The Gift I Bought Him Had Another Woman’s Name Novel Cover

The Gift I Bought Him Had Another Woman’s Name

After months of saving, she bought her fiancé Dominic Bellandi a luxury gift, only to find another woman's initials engraved on it. He dismissed her concerns, but the ultimate betrayal came at their alliance ceremony. Before an elite crowd of mafia capos, Dominic toasted the wrong name. Instead of causing a scene, she calmly slipped off her loose betrothal ring, handed it to his true lover, and walked away. This quiet defiance marks both a stunning end and a dangerous new beginning.

Chapter 10

Once the household had gathered, we moved to the rear lawn for the vows. A modest arch of white hydrangeas had been erected beside the fountain, the only concession anyone had made to ceremony. The officiant, a Family-connected judge who had performed three Bellandi weddings before mine, stood with his leather folio and waited. Soldiers in dark suits lined the perimeter of the garden at ten-yard intervals, hands folded, earpieces glinting, their presence so routine that no one acknowledged them. The afternoon light fell flat and gray through a thin ceiling of cloud, and even the birds had gone quiet, as though the estate itself was holding its breath for something other than a marriage.

Dominic took the microphone from the officiant and stepped beneath the arch. He was supposed to speak his vows. Instead, in the half-second before his voice carried, a low whisper escaped him first, intimate and unguarded and amplified by the microphone he'd already raised to his lips.

"Serena."

Her name moved through the gathered crowd like smoke. His gaze had found her across the rows of seated Bellandis, and hers had found his, and for a suspended, brutal moment they were locked together with the gravity of people who had forgotten anyone else existed. The guests murmured. Chairs shifted. Someone coughed into the silence the way people cough when they are embarrassed for you. I could feel every eye in that garden calculating whether I would shatter, whether I would scream, whether I would give them the scene they were quietly hoping for so they could discuss it over dinner for the next decade.

I gave a small smile.

Then I interrupted Dominic before he could continue.

My thumb found the inside of my ring finger, pressing once against the thin band of metal that had lived there for longer than it should have. Then, slowly, deliberately, in full view of the Bellandi household and their soldiers and the gray indifferent sky, I slid the ring off.

The air changed. I could feel it happen, a subtle redistribution of pressure, the way a room shifts when someone draws a weapon. Serena's expression tightened by a fraction. Dominic's hand lowered the microphone an inch. I did not look at either of them. I walked forward, heels silent on the manicured grass, past the first row of chairs, past the cousins, past the capos' wives with their champagne and their judgment, and stopped a few feet from Serena Valente, who sat with her ankles crossed and her chin lifted and a glow of satisfaction radiating from her like heat from a banked fire.

Dominic tensed. He moved before he thought, crossing the distance between the arch and Serena in three fast strides and positioning himself in front of her like a shield, his body angled between us, one hand already half-raised.

"Bianca, what are you doing?" he demanded.

I didn't explain. I stopped a few inches away, close enough to see the faint tremor of triumph Serena was trying to suppress at the corners of her mouth, and I placed the ring gently into her open palm. Her fingers closed around it on instinct, and for one heartbeat her composure cracked. She hadn't expected this. None of them had.

"This ring was always a bit loose," I said. My voice was steady. "Guess it was never really meant for me."

I had seen him make it. Night after night in the back study of the compound, the door cracked open just enough for me to watch the careful work of his hands, the jeweler's tools borrowed from the old Bellandi vault, the concentration on his face that I had mistaken for love. When he finally gave it to me, it slipped on my finger with too much ease, and my tears flowed down my cheek. I was so happy. I told myself the fit didn't matter, that he had made it with his own hands, that the looseness was something I could fix with a jeweler's band. Then I found the engraving inside. A single initial, precise and deliberate, carved into the interior of the gold with the same care he had put into every facet. B. Not P. Not the letter that began my name in any language. B, for Serena's middle name, the private name he used for her when he thought no one was listening, just like the birthday tribute gift I had given him months ago, a monogrammed case I'd had engraved with what I thought was his own initial but which he kept because the letter matched hers. I had told myself it was a coincidence at first. I had told myself a lot of things.

"You two are a perfect match," I said, looking between them. "I wish you a lifetime of happiness together."

Gasps moved through the crowd like wind through dry grass. Chairs creaked. One of the soldiers along the perimeter shifted his weight and then caught himself, returning to stillness. The silence that followed was enormous, a cathedral silence, the kind that only forms when an entire room is holding its breath at once.

Dominic's face darkened. He snatched the ring back from Serena's palm, his signet ring scraping against his knuckle as his fist closed, and he turned on me with the cold fury of a man who has been publicly stripped of control in his own house, on his own land, in front of people who measure power the way a butcher measures weight.

"Bianca, are you crazy?" His voice was low and dangerous. "Serena and I are Family intimates. I've told you that. Why do you have to make a scene and ruin our wedding?"

He stepped closer. Close enough that I could smell the remnants of her perfume still clinging to his collar.

"If you mess this up, there won't be another one." His tone turned cold.

The old me would have apologized immediately. The old me would have dropped her eyes and softened her voice and begged him not to walk away, because for years I had dreamed of standing beside him at this altar with the Bellandi name wrapped around mine like armor. I had built my entire future on the image of becoming his wife, believing that if I just endured enough, loved enough, forgave enough, the man I had once known would return. But now, with his lipstick-stained collar inches from my face and the ring he had made for another woman clenched in his fist, I understood. A marriage pact couldn't keep someone who had already moved on. An alliance ceremony wouldn't magically make two people who didn't love each other happy. And no amount of Bellandi power could turn a lie into a life.

Serena joined in, stepping out from behind Dominic with an expression of tender concern so expertly performed it could have fooled a priest at confession. "Bianca, listen to him. There's nothing between me and Dominic. Today is about your happiness. Don't act rashly!" Her voice was warm, generous, perfectly calibrated, and her crimson nail tapped once, twice, three times against the champagne glass she still held, a private metronome of jealousy keeping time beneath the act.

Her performance landed exactly where she intended it to. Theo Bellandi nodded once from her seat, a silent coronation. The cousins murmured approval. Two of the capos' wives exchanged glances that said what everyone was thinking: Serena Valente would have made a better match. The room was choosing sides, and they were choosing her, publicly, collectively, in the way this Family chose everything, with the quiet violence of consensus.

My initial plan had been to leave quietly. To set the ring down, turn my back on the compound, and let the Bellandi household forget I had ever existed. But standing there, watching them use my humiliation as a pedestal to elevate Serena higher, watching Dominic's family nod along to the performance of a woman who had been sleeping with my groom while smiling at me across dinner tables for years, I saw no reason to hold back.

They wanted to step on me to crown her. Fine. Then they could see exactly who they were crowning.

With a quick swipe on my phone, I connected to the outdoor screen that hung behind the ceremonial arch, the same screen the Bellandis used for family tribute reels at holiday gatherings and communion celebrations. The display flickered to life. And there, projected ten feet tall in the gray afternoon light for every soldier, every capo's wife, every cousin, and Theo Bellandi herself to see, were Serena Valente's photographs with my promised groom, intimate and undeniable, blazing across the screen like a verdict no amount of Omertà could bury.
