Chapter 2

The air in the warehouse was thick and wet, tasting of mold and fear. Ethan Knox pressed himself smaller, trying to shield the little boy huddled behind him. The boy, Leo, was trembling so hard Ethan could feel the vibrations through his own thin shirt.

A man with greasy hair and a gold tooth paced in front of them, the steel of his rifle scraping against a rusty oil drum. He barked something in a language Ethan didn't understand, his tone impatient and cruel.

Another man, younger and with a vicious grin, started toward them. He reached for Ethan, his grimy fingers like claws.

Instinct took over. Ethan twisted away, shielding Leo with his body, and sank his teeth into the man's leg. Hard.

The man roared in pain and surprise, shaking his leg violently. He raised the butt of his rifle, aiming for Ethan's head. Ethan squeezed his eyes shut, a sob catching in his throat.

And then the world went black.

The single, bare bulb hanging from the rafters blinked out. The generator outside sputtered and died. Absolute, suffocating darkness fell over the warehouse, swallowing every shape and shadow.

The traffickers shouted in confusion, their voices sharp with alarm. One of them fumbled for a light.

A soft, wet sound cut through the chaos. It was quiet, like tearing fabric. A heavy body slumped to the concrete floor. There was no scream.

Ethan held his breath, his heart hammering against his ribs. Leo whimpered, and Ethan clamped a hand over the boy's mouth, his own terror a cold knot in his stomach.

A powerful beam from a tactical flashlight cut through the darkness, swinging wildly. The lead trafficker was panicking now, his light dancing across stacked crates and empty corners.

The beam swept past a pillar. For a split second, there was nothing. The moment the light moved on, a shadow detached itself from the deeper shadows behind the pillar.

Another trafficker raised his weapon, but a hand, cold and impossibly fast, clamped down on his wrist. A sickening crack echoed in the silence. His scream was choked off before it could even begin.

The leader was frantic. He grabbed Leo, yanking the small boy in front of him like a shield. He pressed the muzzle of his gun to Leo's temple.

"Who's there?" he screamed in broken English. "Show yourself! Or I kill the boy!"

A voice answered from the darkness. It was female, cold as a tombstone, and seemed to come from everywhere at once.

"You touch him, you die."

Ethan's entire body went rigid. He knew that voice. Through the fear, a surge of impossible, disbelieving hope flooded him. Avery.

The leader spun, firing blindly into the direction of the voice. Bullets sparked off a metal shipping container, the ricochets whining through the air.

When the gunfire stopped, the silence that followed was even more terrifying. A faint scraping sound came from directly above him.

He jerked his head up, pointing the flashlight beam toward the high rafters.

She was there. A figure clad in black, perched on a steel beam like a panther, utterly silent. The light caught her eyes, and they held no emotion at all. Only a flat, lethal focus.

Before the man could even process what he was seeing, she dropped.

She didn't make a sound. She landed in a crouch, one leg sweeping out to kick the rifle from his hand. At the same time, her other hand shot out, twisting his wrist at an agonizing angle, forcing him to release his grip on Leo.

She pulled the boy free and pushed him gently toward Ethan, the entire sequence a blur of fluid, deadly motion.

The leader, disarmed and desperate, reached for a knife at his belt.

He was too slow.

Avery's hand chopped down on the side of his neck. His eyes rolled back in his head, and he collapsed in a heap, unconscious.

She didn't kill him. She pulled a zip-tie from her vest and, with practiced efficiency, bound his hands and feet.

The warehouse's backup generator sputtered to life, casting a dim, yellow light over the scene. Two bodies lay in pools of their own blood. The leader was hog-tied and twitching on the floor.

Avery walked over to Ethan. She knelt, her movements stiff, as if she was re-learning how to be gentle. She reached out and brushed a smudge of dirt from his cheek with her fingertips. Her hand was shaking, just slightly.

"I'm here," she said, her voice rough and laced with a tremor she couldn't hide. "It's okay now."

That was all it took. The dam of terror and adrenaline inside Ethan broke. He launched himself into her arms, burying his face in her shoulder, and sobbed.

Avery wrapped her arms around him, holding him tight. The cold, terrifying specter of Wraith vanished, and in its place was just a sister, her entire body trembling with a mixture of ferocious love and the sickening echo of what could have been.
