Chapter 1

Pain ripped through my abdomen, tearing a sharp scream from my throat.

Shattered glass and the screech of twisting metal still echoed in my ears, but the harsh, blinding lights of the Frostpine Pack hospital dragged me back to the present.

"Push the gurney! We're losing her!" a nurse yelled, sprinting alongside my bed.

I grabbed the metal rail, my knuckles turning white. "My baby. Please."

"Stay with us, Luna," Dr. Thorne said. His gloved hands pressed hard against my swollen stomach, trying to stem the bleeding. "You are going straight into surgery."

They shoved the double doors open. The emergency bay was a chaotic mess of shouting medics and blaring monitors. Another gurney sat a few yards away, surrounded by a swarm of nurses. The other pregnant woman from the crash.

Then, a voice cut through the noise. Deep. Familiar.

Kevin. My mate. My Alpha.

"What is the status?" Kevin demanded.

I turned my head. He stood in the hallway, his clothes rumpled, his expression frantic. Hope flared in my chest. He was here.

"Alpha," a senior surgeon replied, stepping into Kevin's path. "Two pregnant women came in from the collision. Both are critical. We only have one primary trauma team available right now."

"Take the trauma team to the younger woman," Kevin ordered.

The monitors beside me spiked. I froze, my fingers slipping from the metal rail.

"Alpha?" the surgeon asked, his tone faltering. "But Luna Zoe... she's carrying your pup. Her vitals are dropping rapidly. She needs the primary team."

"Just do what I say!" Kevin snapped. "Zoe has a strong physique. She is a tough wolf. She won't die. The other woman looks far more serious. Save her first!"

"Understood, Alpha," the surgeon said.

Footsteps rushed away. The heavy doors swung shut, sealing me inside the operating room.

Silence settled over my side of the room, save for the rhythmic, terrifying beeping of the machines. The army of medical staff had vanished, following their Alpha's command.

"Dr. Thorne," Nurse Clara whispered, staring at the empty space where the surgical team had just been standing. "They took everyone. It's just us."

"We don't need them," Dr. Thorne muttered. He grabbed a scalpel from the metal tray. "Prep her for an emergency C-section. Now."

"Doctor, I'm bleeding too much," I gasped, the room spinning.

"I know," he said, not looking up. "Clara, get the IV lines in. Push the fluids."

"Yes, Doctor." Clara's hands shook as she tore open a plastic package.

A fresh wave of agony hit me. I curled inward, biting my lip until the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth. Kevin's words played on a loop in my mind. *She is a tough wolf. She won't die.*

"I need B-type blood," Dr. Thorne shouted over the wailing monitors. "Get four units from the bank. Hurry."

Clara darted out of the room. I stared at the ceiling tiles, counting the tiny holes in the acoustic panels to keep myself from passing out.

Seconds later, Clara returned. Her face was entirely pale.

"Where is the blood?" Dr. Thorne asked, his hands covered in crimson.

"It's gone," Clara stammered.

"What do you mean gone? We ordered five units of B-negative this morning."

"Alpha Kevin redirected them," she said, her voice dropping to a whisper.

"Explain," I managed to choke out, forcing my heavy eyelids open.

Clara wouldn't meet my eyes. "Alpha Kevin... he ordered the blood bank to send every drop of B-type to Operating Room Two."

"For the other woman," I said.

"Yes, Luna."

My chest tightened. He took my surgical team. Now he was taking my blood. He left me and our unborn child on this table with nothing.

"Use the synthetic plasma," Dr. Thorne commanded, his jaw clenching. "Hold on, Zoe. Do not close your eyes. Look at me."

"I'm cold," I whispered.

"I'm saving both of you," he grunted, working with frantic precision. "Clara, clamp that artery. Give me more suction."

"Her blood pressure is tanking!" Clara yelled.

"Keep her awake!"

"Luna! Zoe, talk to me," Clara pleaded, tapping my cheek. "What are you going to name the baby?"

"Leo," I breathed out. "If it's a boy."

"Leo is a strong name," Clara said, her voice cracking. "Stay awake for Leo."

The machines blared a continuous, high-pitched warning. Darkness edged into my vision. I didn't fight it anymore. I just let the cold pull me under.

A steady, rhythmic beeping woke me.

I opened my eyes to a dim, quiet room. The smell of antiseptic stung my nose. A heavy bandage wrapped tightly around my abdomen.

"You're awake."

I turned my head. Dr. Thorne stood at the foot of my bed, holding a chart.

"My baby?" I asked, my throat dry and scratchy.

"A boy," Dr. Thorne said, a faint smile touching his exhausted face. "He is small, but he is in the NICU. He is going to make it. And so are you."

"Thank you," I whispered, tears pricking my eyes. "Thank you for not leaving me."

"Rest, Luna," he said, setting the chart down. "I will check on you in an hour."

He walked out, leaving the door slightly ajar.

I stared out the window into the dark night. My body ached, but the pain in my chest hurt worse. Kevin hadn't come. I almost died, and my mate was nowhere to be found.

Footsteps approached the hallway outside my room. Whispers followed.

"You need to pay attention, Maya," the Head Nurse hissed. "Room 104. That is Luna Zoe."

"Wait, seriously?" Maya, a young nurse, asked. "I swore the woman in 102 was the Luna."

"Why would you think that?" the Head Nurse snapped.

"Because Alpha Kevin hasn't left 102 for a single second," Maya replied. "He was holding her hand, kissing her forehead. He looked absolutely terrified when she coded. He even gave her his jacket. If that's not his mate, who is she?"

"Keep your voice down," the Head Nurse scolded. "The Alpha's private life is none of your business. Get back to your station."

"I just thought..." Maya trailed off. "I mean, he didn't even ask about the patient in 104."

The footsteps faded down the corridor.

I lay in the dark. A bitter laugh escaped my throat, echoing in the empty room.

I knew exactly who was in Room 102.

Bella.

Kevin's first love.

She left the pack three years ago, breaking his heart. I picked up the pieces. I stood by his side, helped him build his territory, and carried his child. But the moment she returned, the moment she was in danger, I ceased to exist.

He didn't just choose to save a stranger. He chose to save her.

I pulled the thin hospital blanket up to my chin, staring at the empty doorway.

Then, the handle to my room slowly turned.

The door pushed open, and a tall silhouette stepped into the dim light.

"Zoe?" Kevin whispered, his voice thick with exhaustion.

I didn't answer.

He stepped closer to the bed, his eyes scanning my pale face. "Are you awake?"
