Chapter 6

The Enemy's Shadow

The battlefield simmered with tension even after the last blow was struck. Wolves from both sides nursed wounds, growls lingering in the air like static. Lena shifted back into her human form, chest rising and falling, anger pulsing with every breath.

Kade's warriors formed a wary semi-circle behind him, while the rogues gathered close around Lena. No one seemed willing to look away from the treeline where Elias Voss had disappeared moments earlier after taunting them with the promise of more bloodshed.

Garrick wiped blood from his jaw and muttered, "That bastard was testing our defense. He wanted to see how fast we respond."

"Yes," Lena said sharply. "And he got exactly what he came for."

Kade glanced at her, but she didn't acknowledge him. Her eyes stayed on the dark path Elias had retreated into.

"We need to move," she announced. "This place is compromised. He knows our formation now."

Kade stepped forward. "We can regroup and fortify it."

"No," Lena countered. "We leave. Tonight."

Kade's brows pulled together. "You want to abandon the only ground we have? That is reckless."

Lena turned to him fully, her expression cold. "What is reckless is staying in a camp he can walk into whenever he wants."

"We can handle him," Kade said.

"Your warriors barely handled the rogues he sent," she shot back. "And these were not his elite fighters."

Murmurs rippled among the wolves. Garrick nodded in agreement.

Kade's jaw tensed. "Lena, we cannot move an entire camp in the middle of the night. We have injured wolves."

"Then we carry them."

"You are not the only one responsible for these wolves."

Lena leaned closer, lowering her voice so only he could hear the next part. "You asked for my help. So let me lead where I have the experience."

He searched her eyes for a long moment, but she didn't look away.

Finally Kade exhaled. "Fine. Tell us where we are going then."

Lena straightened. "The cliffs."

Garrick blinked. "The cliffs?"

She nodded. "There is a passage below it. Former rogues used it as a shelter. It is narrow which prevents mass attacks, and it keeps the pack contained behind a single entrance. We can defend that."

Kade rubbed a hand down his face. "A cave... this is not exactly the strategy of an Alpha leading thousands."

"It is the strategy of someone who understands ambushes," Lena snapped. "Elias cannot use his numbers against us if he cannot pour them through."

Kade paused as the logic settled in. He turned to his warriors. "Prepare the wounded. Pack whatever we can carry."

The warriors scattered at once.

Lena walked toward her group of rogues, and they straightened as she approached.

"We need to be faster than them," she told them plainly. "If Elias sends another force, we may not have the strength to hold them off."

A man from her group, Tobias, stepped forward. "We follow your lead. Whatever you decide."

Lena gave a tight nod. "Good."

As they set the camp into motion, Kade approached Lena again. He seemed hesitant which was unusual for him.

"You fought well," he said quietly.

She didn't even look at him. "It is what I have always done."

"That is not what I meant."

"I know what you meant," she replied evenly. "Save it."

Kade inhaled deeply. "Lena... you may not believe me but I am trying."

"You rejected me," she said flatly. "I am not required to applaud your attempt at redemption."

He winced. "I deserve that."

She finally met his eyes. "You deserve more than that."

Before he could respond, a piercing howl echoed from the forest. All wolves went silent immediately.

Garrick rushed to Lena's side. "Scouts from the western perimeter," he said.

Kade turned, instantly alert. "Trouble?"

A second howl came, sharper and filled with panic.

"Yes," Garrick replied.

Lena didn't wait. She shifted instantly, her wolf racing toward the sound with speed that surprised even her. Determination fueled her steps. Behind her, she heard multiple wolves following, including Kade.

Branches snapped under her paws as she ran. The moon glowed overhead like a vigilant witness. The forest grew darker, thicker, and she realized the scouts were deeper in than usual.

A faint growl reached her ears. Then another. The sound of struggle.

She burst through the underbrush and saw one of her scouts pinned beneath a massive rogue wolf. Two more roamed around them, pacing in tight circles.

Lena charged, slamming into the first rogue with a force that sent him sprawling. The second lunged at her but she twisted, catching him with her jaws. The taste of blood filled her mouth.

Suddenly Kade's black wolf appeared beside her, taking down the third attacker with brutal precision.

When the last rogue fell, the injured scout attempted to stand. Lena shifted back into human form and rushed to him.

"What happened?" she asked.

The scout clutched his side. "We saw movement... three rogues... then something else... something big. It passed between the trees."

"Elias?" Kade asked.

The scout shook his head. "No... different. Taller. I couldn't see clearly but... it wasn't a wolf."

Lena and Kade stared at each other.

Then Garrick ran up to them, panting. "You need to see this."

They followed him, weaving through the trees until they reached a clearing. There, carved into a massive boulder, was a symbol. Freshly engraved. The rocks still crumbled from the force of the carving.

It was a crescent moon split down the center by a jagged line.

Kade frowned. "That looks like..."

Lena finished for him. "The mark of the Forsaken. Elias's first pack."

Garrick tilted his head. "I thought that pack disappeared years ago."

"So did everyone," Lena replied. "But this symbol means only one thing. Elias is resurrecting it."

Kade turned to her slowly. "Then we are not dealing with only rogues."

"No," she said. "Elias is building something much larger."

Before they could react, a sharp whistle cut through the air. Lena looked at the direction it came from.

"Tobias," she muttered. "That is his signal."

They ran back toward the camp. Lena's anxiety spiked with every step. The closer they got, the more uneasy she felt. The trees thinned and the clearing opened before them.

But the sight that greeted them made Lena stop cold.

The camp was chaos again.

Wolves were running. Fires burned in patches. Supplies scattered across the clearing as if a whirlwind had torn through.

And in the center, surrounded by her rogues, stood a man.

Tall. Cloaked. Smiling.

Elias.

He stood alone, arms raised slightly as if welcoming them.

"Hello, Lena," he called out. "I was beginning to think you would never return."

Kade bristled beside her and growled, "Get away from my warriors."

Elias looked amused. "Your warriors? Interesting claim. I recall some of them dying under your leadership in the last war."

Kade lunged forward but Lena grabbed his arm before he shifted.

"No," she whispered. "This is exactly what he wants."

Elias's smile widened. "Smart girl."

"Why are you here?" Lena demanded. "I thought you preferred to hide behind your army."

"Oh, Lena. I did not come to fight," he said with surprising calm. "I came to deliver a message."

Kade took a step forward. "Say it and get out."

Elias laughed softly. "Very well. The message is simple."

He pointed one finger directly at Lena.

"You are the reason I declared this war."

The world seemed to still.

"What?" Lena breathed.

"You," Elias repeated. "Your power. Your bloodline. Your connection to her."

Kade's eyes narrowed. "To who?"

Elias tilted his head.

"The Moon Goddess."

The air turned heavy. The wolves around them fell silent.

Lena felt her pulse stutter. "What are you talking about?"

Elias's smile vanished, replaced by something colder.

"You are the key to the greatest power our kind has ever known. And I intend to claim it."

Lena's stomach tightened. "Over my dead body."

Elias gave a small shrug. "That can be arranged."

Kade shifted closer to Lena, placing himself protectively between her and Elias. "You will not touch her."

Elias raised his hands in mock surrender. "Not yet."

Then his gaze slid toward the forest behind Lena.

"You might want to check on your missing wolves."

Lena froze. "What missing wolves?"

Elias stepped back. "The ones I borrowed."

"What did you do?" she demanded.

His eyes gleamed with triumph. "Go look."

Before anyone could reach him, Elias shifted into a massive shadowy wolf and vanished into the trees.

Kade growled and gave chase, but Lena grabbed him again. "No. We have to see what he meant."

Her rogues and Kade's warriors quickly counted their numbers.

Garrick's face went pale. "Lena... Sage is missing."

Lena's heart dropped. "My brother?"

Garrick nodded. "He was here. Now he's gone."

Kade spun towards Lena, eyes wide. "He took Sage."

Lena's breath caught in her chest.

And for the first time since she left her pack, true fear gripped her.

"We need to find him," she whispered.

Kade nodded. "We will."

Lena shook her head. "No. We will not."

Everyone stared at her.

She clenched her fists.

"I will."

The last thing she saw was a trail of blood leading into the dark forest.

The Moon Goddess's mark glowed faintly under the moonlight.

Something terrible was waiting at the end of that trail.

And Lena stepped forward.
