Chapter 3

I found Sophie's lipstick on a Tuesday morning.

It was nestled in the guest bathroom—Chanel Rouge Allure in Pirate, a shade too bold for my taste but perfect for her calculated image. The gold tube gleamed accusingly under the vanity lights, forgotten or perhaps deliberately left behind after their "late-night strategy session."

I picked it up with tissue paper, careful not to smudge any fingerprints, and photographed it against the white marble countertop. Date, time, location—all documented in my growing digital archive. Then I placed it in a clear plastic bag labeled "Evidence Item #12" and stored it in a box in the garage, hidden behind Christmas decorations Daniel never bothered to help unpack.

Two days later, it was a delicate gold hair clip on our bedroom nightstand.

Three days after that, a pair of Louboutin stilettos by our front door.

Each item joined my collection, each photograph added to my file. I was building a museum of my husband's betrayal, cataloging it with the same methodical precision I'd used to build his empire.

Daniel barely noticed my silence on the subject. The IPO dominated his conversations—when he bothered to speak to me at all. Most evenings, he returned home after midnight, his collar smelling of Sophie's signature Jo Malone perfume, his excuses growing thinner.

"The investors needed reassurance," he'd say, not meeting my eyes. Or, "Sophie helped me polish the presentation."

I nodded and continued typing emails to the clients who actually trusted me—the ones who'd never seen my face but relied on my judgment disguised as Daniel's. With each response, I planted tiny seeds for my future.

"I've been considering expanding into independent consulting," I wrote to James Morrison, whose account I'd personally saved three times when Daniel nearly lost it through carelessness.

His response came within minutes: "About time, Elena. I've always known you were the brains behind Daniel's operation. If you ever go independent, I'm your first client."

I saved his email in a folder marked "Future Clients" and continued working.

The breaking point came on a Thursday evening when I found a black lace bra tangled among Daniel's dress shirts in the laundry basket.

I stared at it for a long moment, the delicate fabric stark against the white cotton. Then I folded it carefully, photographed it from three angles, and added it to my box in the garage. Item #23.

That night, Daniel announced Sophie would be joining us for dinner again.

"She's been invaluable with the IPO preparations," he said, adjusting his cufflinks—the ones I'd given him for our anniversary. "I thought you might make that pasta she liked."

"Of course," I replied, my voice pleasantly empty.

Sophie arrived at seven, wearing a red dress that stopped me cold in the entryway. I recognized it immediately—a perfect replica of the dress I'd worn to Daniel's first major industry award ceremony eight years ago. The only formal event I'd attended before my "social anxiety" became our shared excuse.

She twirled in front of me, her smile sharp as a blade. "Do you like it? Daniel said it looked familiar."

I studied her with clinical detachment, noting the way the fabric pulled slightly across her hips, how the neckline gaped where it should have fit smoothly.

"It's a beautiful dress," I said finally. "Though I've always thought it requires a certain substance to wear properly."

Something flickered across her face—uncertainty, perhaps, or the first glimmer of recognition that she'd underestimated her opponent.

"Elena has always had impeccable taste," Daniel interjected, oblivious to the current running between us. "Sophie, you look lovely. Shall we eat?"

Over dinner, I watched them perform their practiced routine—Sophie's theatrical laughter, Daniel's puffed-up stories of boardroom dominance. I served food I didn't taste and smiled at jokes that weren't funny.

And beneath the table, I sent a text to Marcus Rodriguez: "I'm ready to talk. Tomorrow, 2 PM."

The ghost was preparing to step into the light.
