Chapter 5

"Yes," I told her, taking the heavy metal frame from her hands. "That is the man from the courtroom."

I stared through the glass at the photograph. It was nine years old. Liam and I stood on a windy beach, his arm wrapped around my waist, his face turned toward the camera with a wide, reckless grin.

"Did he die and come back to life?" Rosie asked, her small fingers tracing the edge of the wood banister.

"No," I said, keeping my voice entirely level. "He just left for a very long time. Now he is back."

"Does Noah stop being Dad now?"

I carried the photo to the dining table. I set it down next to the clear plastic folder holding her scribbled-over blue crayon card. The two objects sat inches apart, a physical collision of her past and her present.

"Love does not lose points because the truth came out," I told her, pulling out a chair so she could sit. "But names and rules take time to sort out."

A sharp knock hammered against the front door.

I walked into the foyer and pulled the brass handle. Margaret stood on the porch under the yellow bulb. She held a long white garment bag draped over her left arm.

"Canceling the fitting only breeds instability, Ava," Margaret announced, stepping forward to push past me.

I planted my feet in the center of the doorway, blocking her path.

Rosie slid off her chair in the dining room. She backed up until her shoulders hit the wall, hiding half her body behind the tall wooden backrest.

"Do not bring that dress inside," I said.

Margaret gripped the plastic hanger tightly. "You are letting a stunt in a courtroom ruin this family. You want that man dragging the stench of a clinic into her bedroom?"

I reached over to the console table and grabbed the gray shoebox. I shoved it right up to Margaret's chest.

"Did you smell the ink on these envelopes when you locked them away?" I asked, my voice slicing through the quiet night. "Did you check the postmarks for the birthdays she missed before you threw them in a closet?"

Margaret flinched, her eyes darting to the cardboard lid. "I intercepted them, yes. But I did not act alone."

"You stole my mail."

"Noah was the final adult who agreed to protect her," Margaret shot back, her tone sharp and unyielding. "He made the decision to keep that box shut."

The silence that followed was absolute.

I turned my head. Rosie stood perfectly still behind the chair. Her wide eyes shifted from the white garment bag to the gray shoebox, processing the confession. The confusion on her face vanished, replaced by a devastating, quiet betrayal.

Footsteps scraped against the concrete steps behind Margaret.

Noah walked into the glow of the porch light. He wore the same wrinkled suit from the courthouse. He did not look at his mother. He looked straight past my shoulder, directly at Rosie.

He had heard every word.

"I just came for my medical kit," Noah said, his voice stripped of its usual authority.

Margaret turned to him. "Noah, tell her we were securing her future."

Noah ignored her. He kept his eyes locked on the little girl hiding behind the dining chair.

"I should have told your mom," Noah said to Rosie.

Rosie did not run to him. She did not reach out her arms. She gripped the wooden spindle of the chair back.

"And me?" Rosie asked.

Noah swallowed hard. The muscle in his jaw trembled. "And you."

He stepped forward, reaching a hand toward the doorframe. I shifted my weight, closing the gap. I did not let him cross the threshold.

"Wait here," I told him.

I walked to the kitchen counter, grabbed the purple bottle of his allergy pills, and walked back to the foyer. I pressed the plastic cylinder into his palm.

"Goodnight, Noah," I said.

I shut the heavy door in his face and threw the deadbolt.

The house stayed quiet for exactly two hours.

At eight forty-seven, another knock rattled the wood.

I opened the door, expecting Noah to be standing there demanding entry. Instead, a man in a navy uniform stood on the welcome mat. He held a clipboard in one hand and a thick manila envelope in the other.

"Ava Bennett?" he asked.

"Yes."

He peeled a yellow sticker off the envelope and slapped the package flat against the door panel. "Court courier. You have been served."

He turned and walked down the steps before I could respond.

I ripped the envelope off the wood and tore the flap open. A stack of legal documents slid into my hands. The top page bore the official seal of the Massachusetts Probate and Family Court.

Emergency Petition for Supervised Visitation.

I scanned the bold text. Liam requested thirty minutes with the minor child tomorrow afternoon at three o'clock. The second page contained a signed lease agreement for a two-bedroom apartment in Boston. The third page held a certified discharge summary from St. Brigid Recovery.

He was not asking for a favor. He was demanding his legal right.

Rosie walked into the hallway, dragging her stuffed rabbit by its ear. She pointed at the papers in my hand.

"Is that from the judge?" she asked.

I knelt down to her eye level. "It is from Liam."

She leaned closer, her eyes scanning the black text. She could read well enough to catch the bold headings. Her finger hovered over the words biological father printed next to his name.

"Is the court going to make me pick?" Rosie asked, her voice tight.

"Nobody is making you pick anything," I said, folding the papers in half.

I stood up, pulled my phone from my back pocket, and dialed the number printed at the bottom of the petition. The line rang twice before a woman answered.

"Claire Monroe," the voice said.

"This is Ava Bennett," I told the evaluator. "I just received the courier delivery."

"Mr. Ward submitted his complete medical records and proof of residency an hour ago," Claire explained, her tone strictly professional. "The judge approved the preliminary review. The supervised visitation is mandatory."

"Tomorrow at three," I confirmed, staring at the locked front door.

"At the courthouse annex," Claire said. "I will be in the room the entire time."

I ended the call and lowered the phone.

Rosie stood beside the console table, watching my face. She dropped the stuffed rabbit onto the hardwood floor.

"If Noah comes too, which one am I supposed to call Dad?" she asked.
