Chapter 8

The moment the door clicked shut, Laura's eyes opened, her gaze sharp and unyielding. Her phone buzzed softly beside her, the screen lighting up with a message from the robotics institute.

[Professor, Model 001's training is complete. Please visit the lab to determine if further adjustments are necessary.]

Sliding out of bed with quiet precision, Laura dressed swiftly. She grabbed her coat, wrapping it tightly around herself as if to guard against the creeping chill of the morning and the void in her chest.

The institute was nestled atop Oakmont Hospital, a deliberate choice due to the expertise required in human anatomy, physiology, and psychology to create lifelike androids. The state-of-the-art facility was a juxtaposition of gleaming glass walls and buzzing machinery, where science blurred the line between man and machine.

As Laura entered the lab, she was greeted by the faint hum of servers and the quiet efficiency of her team. At the center of the room stood Model 001.

The android turned toward her, its movements graceful and deliberate, mirroring Laura's mannerisms with uncanny precision. When it smiled, the corners of its mouth curved exactly like hers. The tilt of its head, the way it blinked, even the cadence of its breath—it was as if Laura were staring into a polished mirror.

Her colleagues looked on, awaiting her feedback. Laura circled Model 001, her sharp eyes scanning its every detail.

"Perfect," she finally said, her voice calm but firm. "Run an additional test cycle to ensure stability, and start preparing for phase two. I'll review the data tomorrow."

As she stepped into the elevator to leave, the weight of her double life pressed against her chest. For months, she had poured herself into creating Model 001, crafting it to be indistinguishable from herself. Soon, it would be her stand-in, her escape route, her decoy for a life she no longer wanted.

The elevator doors opened with a soft chime, and Laura stepped into the hospital's bustling corridors. As she rounded a corner, familiar voices floated toward her, stopping her in her tracks.

"Hector, if I really am pregnant, can we please not abort it?"

Laura froze, her heartbeat a sharp, uneven drumbeat in her ears. She followed the voices, her breath shallow as she approached.

There they were—Hector and Olivia.

Hector's brows were furrowed, his expression impatient yet restrained. Olivia clung to his sleeve, her face streaked with tears, desperation etched into every word.

"Hector," Olivia pleaded, her voice trembling, "this is my first baby—and your first child too. I can't bear to lose it. I swear, I'll behave. Laura will never find out. Please... can't we keep it?"

Hector sneered, his voice cold enough to cut glass. "Laura hasn't even given birth yet. Why should I have my first child with you?"

Olivia sobbed harder, her shoulders shaking. "I'll do anything, Hector. Just... don't make me go through with it."

Hector hesitated, his jaw tightening. Finally, he relented, though his tone remained detached.

"Go get the check-up first. Whether we keep it or not... I'll decide later."

Sniffling, Olivia nodded and disappeared into a nearby consultation room.

Laura stood rooted in place, her mind reeling. Her hands felt icy, her chest hollow. 'Olivia... pregnant?' The words echoed in her mind like a cruel refrain.

She wasn't sure how she managed to move, but her feet carried her forward.

Hector turned at the sound of her approach. For a split second, his expression faltered, but he quickly replaced it with an air of concern.

"Laura?" His voice was filled with alarm as he closed the distance between them. "Why are you at the hospital? Are you feeling unwell?"

Before she could respond, he gripped her arm gently but firmly, his eyes scanning her face for any sign of distress.

"You look pale," he continued, his voice softening. "What's wrong? Tell me."

Laura's lips parted, but no words came. The warmth of his touch, the tenderness in his gaze—it was all so meticulously crafted, so perfectly rehearsed, that she almost laughed.

"I'm fine," she said finally, her voice steady though her hands trembled. "It's just my stomach. The doctor told me to come in for a follow-up."

Relief flooded Hector's face, and he pulled her into a tight embrace, burying his face in her hair.

"You scared me to death, baby," he murmured.

Laura stiffened in his arms, her voice cutting through the fragile silence. "Hector, are you really worried about me?"

He held her tighter, his voice thick with feigned sincerity. "How could I not be worried? The moment I saw you, my heart began to race. I honestly don't know how I'd go on without you."

Her smile was faint, almost imperceptible. "Then what are you doing at the hospital?"

His hold on her loosened, and for the briefest moment, she saw something flicker in his eyes—hesitation, perhaps fear.

"I came to visit a professor," he said smoothly, his tone unwavering. "He's been hospitalized."

Laura said nothing, her silence more damning than any accusation.

On the drive home, Hector's phone buzzed incessantly, the sound grating against the tense atmosphere. With an annoyed huff, he turned it off entirely.

"There's so much trivial stuff at school," he muttered, his tone irritated but affectionate as he glanced at her. "But today, nothing is going to take me away from you. No one is more important than my Laura."

Laura turned her gaze to the window, the city blurring into streaks of color as they sped through familiar streets. Once, those streets had been filled with laughter and love, the foundation of countless memories. Now, they felt like a graveyard of broken promises.

The sweetness of their past—the whispered words, the gentle touches—was now a double-edged sword, cutting deeper with every recollection.

As Hector drove on, oblivious to her inner turmoil, Laura felt an unfamiliar calm wash over her. It wasn't the calm of peace but the stillness of resolve. Her heart, once overflowing with love, had turned to stone, and she knew there was no turning back.
