabbed the cards. I wasn't a casino professional. I grew up in the shadow of my father's ruin. Frank’s kitchen table had been a makeshift gambling den for a decade. I knew the weight of a deck. I knew the subtle shifts in a player's posture, the way a man swallowed when he held a pair of aces. It was the only weapon I had left.

I pitched the cards. Two for him, two for me.

I peeled back the corners of my hand. King of Spades. King of Hearts.

A pocket pair. The second highest starting hand in the game.

I kept my face completely blank. I didn't blink. I didn't shift my weight.

"Your bet," I said.

Dominic tossed a single red chip into the center. "Let us start small. Tell me about your father, Elena."

"My father is none of your business."

"He owed forty thousand dollars. A pittance. Yet he traded you for it."

"He didn't trade me. I was tricked."

"He signed the marker. He knew the collectors would come for his blood, or yours."

"I said, bet."

"I did bet," he pointed to the red chip. "I am waiting for your response."

I matched it, sliding my chip forward.

"No raise?" he asked, tilting his head.

"Just play."

I burned the top card and flipped the flop. Three cards face up in the center.

Four of Clubs. Nine of Diamonds. King of Clubs.

Three Kings. A set. My chest seized, but I forced my breathing to stay even.

Dominic studied the board. "The flop is dangerous. Lots of possibilities for a flush."

"Are you going to talk the whole game?"

"I am analyzing my opponent. You grip the cards too tightly. Your knuckles are white."

I forced my fingers to relax, laying my hands flat on the table.

He didn't look at his own cards again. His gaze drifted up, anchoring onto my face. He was searching for a twitch, a swallow, a shift in my pupils.

"You hide your panic well," he murmured. "But you hide your excitement poorly."

"Bet," I ordered.

He pushed a stack of blue chips forward. "Five thousand."

I looked at my remaining pile. We hadn't assigned real dollar values to the chips, but the ratio was clear. He was trying to bully me off the hand.

"You think I'm bluffing," I said.

"I think you are desperate," Dominic replied smoothly. "Desperation breeds mistakes."

"I'm not desperate. I'm focused."

I grabbed my entire stack and shoved it into the center.

"All in."

The room went dead silent. The crackle of the fireplace seemed to amplify, filling the space between us.

Dominic looked at the mountain of chips. He tapped his index finger against the edge of the table. Once. Twice.

"You want to leave that badly," he said softly.

"More than anything."

He reached for his cards, lifting the edges one last time. He let them snap back against the felt.

Then, he looked at me. A strange, sharp smile broke across his face.

He grabbed his chips and pushed them forward, matching my bet.

"Call."

I stared at the massive pile of chips in the center of the table, my heart hammering against my ribs. The trap was set, but as his dark eyes bore into mine, I suddenly didn't know who was caught in it.
