Chapter 3

The whisper hung in the heavy, freezing air, repeating the same desperate words over and over.

"Doctor... help me."

Rachel's breath caught in her throat.

Her pulse hammered wildly against her ribs, every instinct screaming at her to rush toward the sound. It was her mother's voice.

The exact same gentle pitch, the familiar cadence that had comforted her throughout her childhood.

'No,' Rachel thought, forcing herself to stay rooted to the cold tile. 'That's impossible. My mother isn't in this hospital. She's miles away, safe in her own home.'

A cold sweat broke out across her forehead. She reached out in the pitch blackness, grabbing the sleeves of Derek and the trembling nurse, pulling them both backward into the deeper shadows of the treatment room.

"Rachel?" Derek whispered, his breath hot against her ear. "What is it?"

"Don't move," she breathed softly. "Don't say a word."

With a loud, metallic buzz, the emergency lighting overhead flickered back to life. The harsh, dim red glow flooded the corridor, cutting through the heavy darkness.

Rachel gasped.

Standing directly in the open doorway of the treatment room was one of the infected patients.

It was a tall man wearing torn hospital scrubs. His skin was a dull, bruised grey, and his eyes were completely swallowed by huge, pitch-black pupils. But his mouth wasn't open in a roar or a snarl.

His throat twitched violently, his vocal cords vibrating in a bizarre, artificial rhythm.

"Doctor... help me," the creature whispered again. The sound came directly from his grey, decaying lips, completely mismatched with his hollow, lifeless expression.

'It was mimicking her,' Rachel realized with a shudder of pure horror. 'It knows what we sound like. It was trying to bait us out into the dark.'

The creature's black eyes snapped toward Rachel.

It lunged forward with blinding speed, its long, pale fingers reaching out like claws.

"Look out!" Derek shouted.

Rachel didn't freeze. She swung the heavy metal stand she was holding with all the strength in her body.

The thick steel rod slammed directly into the side of the creature's head with a sickening crack.

The infected man stumbled sideways, crashing into a row of glass medicine cabinets.

Shattered glass rained down onto the floor. Before the creature could recover, Derek rushed forward with a heavy fire extinguisher, slamming the thick base down onto the back of its neck.

The creature thrashed wildly on the floor, its unnatural joints snapping as it fought to stand back up.

Rachel stepped in and smashed the metal stand down again and again until the creature finally went completely still, its dark, unnatural blood pooling over the broken glass.

Rachel stood over the body, her chest heaving as she sucked in sharp, ragged gasps of air.

Her arms trembled from the effort.

'They aren't just sick,' she thought, wiping a smear of dark liquid from her cheek. 'They're adapting. They're using our own memories and emotions against us.'

"We can't stay in the open," Rachel said, her voice shaking slightly before she forced it into a firm, steady tone. "If there are more of them hunting in the dark, we need a secure location right now."

Together with Derek, she led the terrified nurse back toward the main Emergency Department.

The lobby was still in utter panic, but Rachel quickly took charge. She called out to two surviving guards and a few doctors who were hiding behind the main reception desk.

"Listen to me!" Rachel announced, her voice echoing clearly over the cries of the injured.

"The main doors are locked, and the power is unstable. We need to fall back into the pediatric ward. The doors are heavy, reinforced steel, and there's only one main entry point!"

The crowd of frightened civilians and medical staff listened. Under Rachel's direction, they began moving the injured into the secure room.

Derek worked tirelessly beside her, pushing heavy supply carts across the hallway and helping drag wooden benches to barricade the surrounding doors.

He wiped his sweaty brow and looked at Rachel with a warm, supportive smile. "You're doing great, Rachel. Seriously. You're keeping everyone alive."

Rachel felt a deep wave of relief wash over her. In the middle of this nightmare, having someone she trusted by her side made the overwhelming fear bearable.

'I couldn't do this alone,' she thought, giving him a small, grateful nod. 'Thank God Derek is here.'

Once the last of the civilians were safely inside the reinforced ward, Derek gently pulled Rachel by her elbow, leading her toward a quiet corner near the back hallway.

He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a barely audible whisper. "Rachel, listen to me. I didn't want to say anything in front of the crowd because people would have panicked and stampeded."

Rachel frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"There's a service exit near the pharmacy,"

Derek whispered, his eyes darting cautiously around the empty corridor. "It's an old utility door used for drug deliveries. It runs on a separate manual hydraulic lock, not the main digital grid. I checked it earlier, it isn't locked by the automated quarantine system. We can get out."

Rachel's eyes widened in surprise. "A way out? Derek, if that door works, we can bring everyone! We can evacuate the whole ward!"

"No, we can't rush in there with thirty screaming people," Derek urged quietly, grabbing her wrist. "If the monsters hear us, we'll all get trapped in the narrow utility hallway. You and I need to check the exit first. If the path is clear, we come back and lead the others out in small groups. Deal?"

Rachel hesitated for a brief second. It made sense. Moving a massive, noisy crowd through an unchecked corridor could trigger another slaughter.

"Okay," Rachel agreed, nodding firmly. "Let's check it out. Fast."

They slipped away from the barricaded ward, navigating the darkened service halls that led toward the hospital pharmacy.

The air grew colder and smelled heavily of damp dust and chemical cleaners. The distant pounding of rain against the outer walls sounded faint here, buried deep within the building's infrastructure.

They reached a long, narrow hallway lined with heavy storage rooms. At the far end stood the glowing green sign of the hospital pharmacy.

"It's just through here," Derek said, pointing toward a heavy, reinforced steel door. "The service exit connects through the back of this storage room. Step inside and hold the door for a second while I check the light switch."

Rachel didn't suspect a thing. She pushed the heavy metal door open and stepped into the dark, windowless room.

A loud bang shattered the silence.

Before she could even take a second step, the door was slammed shut behind her with violent force.

Rachel spun around, her heart jumping into her throat. "Derek?"

A sharp, metallic latch clicked heavily into place from the outside.

Rachel grabbed the metal handle and yanked on it with all her strength. It didn't budge. The heavy door was locked tight.

"Derek! What are you doing?!" Rachel yelled, her voice filled with sudden panic. She raised her hands and slammed them against the small, wire-reinforced glass window set into the top of the door.

Through the thick glass, she saw Derek standing in the hallway.

He wasn't alone.

Standing right beside him was Mira, another doctor from the surgical department. Mira held a large ring of master keys in one hand and a heavy duffel bag packed with stolen medical supplies over her shoulder.

Rachel stared at them in absolute disbelief, her mind struggling to process what she was seeing.

'Mira? What is going on?'

"Derek! Open the door!" Rachel begged, her palms smearing against the glass. "Why are you doing this?!"

Mira didn't even look Rachel in the eye. She adjusted the heavy bag on her shoulder and checked her watch nervously. "We need to go, Derek. The creatures are moving down from the upper floors. We don't have time."

Derek looked through the glass at Rachel. His face showed no anger, only a cold, calculated detachment that made Rachel's blood run cold.

"I'm sorry, Rachel," Derek said, his voice muffled by the thick steel door. "I've been working with Mira since the outbreak started. She has access to a group that secured the main supply vaults on the lower level."

"Then let me help you!" Rachel cried out, her voice cracking. "Why lock me in here?!"

"Because you're too good, Rachel," Derek replied plainly. "You want to save everyone. You want to hand out medicine and waste time organizing crowds. Mira's group only has enough supplies for six people. If you come with us, you'll just drag us down trying to play the hero."

"Derek, please!" Rachel pleaded, tears of utter betrayal burning in her eyes. "We're friends! We worked together!"

Derek stepped back from the door, gripping his own backpack tightly.

"I'm sorry, Rachel. Survival isn't about being loyal."

He turned on his heel. Mira followed right beside him, and together, they vanished into the darkness down the pharmacy hall, their hurried footsteps echoing away until there was total silence.

"Derek! DEREK!" Rachel screamed, pounding her fists against the solid steel until her knuckles throbbed with agony.

Silence answered her.

She was completely trapped. The storage room was pitch black, cramped, and smelled of stale cardboard and rubbing alcohol.

Rachel backed away from the door, her breathing shallow and fast as anger and terror warred inside her chest. 'He lied to me. The whole time... he was just using me.'

Then, a strange sound echoed from the corridor outside her locked room.

Slow, heavy footsteps were approaching down the service hallway. Multiple sets of feet.

A low, wet raspy gurgle rattled through the air outside the door, followed by the heavy, metallic smell of fresh blood wafting through the tiny gap under the frame.

Rachel held her breath, backing up until her spine hit the back wall of the storage room.

The footsteps stopped right outside the door.

Silence hung in the air for a terrible, agonizing second.

Then, a long, horrible sound vibrated through the metal door.

Sharp, hardened fingernails began clawing wildly at the steel surface on the other side of the door, trying to get in.
