Chapter 4

I pulled my finger away from the gold-foiled date on the invitation.

"Cancel my afternoon meetings," I told Theresa, grabbing my coat from the velvet sofa.

"Where are you going?" she asked, looking up from the encrypted server logs.

"To pay my respects."

Forty minutes later, my shoes crushed the loose gravel of Oak Ridge Memorial Park. I bypassed the ornate mausoleums and headed straight for Plot 402. The Crane family monument loomed under the harsh afternoon sun, a massive block of imported dark granite.

I stopped at the edge of the manicured grass.

My name was gone.

A rough, pale scar marred the polished stone. They hadn't just removed the letters. They used a grinder to violently gouge my existence out of the rock.

Beside it sat a brand-new slab. The surface gleamed, displaying the Crane family crest. Beneath the bird emblem, pristine silver letters spelled out a new future: Sabrina Crane.

"You couldn't even wait for the dirt to settle," I murmured to the empty air.

I dropped to a crouch, ignoring the damp soil seeping into my trousers. Fine stone dust still clung to the edges of the violent scrape. I pressed my thumb into the groove, wiping away the gritty white powder. It coated my skin like chalk.

I felt no urge to weep. I had already spent my grief on the nineteen years I wasted playing the devoted wife.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my grandmother Eleanor’s ring. The heavy platinum caught the sunlight, flashing brilliantly against the grim backdrop of the cemetery. I tilted the band, revealing the intricate Hale crest engraved inside. A shield flanked by twin oaks.

Real history. Real power. Not a cheap silver-plated replica bought with stolen money.

My phone vibrated in my coat pocket. I answered it without looking at the screen.

"Did you find the plot?" Theresa asked, her voice tight over the speaker.

"I found Sabrina's future resting place," I replied, standing up and dusting the white powder from my thumb. "She already claimed her spot next to Gerald. The engraver didn't even bother to sweep up the mess."

"I have worse news." Theresa paused, the rapid clacking of a keyboard echoing through the line. "Russell Vane is making his move."

"Tell me."

"He’s bypassing the institutional investors. His shell companies are quietly absorbing retail Crane shares. Thousands of them every hour."

I paced the length of the desecrated monument, my shadow falling over Sabrina's shiny new plaque. "He wants voting power. How much does he have?"

"Fourteen percent, and climbing," Theresa reported. "I intercepted an internal memo from Gerald's office. They plan to announce a massive family business restructuring next Friday."

"At the engagement party."

"Exactly. Gerald intends to stand on the top floor of the Crane Building, raise a glass to his new bride, and hand Vane the keys to the kingdom."

My grip tightened on the phone. "Gerald thinks he is securing his legacy. He doesn't realize Vane is locking the cage."

"Vane is using the retail shares to bypass the regulatory triggers," Theresa explained. "He’s buying just under the threshold that requires public disclosure. By the time Gerald announces the restructuring, Vane will have the majority needed to liquidate the assets and sell them off for parts."

"Gerald is handing him the knife," I said.

"And Sabrina gets to play the dutiful wife while the company bleeds."

"Let them play," I instructed, my tone dropping to a dead calm. "Call the Hale Trust legal team."

"What do you need them to do?"

"Tell them to prep every single senior debt document. All thirty-eight notes."

"For next Friday?"

"Yes. Have them bundle the paperwork into a single portfolio." I slipped the platinum ring back onto my finger. "I am going to crash the engagement party and personally deliver a wedding gift."

Theresa let out a sharp laugh. "Gerald will choke on his toast."

"He will choke on his debt," I corrected. "Have the car waiting at the south gate."

"Understood. Watch your back out there."

I ended the call and slipped the phone into my pocket. The wind picked up, rustling the leaves of the nearby elm trees and scattering the remaining stone dust from my ruined grave.

I turned away from the scarred granite, ready to walk back down the path.

A figure stood ten feet away, blocking the walkway.

I froze.

Daniel.

He wore his dark letterman jacket, the one I used to dry-clean every Tuesday. In his hands, he clutched a large bouquet of white chrysanthemums. My favorite flowers. The ones he always complained smelled too bitter.

For a split second, neither of us moved. The cemetery went entirely silent.

His eyes locked onto my face. His jaw dropped. The healthy flush drained from his cheeks until he looked paler than the marble statues lining the gravesites. He blinked rapidly, as if trying to clear a hallucination.

I kept my expression completely blank, though my pulse hammered against my ribs.

The plastic wrapping of the bouquet crinkled loudly in the quiet air as his fingers went slack.

The white chrysanthemums hit the dirt with a soft thud, scattering petals across the gravel.

"You..." Daniel stammered, taking a shaky half-step forward. "You look just like..."
