Chapter 4

“Camila, don’t you dare forget.”

Kane's voice replayed in my mind as I shoved clothes into the small suitcase. Each word he had hissed the night before carried venom, but tonight, they were my fuel.

The zipper caught, but I tugged it harder, silencing the faint noise that seemed deafening in the quiet. The grand apartment around me was no longer home—it was a gilded prison.

Moonlight spilled through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting silver streaks over the polished wooden floor. My gaze flickered to the door. I had rehearsed this a hundred times in my head: no hesitation, no second-guessing.

“It’s now or never, Camila, I whispered to myself.”

The apartment was silent except for the hum of the refrigerator, a sound I’d never noticed until now. My fingers tightened around the suitcase handle, heart pounding as I reached for the doorknob.

Core Struggle: Facing Kane’s Threats and Embracing Uncertainty

Outside, the city pulsed with life. Cars sped past, their headlights streaking through the darkness, oblivious to the woman clutching a suitcase like a lifeline. Each step away from the building felt both liberating and treacherous, as if I were walking a tightrope without a net.

“Camila!”

The voice startled me, but relief washed over when I turned to see Merryl’s familiar figure. She leaned against her red Mini Cooper, arms crossed, her sharp eyes scanning me from head to toe.

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“Feels like I am one”, I said, attempting a weak smile.

She stepped forward, pulling me into a tight hug. Her embrace was warm, grounding, a reminder that I wasn’t entirely alone in this.

“Let’s get you out of here.”

Her voice was resolute, no room for questions. I nodded, slipping into the passenger seat.

The vibration in my pocket jolted me. As Merryl weaved through the traffic, I pulled out my phone. The screen lit up with Kane’s name.

[You can run, Camila, but you can’t hide.]

My breath caught. The air in the car felt heavier.

“What is it?”

“Kane. He knows.”

Merryl’s hands tightened around the wheel, her knuckles whitening.

Of course, he does. Men like him always do. But he won’t control you anymore.

I wanted to believe her. I wanted to believe that leaving Kane would strip him of his power, that distance would weaken his grip. But deep down, I knew better.

By the time we reached her apartment, my phone had buzzed ten more times. Each message alternated between threats and sweet promises.

[You think she cares? She’ll use you like everyone else.]

Merryl glanced at the screen, her face hardening.

“Block him.”

“He’ll find another way.”

My voice trembled despite my efforts to sound defiant.

“Then let him. But don’t let him win.”

Her words struck a chord. I had spent years bending to Kane’s will, suffocating under his shadow. Merryl’s confidence felt foreign, almost unattainable, yet intoxicating.

“I’ll try.”

My fingers hovered over the block button. Just as I pressed it, the final message came through.

“You’ll come back. You always do.”

“Never!”

The apartment was cozy, a stark contrast to Kane’s cold, modern penthouse. Merryl handed me a steaming mug of tea before settling on the couch beside me.

“So, what’s the plan?”

“Survive.”

She arched an eyebrow, unimpressed.

“That’s not a plan. That’s a reaction. You need strategy.”

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed again. I froze, realizing it wasn’t a call or message. It was an alert from Kane’s laptop, which I’d taken in my rush to leave.

Merryl leaned over, her eyes narrowing as I opened the email. The subject line read: "Secure Documents: For Kane’s Eyes Only."

“What is this?”

My voice was barely above a whisper.

“Open it.”

My fingers trembled as I clicked.
