Chapter 2

I woke up to the sound of an alarm clock filtering throughout my room. I stretched a little and got up.

A pang of disappointment washed over my body as I realized Damon did not come home last night.

To brighten up my mood, I prepared breakfast for two. This was the only small gesture of affection I hoped Damon would appreciate.

With a heavy heart, I decided to take the breakfast to my boyfriend’s company. As I entered the building, the guard greeted me with a familiar smile.

"Good morning, Ma'am," he said. "You look gorgeous today!"

I forced a smile. "Thank you, is Damon in his office?"

The guard nodded. "Yes, he is. Is that a breakfast you made for him? He's really lucky to have a girlfriend like you."

I smiled and appreciated the compliment, but my heart really felt heavy. As I walked towards Damon's office, I noticed that his secretary's desk was empty. I narrowed my eyes and a hint of suspicions grew all over my body.

With trembling hands, I pushed to open the door. The sight that greeted me was a betrayal I would never forget.

Damon was sitting across from his secretary, Mathilda, sharing a breakfast that maybe she had prepared. Their laughter and casual banter seemed worlds away from the intimate moments we had shared.

My heart pounded in my chest as I approached Damon and his secretary. I tried to hide my shock, but my trembling hands betrayed me. I swallowed hard and took a deep breath.

"Damon..." I whispered, my voice was barely audible.

Finally, Damon looked at me and his smile faded. "What are you doing here, Christine?" he asked, his voice laced with confusion.

I really wanted to cry in front of him but I remained calm. I couldn't find the words to express my pain.

I was about to give him the paper bag, inside of it was our breakfast, but Mathilda snatched it in my hand, her eyes sparkled with excitement.

“What is this? Wow, Christine, did you prepare this?” Mathilda asked in excitement and opened the lunch box without my permission.

“OMG! This is my favorite, Christine! I really want this…” I saw a hint of sadness in Mathilda's eyes and looked at my boyfriend’s Damon as if she was telling something to him.

Damon, without even glancing at me, handed the breakfast to Mathilda. “If you want it, you can have it.”

I frozed for a second, unable to believe what was happening.

“You can have Mathilda’s cheesecake, Christine,” Damon offered.

I couldn’t hold back my anger anymore. “We’ve been together for so many years, Damon and you still don’t know that I am allergic to cheese?” I asked in disbelief.

The realization that he didn't even know such a simple detail about me was a bitter pill to swallow.

Damon’s expression darkened, and he looked away. “Stop making a fuss, Christine. If you don’t want it, then don’t eat it.”

I can’t stand it anymore, tears were now welled up in my eyes, threatening to spill in front of them. I really need to leave for the sake of my pride and dignity.

“Are you leaving?” Damon asked, his voice laced with surprise.

“Yeah,” I mumbled.

Sensing my distress, Damon suddenly offered, “I can give you a ride to our home.”

I was shocked upon hearing what Damon said. For the past years together, Damon had never offered to drive me home, no matter how urgent it was. He always kept work and his personal life separate.

But when it comes to Mathilda, his new secretary, she was treated like royalty.

On her first day at work, she was already getting chuffered by my partner.

“Oh! Before I forgot, we had a meeting right now. You can’t go out, Damon,” Mathilda reminded.

Damon? First name basis? Where is the respect? I couldn’t believe Mathilda was addressing him by his first name.

"Ah! That's right, I forgot about that," Damon replied, turning to Mathilda. "You're the best, Mathilda. I'm so lucky to have you as my secretary."

I was so stunned and couldn't speak. My heart aches when I hear what my boyfriend said. Damon had never praised me like that.

“I’m sorry, Christine. I’ll give you a ride next time,” he said without looking at me, instead he was looking at his watch in his hand.

As I left the company, my heart felt heavy with betrayal.

I also overheard a conversation between the two employees about Damon and his secretary when I was leaving.

“Girl, you won’t believe what I saw!” the girl excitedly said to her friend.

“What is it? What is it?” the other girl asked.

“I saw our Boss, Damon and his secretary, Mathilda together at a hotel last night! Can you believe it? They were having an affair! Our suspicions were right!”

“What the hell? So spicy!! How about his longtime girlfriend? What’s her name again?” the other girl asked.

“Christine!”

“Yeah, how about her? I mean, did they break up already??”

The words hung in the air, a chilling confirmation of my worst fears.

Tears streamed down at my face as I made my way home.

The betrayal I had witnessed was a wound that would take time to heal.

As I entered our shared home, the once familiar surroundings felt cold and empty.

The love I had once held for Damon had been shattered, replaced by a deep sense of hurt and disappointment.

I knew starting that day, my relationship with Damon was over.
