Chapter 5

Today marked our wedding anniversary. Two decades of being married. Twenty years of swallowing my pride, keeping quiet, dimming myself to keep the peace. Two decades of fading into the background until I barely recognized my own life.

And today… I was walking away from all of it.

I stood near the door in simple clothes, watching the house buzz with energy—an energy that had absolutely nothing to do with me. They bustled around the living room, tossing clothes into suitcases, chattering excitedly about their trip.

A vacation to see the northern lights. My lifelong dream. Paid for with money I had scraped together myself.

Tristan sauntered over and dropped a bag in front of me.

“Carry that,” he ordered. “You’re coming with us to the airport.”

My brows lifted. “Why am I even going?”

“You think I wanted you tagging along?” he muttered. “Alyssa felt bad. Said it might look harsh to leave you completely. But don’t get any ideas—you’re stuck in economy. We’re flying first.”

His tone didn’t waver. It was as normal to him as breathing. Then he walked off, calling for Alyssa and Noah to hurry.

I stared at the bag for a long moment, then picked it up and followed them outside.

In the car, I was shoved into the back seat with the luggage, like another suitcase no one cared about. The three of them joked and laughed the whole ride.

Noah went on about fancy food spots he wanted to try. Alyssa rambled about taking photos in the snow. Tristan bragged about how much the resort cost, clearly proud of spending my money.

No one acknowledged me.

Not a word.

Not even a glance.

I wasn’t a partner. I wasn’t a mother. I wasn’t family.

I was a shadow.

I looked down at my phone and typed a message to Treston:

Plans changed. They’re dragging me to the airport. Meet me at Gate 12. I’ll find you.

His reply appeared instantly:

Understood. I’ll be waiting. It all ends tonight.

I lifted my eyes toward the laughing trio in front. Their joy rolled through the car like a celebration I had never been invited to. But it didn’t matter anymore.

I was leaving for good.

And the gift I was giving them—on our twentieth anniversary—was the illusion of my death.

At the airport, they rushed ahead, eager to check in. Passports out. Documents ready. Smiles bright.

Then it was my turn at the counter.

The staff member tapped on her keyboard, frowned, and said, “Ma’am, your reservation isn’t valid. There’s no confirmed seat under your name.”

I stared blankly, though I knew exactly what this was.

“Oh, that’s right!” Alyssa said suddenly, widening her eyes dramatically. “Your flight got moved to tomorrow. I forgot to mention it.”

Tristan shrugged in my direction. “Just follow us tomorrow. Go back home for now. Keep an eye on the house.”

So predictable.

I forced a small smile. “Sure. Enjoy yourselves.”

“Perfect!” Alyssa beamed. She looped her arm with Tristan’s. “Before we leave—take a picture of us?”

Noah shoved his phone into my hand without even looking. “Make it decent. Not blurry like your usual.”

My grip didn’t tremble this time. I lifted the phone, centered them, and clicked—capturing the perfect portrait of betrayal.

Tristan.

Alyssa.

Noah.

Beaming like a postcard family I had never truly belonged to.

I handed the phone back. Noah didn’t thank me. Alyssa was reapplying lipstick. Tristan was on another call complaining to the hotel staff.

I turned to walk away, ready to slip back into the invisibility they preferred, when Alyssa unexpectedly stopped me.

She hugged me. Her arms wrapped tight around me, her perfume thick and choking.

“You should come soon,” she murmured near my ear. “We’ll wait for you in Finland. Don’t miss the lights, okay?”

Then she leaned back and smiled—too polished, too sweet—and dropped her voice to a whisper again, the venom unmistakable.

“Actually… I didn’t book you anything at all. Why would I waste money on that?” She flicked imaginary dust from my collar. “Stay where you belong.”

I looked directly at her, my expression calm and unreadable.

“I know exactly where I belong,” I replied.

She blinked, thrown off by how steady I sounded. There was no panic, no pleading. Just certainty.

“And by the time you three come back,” I added softly, “I’ll be long gone.”

“Alyssa, let’s go. We’ll miss boarding,” Tristan called impatiently.

Noah tugged her arm. “Come on.”

I watched them disappear through the boarding gate, their silhouettes moving easily, carefree, not a single backward look. Not even from my own son.

When they vanished into the tunnel, I closed my eyes for a brief second.

Breathed.

Then I turned around.

And there he was.

Treston stood a few feet away at Gate 12, dressed in dark clothes, sunglasses pushed up, composed as always. A quiet force.

He approached without hesitation. “Are you ready?”

I nodded. “More than I’ve ever been.”

We walked together toward the opposite gate, our footsteps soft. The silence wrapped around us like protection.

On the plane, I took the window seat. Treston settled beside me. The cool air and the drone of the engines felt like the universe exhaling.

I reached into my bag, pulled out my phone, popped the SIM card out… and slid open the small window flap just enough.

I tossed the SIM into the wind. No second thoughts.

By the time they return home in a few days…

They will hear I’m dead.

And at last—truly, finally—I will be free.
