The Girl He Threw Away Ended Up With His Best Friend Novel Cover

The Girl He Threw Away Ended Up With His Best Friend

I spent two years as Kai Mercer's secret lover, convinced his arranged engagement was just a business move. Then, at his lavish gala-wedding, he publicly cast me aside, trading our bond for his billion-dollar legacy. With his father now pursuing me, I turned to Rhys—Kai's closest confidant—where shelter unexpectedly grew into genuine, unguarded affection. When Kai learned the truth, he annulled his sham marriage, forfeited his fortune, and begged for my return. His desperate redemption came too late. I now belong to the man who mended what Kai shattered.

Chapter 3

"Did you throw the phone away?"

Rhys leaned against the kitchen counter of the safe house, his sleeves rolled to his elbows. Steam rose from a mug between his palms.

"I snapped the SIM card and dropped the casing into a storm drain three miles back," I said.

"And the jewelry he gave you?"

"Sitting in a trash can behind a diner off Route 9." I pulled off my coat and threw it onto the sofa. "The diamond pendant, the watch, the bracelet. All of it."

Rhys studied my face in the dim lamplight. "You didn't keep a single thing?"

"If I kept one piece, I’d still be in his pocket."

I walked over to the dining table, where a fresh lease agreement lay next to a set of brass keys. My new name was on the first line.

"The studio space is on the third floor of an old brick building near the docks," Rhys said. "Nobody from the Mercer circle shops down there. The landlord doesn't ask questions as long as the rent clears on the first."

"How much do I owe you for the deposit?"

"Nothing."

"Rhys, I'm not taking charity."

"It isn't charity," he answered, setting his mug down with a soft click. "It's an investment. You're the best restorer in the state. Marcus Mercer tried to crush your career so his son could marry into shipping routes. I'm just making sure talent doesn't get wasted."

I stared at the brass keys. A sharp, dry laugh escaped my chest.

"What?" he asked.

"Two hours ago, Kai told five hundred people I was a pathetic stray."

"Kai is a coward who chose his father's checkbook over a spine," Rhys said, his voice dropping into a quiet, firm register. "Forget him. Tomorrow morning, you start over."

"It won't be that simple."

"It is that simple," Rhys said, sliding the keys across the wood toward me. "Take the keys, Elowen. Build your own name. One they can't take away."

I reached out and curled my fingers around the cold brass.

The next morning, I cut off every lingering thread.

I closed my old bank accounts, transferred my remaining savings to a regional credit union, and wiped the cloud drive that held three years of photographs. The apartment I had rented near Kai’s district was emptied into a moving van before noon. By nightfall, Elowen Miller ceased to exist in any registry Marcus Mercer could reach.

Three months passed like water rushing over stones.

The dockside studio smelled of turpentine, linseed oil, and old wood. My hands stayed stained with pigments from dawn until dusk.

"You have a visitor," Rhys announced, stepping through the studio door one rainy Tuesday afternoon.

Behind him stood an older woman wrapped in a navy trench coat, her gaze sweeping over the gold-leaf frames lining the brick walls.

"Mrs. Gable," Rhys introduced, stepping aside. "This is Elowen. She's the one who restored the 17th-century Dutch maritime canvas for the historical society."

Mrs. Gable adjusted her glasses, peering at the canvas on my easel. "The historical society said the canvas was beyond repair after the water leak."

"The varnish was milky, but the oil layers beneath were intact," I said, setting down my palette knife. "It took four weeks of solvent baths, but the original pigment held."

Mrs. Gable smiled, a sharp, satisfied expression. "Rhys told me you were meticulous. I have three family portraits from the 1890s that need preservation before our estate auction. Can you handle the commission?"

"I can have the first assessment ready by Friday."

"Splendid." She handed me a heavy cream card. "Send the invoice directly to my office."

When the door clicked shut behind her, I turned to Rhys.

"How did you convince Clara Gable to drive all the way to the docks?" I asked.

"I didn't convince her," Rhys said, walking over to the workbench. "I showed her high-resolution scans of your restoration work. She made the decision herself."

"You put your neck on the line for me with her."

"My neck is fine."

He reached out, his thumb brushing against a smudge of titanium white on my cheekbone. The touch was steady, warm, and unapologetic.

I didn't pull away.

"You've been here every day, Rhys," I said softly.

"Do you want me to leave?"

"No," I answered honestly. "I just keep waiting for you to ask for something."

"I don't play leverage games, Elowen," he said, holding my gaze without blinking. "Kai hid you in the dark because he was terrified of his father. I'm not terrified of anyone. And I don't hide the people I care about."

"Rhys—"

"I know you're still putting the pieces back together," he interrupted, his fingers dropping from my cheek to wrap gently around my wrist. "I'm not asking you to forget what happened overnight. But I am asking you to come to dinner with me tonight. At an open table. By the front window."

A small, genuine smile touched my mouth. "By the front window?"

"Right on the street," he said. "In the daylight."

"Okay," I whispered. "Yes."

For the first time in two years, I walked into a crowded dining room through the front door, my hand resting comfortably in the crook of a man's arm, without looking over my shoulder for cameras.

***

Forty miles north, the private elevator chimed.

Kai Mercer stepped out into the grand penthouse foyer.

His tuxedo jacket was draped over one forearm, his bow tie undone, swinging loose around his unbuttoned collar. The heavy platinum wedding band on his left hand felt foreign and heavy, like an iron shackle.

The penthouse was completely dark.

"Elowen?" he called out, his voice echoing against the vaulted ceiling.

No answer came.

He tossed his keys onto the console table and walked into the living room, flipping on the recessed spotlights.

The space was immaculate. Too immaculate.

The velvet couch had no cushions indented. The coffee table had no sketchbooks strewn across the glass. The scent of her jasmine hand cream was entirely gone, replaced by the sterile smell of lemon polish.

"Elowen!"

Kai strode down the hallway toward the master suite, pushing the door open with a shove.

The bed was stripped bare. The ivory duvet had been folded and placed at the foot of the mattress.

He wrenched the walk-in closet open.

Her half of the wardrobe was empty. The velvet hangers hung bare and motionless on the brass rods. Not a shoe, not a scarf, not a single coat remained.

He rushed into the master bathroom, ripping open the medicine cabinet.

His shaving cream and cologne sat alone on the glass shelf. Her face oils, her clips, her toothbrush—gone.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out with shaking fingers, hitting the speaker icon without checking the caller ID.

"Did you find her?" Kai demanded, his voice breaking on the last syllable.

"Mr. Mercer?" His private investigator's voice crackled through the speaker. "We pulled the records on her gallery lease as you requested."

"And?"

"The lease was formally terminated three months ago," the investigator said. "The museum canceled her contracts the morning after your wedding, exactly as your father arranged."

"Where did she relocate?" Kai shouted. "She has to be operating somewhere in the city! Check the supply vendors! Check the art logistics companies!"

"We checked every commercial registry in the state, sir," the man answered flatly. "Her bank accounts were closed within twenty-four hours of the reception. Her cell phone number was permanently disconnected. Her vehicle was sold to a private dealership for cash."

Kai gripped the edge of the marble sink, his knuckles turning white. "What about the trust fund I set up for her? The settlement money?"

"Untouched."

The silence in the bathroom turned deafening.

"What do you mean, untouched?" Kai whispered.

"She never accessed the account, Mr. Mercer. Five hundred thousand dollars is sitting in the escrow reserve. She didn't take a single cent."

Kai's chest tightened, a violent spasm constricting his lungs.

"She walked away with nothing?"

"She took her clothes and her restoration tools," the investigator said. "Beyond that, she completely vanished. There is no digital footprint, no forwarding address, and no credit activity under her social security number. It's like she never existed."

"Keep looking," Kai rasped, his voice dropping into a frantic, ragged plea. "Hire more men. Run facial recognition on the regional transit hubs. She couldn't have pulled this off alone. Someone helped her."

"Mr. Mercer, your father's legal team has already warned us not to—"

"I don't care about my father!" Kai roared into the phone, slamming his fist onto the marble counter until the glass perfume bottles rattled. "Find her! Do you hear me? Find her!"

He ended the call, his chest heaving as he stared into the mirror.

His reflection looked hollowed out, eyes bloodshot and wild.

He walked back into the living room and slumped onto the edge of the sofa, clutching his head in his hands.

She wasn't hiding in anger. She wasn't waiting for him to call with an apology.

She had excised him completely.

Then, his gaze caught something on the dark glass of the coffee table.

Kai leaned forward, his heart pounding against his ribs.

Underneath the corner of a brass coaster lay a tiny, folded square of paper.

He snatched it, tearing the fold open with trembling hands.

Written in her precise, elegant hand was a single line, accompanied by a date from three days ago:

*You traded me for a kingdom, Kai. Now sit on your empty throne.*
