The huge inheritance of my third uncle
Chapter 3
Thankfully, I made something of myself and got into college.
That day was the happiest of my life.
Yet Caleb told me to give up the opportunity, claiming he couldn't afford to send both his son and me to college.
He said he had found a job for me and that it was time for me to start earning to pay him back for his support over the years.
By the time I was about to enter college, I was old enough to make my own decisions.
Caleb's household was originally very poor, and he was lazy and unambitious, which was probably why his wife left him.
But somehow, after taking me in, Caleb made a fortune, buying many properties and renting out shops.
Financially, he could easily afford to send both Isaac and me to college.
I wasn't ready to give up.
I called Aaron and Brad and poured out my troubles.
Aaron was furious, saying that it was rare for the Moore family to have a college student, and I must attend!
Later, Aaron and Brad came to talk to Caleb, and whatever was said, Caleb agreed to let me go to college.
He said he would pay for my tuition, but I had to find a way to cover my living expenses.
I gratefully accepted, knowing that Caleb wasn't my biological father and he had no obligation to me. It had nothing to do with how much money he had.
He promised to pay for my college education, and that was all I could ask for.
I cherished this hard-won opportunity, working part-time to earn my living expenses while studying.
In my second year of college, Caleb suffered a stroke that paralyzed his lower body and needed care, just as I received the chance to study abroad.
At that moment, Isaac didn't think of taking care of Caleb but instead pleaded with him, saying his tutor had told him that if I willingly gave up my spot, it could be transferred to him.
Caleb approached me, hoping I would relinquish my spot.
I didn't want to give up this life-changing opportunity.
Caleb, however, asked me if I knew how much it cost to study abroad and where the money he could acquire to support me.
He tried to coax and scare me and then played on my emotions, saying that if I gave up the spot and stayed to care for him, he would leave me all his estate.
As for his son, securing this opportunity abroad was the greatest legacy he could fight for, and his future would depend on his own abilities.
He said all this in front of both Isaac and me.
Isaac immediately nodded in agreement and knelt before me, begging me, saying he had been terrible before, but it was all due to youthful ignorance. He hoped I would not hold onto the past, considering the many years Caleb had taken care of me. He promised that if I gave up my spot and looked after his father until his old age, he would never contest the estate.
I thought, "When you're under someone's roof, you have to give in."
I thought it over all night.
I wanted to go abroad, but the first problem was that I had no money.
Just that made it very difficult.
Moreover, even if I studied abroad, wasn't the ultimate goal to make money?
Caleb owned several properties and shops that he rented out.
Inheriting this wealth would be enough to support me for the rest of my life.
Even just considering the kindness Caleb showed raising me, I should repay him.
I voluntarily gave up my spot. I didn't know how the tutor managed to secure it for Isaac.
All I knew was that Caleb once gave Isaac a thick stack of money, supposedly for the tutor.
Where there were interests, there was money changing hands.
Whether it was tutors or executives...
I thought, "A person will die for money. A bird will die for food."
My life experiences made this very clear to me. I understood it all too well.
Then, there were the twenty years of my youth that I devoted to Caleb.
I foolishly took care of him.
I had my own motives. I wanted the estate.
But I also remembered his kindness in raising me.
What I didn't expect was to be played by him and his son like this.
In their eyes, I was just a fool!
I was just a tool to be kicked away once used!
I was hit by a car and sent flying far, far away.
Strangely, I felt no pain.
When I opened my eyes again...
I was looking at my college dormitory, asking my roommate for the time, only to realize I had returned to twenty years ago.
The moment before, Caleb was about to have a stroke!
