Chapter 3

Family?

How did I still have any family?

My family died the night he went to accompany Cherry. I had become an orphan!

I spat at him contemptuously and glared at him with a vengeful look. "How do you have the nerve to talk about my parents? They have been killed by you!"

Aiden thought I was still angry and saying harsh words to scare him.

He sneered, "What about our daughter, Ella? Can you really abandon her? Apologize to Cherry now, or I will stop Ella's specialist consultation!"

I suddenly looked up and stared at the man with a malevolent expression, unable to believe that this was what Ella's biological father could say!

Even a tiger wouldn't eat its cubs, let alone a human being!

"She's also your daughter!"

Cherry sneered, and her words plunged me into despair instantly.

Aiden had said earlier that except for the child I gave birth to, all the others were illegitimate offspring!

I couldn't believe it and looked at Aiden in disbelief. He nervously averted his eyes, and his trembling hands exposed his anxious heart.

"Is that what you said?"

Aiden's face turned pale, mumbled in explanation, "It's not like that..."

But he was defeated by Cherry's tearful eyes and changed the subject.

"Amber, it's not too late to apologize now. Ella is my biological daughter. How could I be so heartless? All I need is a simple apology, don't make me difficult."

I couldn't apologize.

I had embarrassed him in front of others again and again. Aiden's face looked a bit unpleasant and became colder.

"Apologize to Cherry!"

"No!"

Seeing that I was still unrepentant, Aiden lost his patience completely. He signaled to the security guard to release me, and then kicked my kneecap with his foot, making me kneel down on the ground.

I had a feeling that something bad was about to happen, and I desperately struggled.

"Amber! You can't treat me like this. You killed my family, dug up their graves, and now you want me to apologize to the murderer! Are you still human?"

Aiden's eyes flashed with reluctance, but the security guard took advantage of the situation and forced me to bow my head against Cherry.

Cherry laughed hysterically.

My heart, however, died completely.

After the security guard let go, I sat on the ground silently crying, then stood up resolutely and turned away without a word.

Aiden seemed to feel that if he let me go today, he would lose me forever, so he panicked and rushed forward to grab me, but before he could explain, he saw the hatred in my eyes and swallowed his words.

We stood there in standoff until the phone rang.

Aiden let out a sigh of relief. He seemed to have found an outlet, answering the phone impatiently.

The assistant cautiously spoke.

"Mr. Martin, Mrs. Martin's family members have contracted HIV and have died of complications... while you were accompanying Ms. Miller."

Aiden was shocked and looked at me in disbelief, unable to speak.

"Didn't I tell you to send the medicine?"

The assistant had never seen Aiden behave so out of control, but he still bravely spoke hesitantly.

"Mr. Martin, you and Ms. Miller had a disagreement and ordered me to destroy the medicine... I did remind you later, but you were accompanying Ms. Miller and told me not to bother you."

At that time, I was so busy dealing with my family's affairs that I asked Aiden to send Ella to the SAT site, but he abandoned her on the highway because of Cherry's return.

I lost my temper and cursed him out, driving Ella to the examination site, but I never expected Aiden to hold a grudge against me for this and destroy the medicine that was meant for my family!

Later, my daughter was taken for a checkup, and was also diagnosed with HIV.

Aiden hung up the phone. He was too ashamed to look at me and stammered, "Amber, I... I really didn't know."

I ignored him and silently picked up the ashes from the ground and held them in my arms again.

Aiden knelt down to help, but I pushed him away with a look of disgust and red eyes.

"Get away! Don't touch them with your dirty hands!"

He awkwardly withdrew his hand and hastily added, "Amber, I'll buy them the best gravesite and choose a day for a new burial... Don't look at me like that."

Cherry saw him apologizing submissively, feeling heartbroken. She forcibly pulled Aiden up and stood behind him to protect him.

"Aiden, this was never your fault! No one would believe it if we said our whole family got infected with HIV. Maybe it's her family's promiscuity that led to this disease!

"Besides, she didn't even explain clearly when she came. Who could have thought it was such a coincidence that we happened to dig up her family's grave..."

Aiden saw that I was so angry that my eyes turned red, afraid that she would say something rebellious and disrespectful, so he slapped her first!

"You hit me!"

Aiden calmed down and regretted looking at his hand, feeling frustrated.

Cherry was so angry that she stomped her foot and left.

Aiden wanted to chase after her but hesitated for a moment, lowering his head and not daring to look at me.

"Amber, I'll give you an explanation."

He said this and left without looking back.

I laughed wryly. I had known that I was just a substitute for Cherry, but I had a moment of hope that he would stop.

What a cheap person I was.

I buried the ashes back in the original place and left dejectedly, but I saw a group of policemen surrounding them at the foot of the mountain.
