Chapter 2

"Bianca?" Mark asked, lingering in the doorway. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, clutching a stack of manila folders against his chest. "Did you see the email from HR?"

Before I could answer him, a sharp voice cut through the quiet office.

"Mark, don't you have a quarterly report to finalize?"

Adrienne stood behind him. She wore the exact same sapphire gown from the television broadcast, though a tailored white blazer now covered her shoulders. The fabric looked expensive, stiff, immaculate. Mark ducked his head, muttering a quick apology, and scurried down the hall.

Adrienne stepped into my office, her shoes making soft thuds against the carpet. Her gaze drifted past me, landing squarely on the half-empty box sitting on my mahogany desk.

I brought my hands down hard, snapping the cardboard flaps shut. My fingers pressed flat against the rough surface, blocking her view of my personal files.

"Looking for something, Adrienne?" I asked.

She smiled. It was a thin, glossy curve of red lipstick that didn't reach her eyes.

"Just checking on our new remote advisor," she said. "I wanted to make sure you received this before you packed up your little desk."

She reached into her silver designer clutch and pulled out a thick envelope. Heavy cream paper. Gold foil stamping along the edges. She slid it across the smooth wood of my desk.

"The engagement party is next month," she said.

She rested her left hand directly on top of the envelope. She angled her wrist, making absolutely sure the harsh overhead fluorescent lights caught the massive diamond on her ring finger. It was a flawless emerald-cut stone, heavy and ostentatious.

"It is beautiful, isn't it?" Adrienne asked, her tone thick with false modesty. "Theo picked it out himself. He said he couldn't wait another single day to make it official."

I stared at the ring. The platinum band glinted sharply.

"He is full of surprises," I said flatly.

"You have no idea," Adrienne sighed, leaning her hip against the edge of my desk. "The way he asked was so entirely spontaneous. We were standing on the balcony at the Pierre Hotel. He didn't even have a speech prepared. He just looked at me and spoke straight from the heart. Three minutes of pure, unfiltered romance."

I kept my face perfectly still. My jaw tightened, then unclenched.

Three minutes.

Seventy-two hours ago, I sat in this exact ergonomic chair, staring at a blank document titled 'Theo_Proposal_V4'. He had called me in a blind panic at midnight, complaining that his first draft sounded too corporate, too rigid. I rewrote the entire thing. I paced the floor. I timed the cadence. Two minutes and fifty-eight seconds at a normal speaking pace.

"He always did have a way with words," I said, keeping my voice utterly devoid of emotion.

"He told me I was the only woman who ever truly understood his vision," Adrienne added. She stepped closer to the desk, invading my space. "You know, he almost felt bad about reassigning you. I had to remind him that Zenith needs a fresh image for the IPO. We need public-facing leaders. Not people who hide in the background."

"Is that what you call it?" I asked. "Hiding?"

"I call it knowing your place," Adrienne said smoothly. She traced the edge of the gold-stamped envelope with a manicured nail. "I guess that means Zenith Tech is going to be a family business now. Which is exactly why we need to tidy up a few loose ends before the weekend."

"Loose ends," I repeated.

"Your transition to the advisory role," she clarified, crossing her arms over the white blazer. "Theo is completely swamped with the upcoming merger. He wants to make sure the transition is seamless. You know how irritable he gets when his routine is disrupted."

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a silver digital voice recorder. She held it out to me, the metal casing catching the light.

"He recorded some rough notes for the Q3 board meeting," she said. "He needs you to draft the final speech before you leave the building today. Just polish it up, structure the talking points. The usual routine."

I looked at the recorder resting in her palm.

"My contract as Director of Operations ended at noon," I said. "I no longer write for Theo."

"Bianca, don't be difficult," Adrienne sighed, her glossy smile dropping into a hard line. "It is one speech. You have written hundreds for him over the years. Consider it a parting gift to the company you helped build. Or are you really going to leave him hanging right before the biggest board meeting of the entire fiscal year?"

I stared at her. The sheer entitlement radiating from her posture was almost impressive.

I reached out. My fingertips brushed her warm skin as I took the cold metal device from her hand.

"You are absolutely right," I said. "I should handle this exactly how a senior advisor would."

Adrienne's smug smile returned in full force. "I knew you would understand. Have it on his desk by five."

I turned away from her and walked toward the heavy-duty paper shredder sitting in the corner of the office. The machine was industrial-grade, designed specifically to chew through thick financial binders, plastic ID badges, and discarded credit cards.

I hit the green power button. The massive motor hummed to life, vibrating the floorboards beneath my shoes.

"Bianca, what are you doing?" Adrienne asked, her voice sharpening with sudden suspicion.

I held the silver recorder directly over the narrow feed slot.

"Polishing his notes," I said.

I opened my fingers and dropped the device into the machine.

The steel blades caught the metal casing instantly. A violent, shrieking crunch filled the small room. Plastic shattered into a dozen pieces. Internal wires tore apart with a high-pitched mechanical squeal. The shredder choked for a fraction of a second, the heavy motor groaning under the pressure, before ruthlessly grinding the entire device into jagged, useless shards.

The smell of hot metal and broken plastic wafted up from the bin.

"Are you insane?!" Adrienne shrieked, lunging forward.

She stopped short of the machine, staring in horror at the twisted plastic and metal debris spitting into the clear container below.

"That was the only copy of his notes!" she yelled.

"Then he better start writing," I said.

I walked back to my desk, picked up my cardboard box, and hoisted it firmly against my hip. The weight of my notebooks and framed photos pressed against my side.

"You are going to regret this," Adrienne hissed, her face flushed an ugly shade of red. "You think you are indispensable? You are just a ghostwriter, Bianca. A nobody behind a keyboard. Theo will not even notice you are gone."

"If I am a nobody," I said, pausing at the glass door, "then he shouldn't have any trouble passing the board vote without me."

I pushed through the heavy glass doors and walked out into the main corridor.

The open-plan office was dead quiet. Dozens of software engineers and marketing associates sat frozen at their desks, staring intently at their monitors, pretending they hadn't heard the commotion. A few desk phones rang, but nobody answered them. The silence was heavy, suffocating. I didn't look at a single one of them. I kept my chin up, my grip tight on the rough cardboard edges. My knuckles turned white from the strain.

The elevator bank sat at the far end of the hall. I marched straight toward it and pressed the down button.

The stainless steel doors slid open immediately. I stepped inside the empty car and hit the lobby button.

"Good luck, Bianca," someone whispered from a nearby cubicle.

I didn't turn around to see who it was. The elevator chimed, a soft, pleasant sound, and the heavy doors began to slide shut.

A sliver of the Zenith Tech logo painted on the opposite wall remained visible through the closing gap. I watched the gap narrow. Five inches. Three inches.

A hand shot through the opening.

The metal doors hit a solid wrist and violently retracted, bouncing open with a loud mechanical clunk.

A man stepped into the elevator car.

He wore a charcoal bespoke suit, the dark fabric perfectly cut across broad, imposing shoulders. A silk tie rested against a crisp white collar. The overhead light caught the gleam of the Patek Philippe watch strapped to his wrist.

I took a step back, pulling the cardboard box tighter against my ribs.

Julian Vance.

He didn't press a floor button. He just stood there, towering over me, his dark eyes locking onto mine with absolute focus. The doors slid shut behind him, sealing us inside the small steel box.

He glanced down at the pathetic collection of desk plants, pens, and notebooks in my arms. A harsh, mocking smirk touched the corner of his mouth.

"The real brain of Zenith is just going to roll out of here with a broken cardboard box?" he asked.
