Chapter 2

Laura loved the golden glow of sunrise spilling over the jagged peaks of distant mountains. Hector had taken her on a destination photoshoot for their wedding, knowing how much the view meant to her. She remembered the soft crunch of frost underfoot as they posed in the early morning light, their photographer capturing moments of supposed love and devotion.

But the memory was now tarnished. Every night that Hector had claimed to be out catching up with old friends, he had instead been entangled with that new lecturer. The betrayal felt like an icy dagger piercing her soul—cold, searing, and utterly devastating.

Laura scrolled through the wedding pictures sent by her photographer. Her gaze lingered on a picture of Hector's hands holding hers, their rings catching the golden light. She was transported back to the day he proposed.

It had been at the seaside where they'd first become a couple. Waves lapped softly against the shore, the salt air mingling with the scent of wildflowers that grew along the dunes. Hector had stood before her, his eyes shimmering with nervous anticipation. He knelt on one knee, a dazzling diamond ring glinting in the sunlight.

"Laura Moore," he began, his voice trembling slightly, "no matter how the winds and storms change, I will love only you. I vow to be your most loyal companion forever."

Laura had cried that day, overcome with joy and a belief in his sincerity. But now, as she stared at the photos, those words rang hollow.

Once unfaithful, forever unwelcome.

Hector had broken the vow he made so earnestly. The man who promised to weather life's storms with her had sought shelter in someone else's arms.

Her chest tightened, her breath shallow as her decision solidified. She would personally present him with a substitute—a lifeless entity incapable of heartbreak—and then vanish completely from his life.

As night fell, streetlights glittered like scattered stars against the darkness. Laura slipped her phone into her coat pocket, her heart tangled in a web of pain, anger, and cold determination. She opened her car door, slid inside, and began the drive home.

When she arrived, a familiar figure was pacing at the villa's entrance. Hector.

"Laura!" he called out, relief flooding his face as she stepped out of the car. He hurried to her side, his brows furrowed in concern. "You're finally back! Didn't we agree to have dinner together? I was worried sick when I couldn't find you."

His voice was thick with care, his gaze searching her face as if afraid she might disappear again. For a fleeting moment, his genuine concern tugged at her heart, threatening to crack the icy resolve she'd built.

But then, like thorns beneath her skin, the doubts returned. How could someone who claimed to love her so deeply betray her so completely?

"Sorry, I lost track of time at the lab," she replied with a small smile, masking the storm within.

Today was Christmas. They had planned to celebrate with dinner at the new French restaurant in Oakmont, but it was already too late, and the restaurant had closed. Hector suggested their favorite late-night snack shop near campus instead.

The shop was small and cozy, the scent of fried dough and grilled meats wafting into the chilly night air. The moment they entered, the owner greeted them warmly, his eyes lighting up in recognition.

"Oh, it's you, Mr. Moss! Bringing your girlfriend for a late-night snack again?" he said with a chuckle. "I was about to close, but since you're here, I can stay open a bit longer."

"When you get married, don't forget to send me an invitation," he added with a grin. "I'll gift you a serving of our shop's signature dessert."

Hector laughed, his hand brushing Laura's lightly. "Of course. We'll make sure you're the first to know."

The warmth in his voice was disarming, almost convincing. But Laura's chest ached with the weight of unspoken truths. She managed a polite smile but couldn't bring herself to respond. She alone knew she'd never taste that dessert.

The first dish had just arrived when Hector's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, and for a split second, his expression changed—an unmistakable flicker of desire.

Laura's stomach churned. That look was one she recognized all too well. She had seen it before in the intimate photos Olivia had sent, flaunting her conquest.

Feeling Laura's gaze, Hector quickly pocketed his phone and leaned toward her. "Sorry, Laura," he said, his tone apologetic but firm. "The head of the department just texted me. Something urgent has come up, and I have to go take care of it. I'm afraid I can't stay for dinner."

He kissed her forehead lightly before standing, his movements hurried. Laura watched as he left, his figure vanishing into the night.

The shop owner glanced at her, a puzzled expression on his face. "Miss Moore, you've ordered so much food. You won't be able to finish it all by yourself. Should I still serve it all?"

Laura took a deep breath, steadying herself. "Yes, bring it all," she replied, her voice carrying a quiet finality. "Whatever I can't finish, I'll pack to go."

She sat in the empty shop, the untouched dishes before her a silent testament to the life she was about to leave behind.

Later, as she hailed a ride home, she stared out the window at the falling snow. The flakes drifted gently, blanketing the bustling city in a pristine white coat. It was so pure, so beautiful—a sharp contrast to the darkness she felt inside.

This Christmas, like the snow, she resolved to let herself fall quietly into obscurity, leaving no trace behind.
