Chapter 2

"…move all thirty-eight of Crane's senior debt notes into the collection preparation process today."

I finished the sentence while keeping my gaze locked on the passing traffic.

Theresa let out a low whistle from the driver's seat. "Calling in the entire board's debt. Gerald will bleed out by Friday."

"Let him bleed."

Theresa reached into her leather tote sitting on the center console and handed over a silver tablet. "You wanted to see the final cut of your farewell tour. The private investigator sent the footage this morning."

I took the device. The screen felt cold against my palms.

I tapped the play icon. The fluorescent lights of the county morgue cast a harsh, sterile glow over the stainless-steel tables.

Gerald stood over the empty body bag we used for the staged identification.

He buried his face in his hands. His shoulders heaved up and down. A muffled sob echoed through the tablet’s small speakers.

"He looks devastated," Theresa noted, steering the sedan around a slow-moving delivery truck.

"Watch the timestamp," I told her.

The numbers in the bottom corner of the video ticked upward. At exactly three minutes and zero seconds, Gerald dropped his hands.

His face was completely dry.

He checked his gold Rolex, adjusted his silk tie, and walked out of the room without a single backward glance.

"Three minutes," I said, pausing the video on his retreating back. "The precise amount of time required to satisfy the hospital staff waiting outside the door."

"He always was efficient," Theresa muttered.

I swiped left on the screen. A screenshot of Daniel’s social media feed appeared.

A black-and-white photo of me filled the center of the display. The caption read: Gone too soon. Miss you, Mother.

Directly beneath it sat the top-liked comment.

I will take good care of this family.

Sabrina’s profile picture smiled next to the words. The same bright, practiced smile she flashed at my son on the front porch an hour ago.

"She didn't waste a second," Theresa said, glancing at the tablet.

"Neither did my son."

I stared at the thousands of likes validating her performance. My chest tightened, a dull ache radiating outward. Nineteen years of raising him, wiped away by a single comment from the woman sleeping in my bed.

I closed the photo and opened the financial logs Theresa had compiled.

Line after line of green text scrolled past.

"Look at this," I instructed, holding the tablet up so Theresa could see the screen. "Twenty million dollars."

"Daniel’s trust disbursement," Theresa said.

"Paid out in monthly installments over the last year," I added, tapping the final total at the bottom of the page. "Every single dollar came from the Hale Trust. My family's money."

"And Daniel thinks Gerald built this wealth from the ground up."

"He thinks his father is a titan of industry," I said, my voice dropping. "He drives a sports car I paid for, wearing designer clothes I bought, praising a man who couldn't afford the gas in the tank without my bridge loans."

Theresa gripped the steering wheel tighter. "That boy is blind."

"He was bought," I corrected. "Sabrina gives him the freedom I never allowed, and Gerald gives him the money I secretly provided. They bought my son's loyalty with my own checkbook."

I pressed my thumb against the edge of the tablet screen. The glass dug into my skin.

"Two years ago," I said, the memory forcing its way out of my throat. "Sabrina scrubbed the foyer floors on her hands and knees."

"You set the bait early."

"I handed her the replica ring and the brass key to my jewelry box," I continued, staring at the blank space beside the financial logs. "She dropped her head. She actually cried tears of gratitude."

"What did she say?"

"'Madam treats me like family.'" I repeated her exact words, the fake humility still ringing in my ears. "'I guard your things as if they were my own.'"

"She certainly made herself at home."

"I gave her a test," I said, shutting off the tablet screen. "She failed."

Theresa hit the turn signal, merging onto the highway. The engine roared as we picked up speed.

"Do we expose them now?" Theresa asked, her tone sharpening with anticipation. "I can send the morgue footage to the board of directors. We can freeze Daniel's trust accounts by noon. Gerald won't know what hit him."

I shook my head.

"Vivian, they erased you. They replaced you in a week."

"I know."

"Then why are we waiting?" Theresa demanded. "You have the proof. You have the leverage."

I turned to face her. "I am not playing this game for a woman wearing a fake ring."

Theresa kept her eyes on the road, but her jaw clenched. "Explain it to me."

"Sabrina is a pawn," I said, laying the tablet flat on my lap. "Gerald is a fool. Neither of them has the intelligence to orchestrate the massive short-selling of Crane Industries that happened right before my accident."

"You think someone else backed them."

"I know someone else backed them," I corrected. "Someone fed Gerald the confidence to push me out. Someone promised Sabrina she would inherit the empire."

"You want the puppet master."

"I want the entire board," I stated, my voice completely flat. "If I strike now, I only ruin a cheating husband and a greedy maid. The person who really tried to swallow my company at a discount walks away clean."

Theresa exhaled a long breath. "You really are terrifying."

"I am protecting what belongs to me."

"So we wait."

"We pull the debt notes," I instructed. "We squeeze Gerald's cash flow. We make him desperate. Desperate men always call their handlers."

A sharp chime interrupted the quiet hum of the car interior.

A notification banner slid across the top of the dark tablet screen.

Theresa glanced down. "That’s the inbox for the private server I cloned last night."

I tapped the banner. The mail application opened, displaying a single unread message.

Sender: Russell Vane.

Subject: Proceed as planned.

I stared at the four words illuminating the screen.
