Chapter 2

The pendant wasn't under the pillow. That meant it was still where I'd left it, in the only place I'd ever really owned.

I walked back at dawn.

Marcus had left a set of borrowed clothes folded outside my door — plain grey, too long in the sleeves. I rolled them twice and went down the east stairs, past the kitchens, past the laundry, along the corridor I'd scrubbed on my hands and knees every Tuesday for five years.

The pack house was awake. It just didn't sound like it.

A cook stepped out of the pantry with a tray and saw me. The tray came down slowly against her chest, like a shield. Two warriors at the corridor's end went still, then moved aside without being told, backs pressed to the wall. One of them was Colby, who used to kick the mop bucket over and laugh about it while I wiped the water up with my sleeves.

He didn't laugh now. He looked at the floor.

Nobody spoke. Not one word, the whole length of that hallway. Five years of "Omega, move," and "Omega, faster," and suddenly my name was too heavy for their mouths.

I didn't hurry. I'd learned to hurry in this house. I wasn't doing it anymore.

My quarters were at the end of the servants' wing, past the boiler. A cot, a hook on the wall, a window the size of a dinner plate. It smelled like damp stone and old soap. I'd hated this room so long that walking into it now felt almost tender, the way you might feel toward a scar.

I knelt in the corner by the cot and worked my fingers into the seam of the third floorboard. It came up the way it always did, with a groan and a snap.

The pendant lay in the hollow underneath, wrapped in a scrap of cloth. Tarnished silver, a crescent inside a circle, worn smooth on one edge from twenty years of my thumb. Marion Graves had pressed it into my hand the night she died and said, *this came with you.* I'd thought she meant the orphanage. I'd thought it was junk.

I closed my fist around it.

Then I turned the floorboard over.

The underside was covered in scratch marks. Rows of them, thin lines carved with a bent nail, four upright and one across, over and over until the wood was almost more mark than grain. I'd stopped counting out loud years ago, but I knew the number the way I knew my own pulse.

One thousand eight hundred twenty-six.

Five years. Plus a day for the leap year. Plus the night on the infirmary cot, which I'd carved first, before I understood that I'd be carving so many more.

I ran my thumb across them once. The wood caught on my calluses. Every ridge of that board matched every ridge on my hands, and for a moment I couldn't tell which one was the record.

I thought about leaving it. Walking out clean.

Then I tucked it under my arm and stood up.

They were not going to sand this away. They were not going to put a new cot in this room and forget. This board was going to sit on a table in front of men who called themselves elders, and they were going to count.

Ghost was waiting behind the woodshed when I came out, his scarred ear flat, his body low. He pressed his head into my knee hard enough to make me stumble. "I know," I said. "I know."

Marcus sent word to the stronghold that morning.

Two days later the gates of Shadowmere opened for a royal envoy.

I heard it from the guest wing — hooves, engines, the particular silence that falls over a pack when something bigger than its Alpha walks through the door. Six riders in royal grey. The King's seal on a leather case. And ahead of them, a man who didn't look at Damian at all.

I didn't see that part. I only learned later that Damian had stood in his own courtyard with his hand out, and no one took it.

What I knew was this: I was sitting by the window with the floorboard across my knees, my shoulders still purple from the shift, when something rolled up the stairs ahead of the footsteps.

Cedar. Cold iron. Snow on stone.

Seraphine came awake under my ribs like a struck bell. *Him.*

The door opened.

He filled it. Dark coat, dark hair, a ceremonial dagger at his belt that had clearly never needed to be drawn. His face was schooled into something calm and diplomatic — and then it wasn't. His nostrils flared once. His hand closed on the doorframe hard enough that the wood creaked.

He stared at me like a man finding a house he'd only ever dreamed about.

My hollow mark, the cold dead thing on my neck that had ached every night for five years, went quiet. Just — quiet. Like a wound remembering it was allowed to close.

Neither of us said the word.

He stepped in. Stopped a careful distance away, which I noticed, and which mattered more than he could have known. His eyes dropped to my hands on the floorboard. To the calluses. To the split knuckles.

Something moved behind his face. He put it away.

"Valentina Graves." His voice was low, measured, controlled to the last syllable. "I'm Alaric Voss. I've come to verify a bloodline claim."

"Verify it, then," I said, and opened my fist.

The pendant lay in my palm, tarnished and small and shaking slightly, because my hands still shook. He looked at it for a long moment without touching it.

"May I?"

No one in this house had asked me permission for anything in five years.

"Yes," I said.

The archivist confirmed it in under an hour. Crescent in circle, three notches on the inner rim, foundry mark matched to a royal seal record dated the year of the raid. The old man's hands trembled so badly he had to set the ledger down.

At noon, Alaric convened Shadowmere's Council of Elders in Damian's own hall.

I walked in last and set the floorboard on the table.

"Twenty-three years ago," Alaric said, "a child was taken from the royal nursery. She was not sold. She was not killed. She was raised two territories from her father's door." He let the silence stretch. "For the last five years, she has cleaned this hall."

The chamber erupted.

I didn't watch the elders. I watched the warriors along the wall — the ones who'd stepped over me while I wiped their boot prints up, the ones who'd laughed. Not one of them could hold my eyes for longer than a breath.

And I watched Damian.

He stood at the head of his own table, his father's Alpha ring catching the light, and he had gone the color of ash. His nostrils flared. His whole body flinched — a real flinch, visible, humiliating — like something had struck him across the face.

I knew that flinch. I'd seen it a hundred times over three years and never understood it.

He was smelling lavender and rain.

His eyes came up and found mine, wild, wet, ruined. His mouth opened.

"Alpha Cole," Alaric said, without raising his voice at all, "you will address the council. Not the Princess."

Damian's mouth closed.

And across the table, in the doorway behind him, Peyton's manicured hand tightened slowly on the frame until one perfect nail split down the middle.
