Chapter 2

I shoved three pairs of houndstooth chef pants and a stack of plain white tees into my battered Samsonite. The zipper screamed as I yanked it around the corners.

"Are you seriously throwing a tantrum right now?"

Julian leaned against the bedroom doorframe, crossing his arms over his tailored navy suit. He watched me toss a handful of socks into the mesh compartment.

"I'm packing," I said, not looking up.

"You're walking away from a five-million-dollar restaurant because of a jacket?" He let out a dry, patronizing laugh. "Be rational, Elara. You step out that door, you are nothing. Nobody knows your name. They know Lumière."

"They know my food."

"Food doesn't own the trademark." He tapped his temple. "I do. You think you can just march out and start over? With what money? You drained your savings for the deposit."

I ignored him and moved toward the small oak desk in the corner. I needed my passport and the remaining cash I kept in the lockbox. I yanked the top drawer open. A stack of mail spilled over the edge, scattering across the hardwood floor.

A crisp, white bank statement landed face-up near my boot.

I crouched to grab it, my thumb brushing over the bolded black ink. The Chase Bank logo sat at the top. The date stamped across the header was exactly six months ago.

The transaction line glared up at me.

Transfer: $200,000.

Memo: Endorsement Payout.

Recipient: Brielle Montgomery.

My hands went entirely numb. I stood up, holding the paper out. "What is this?"

Julian's smug expression faltered for a fraction of a second before hardening into a mask of pure business. "Corporate expenses."

"This was the endorsement deal from the cast-iron cookware line," I said, my voice dropping dangerously low. "The brand that wanted my grandmother's recipes for their national campaign. You told me the deal fell through."

"They wanted a face to sell the pans, Elara. Not a grease-stained line cook." He pushed off the doorframe, taking a step toward me. "Brielle shot the promo videos. She did the brand integration. She earned the payout."

"Two hundred thousand dollars of my work, Julian!" I crushed the statement in my fist. "My family's recipes! You funded her entire influencer career with my sweat."

"I made a strategic investment," he countered smoothly. "And look where it got us. The critics from the Times are sitting downstairs right now waiting for her to present the main course. That two hundred grand bought us three million followers."

"You stole from me."

"I allocated funds," he corrected. "You really need to learn how the real world operates. The LLC received the money, and the LLC paid its marketing director. It's perfectly legal."

I didn't scream. The blinding rage that had been boiling in my chest suddenly crystallized into ice. I tossed the crumpled paper at his chest. It bounced off his lapel and hit the floor.

"You're right," I said. "It's a strategic investment. I hope she's worth every penny."

I grabbed the handle of my suitcase and dragged it out of the bedroom. The wheels clattered loudly against the hallway floorboards. Julian followed me into the open-plan kitchen, his leather shoes silent on the rug.

"You're making a massive mistake," he warned, though his tone was entirely bored. "You walk out, I replace you by tomorrow morning. I'll hire a dozen prep cooks to do your job."

"Good luck." I stopped at the marble kitchen island.

Earlier today, I had printed out the master prep sheet for the signature bone broth. The exact ratios of marrow, toasted star anise, and charred ginger. The secret to the entire menu. Julian had demanded a hard copy for the investors.

I pulled the folded document from my back pocket and slapped it flat onto the cool marble surface.

Julian's eyes darted to the paper. A triumphant smirk touched the corners of his mouth. "Leaving the holy grail behind? Very mature of you, Ellie. At least you understand who actually owns the intellectual property."

"Consider it my parting gift," I told him.

Let him have it. Let Brielle try to follow it. I had altered three key measurements on that printed page before the shift started. I swapped the toasted star anise for raw black cardamom and doubled the sodium ratio via a dark soy reduction. If they followed those exact instructions, the broth would turn bitter, cloudy, and entirely inedible within four hours. A perfect, unfixable disaster for the food critics.

I turned my back on him and headed for the front door.

"You'll be back!" Julian called out, his voice echoing through the empty apartment. "You have nowhere else to go! I'll give you until tomorrow's prep shift to apologize!"

"Don't hold your breath."

"If you don't show up tomorrow, I'll blacklist you in this city!" he shouted, finally losing his cool. "You won't even get a job flipping burgers!"

I gripped the brass doorknob, twisted it, and walked out into the crisp night air. The heavy metal door slammed shut behind me, cutting off his threats.

The alleyway behind the restaurant smelled of damp brick and stale exhaust fumes. Above me, the massive neon Lumière sign buzzed, casting a harsh pink glow over the wet pavement. Through the frosted glass of the back windows, I could hear the faint clatter of pans and the murmur of the dining room. My dining room.

I didn't look back. I pulled my phone from my jacket pocket.

My thumb hovered over the contacts list. I scrolled past the local meat suppliers, past the equipment repairmen, until I reached a name I had saved two years ago. A hidden, international number I had sworn I would never need.

A man who had tasted my food in a tiny pop-up tent in Paris and offered me the world. I had turned him down for Julian.

I pressed dial.

The line rang twice. The transatlantic connection crackled in my ear.

"Oui?" a deep, gravelly voice answered.

I stared up at the buzzing neon sign of the empire I had built and lost in a single night.

"Chef Henri," I said, my grip tightening on the phone. "I accept your invitation."
