Chapter 14

Amelia froze where she stood, her breath catching as her eyes fell on the figures before her - faces she thought she had escaped forever.

How had they found her?

How did they know where she was?

Her fingers tightened nervously at her sides as she turned toward Ethan, confusion flickering in her eyes.

"How... how did they find me?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

Before he could answer, her stepmother rushed forward, her arms open, her voice drenched in false affection.

"My darling! I missed you so much! How could you leave home like that and disappear? Do you have any idea how worried I've been?"

Amelia didn't move.

She stood stiff, her body frozen, her heart racing with fear she couldn't name.

Every word the woman spoke echoed against memories she had fought to bury -

the shouting, the blows, the nights she cried until her body shook.

Now that same voice called her dear.

The same hands that once hurt her reached to embrace her.

Her stepmother's perfume filled her nose - the same scent that used to cling to cruelty -

and Amelia flinched, taking a small step back without realizing it.

Her father stepped forward then, placing a hand on his wife's arm to pull her away.

He turned toward his daughter, his expression tight with guilt.

"I'm sorry, my little one," he said softly, as if words could undo years of neglect.

"I promise, I won't leave you again."

Then he looked toward Ethan - tall, silent, unreadable -

and nodded politely.

"Thank you, Mr. Carter," he said, "for looking after my daughter."

The name hit her like a spark.

Ethan.

It wasn't unfamiliar - it stirred something deep within her.

A strange warmth, a faint ache, as though she had always known that name, even before she heard it aloud.

Her sister ran up next, throwing her arms around her in an overly eager hug.

Amelia hesitated, uncertain.

Her sister's affection was unpredictable - genuine one day, cold the next.

And she knew, somewhere deep down, that her mother's venom had already begun to shape her too.

Still, she hugged her back,

because in that moment, even a hollow embrace felt better than the emptiness that had consumed her for so long.

The silence that followed was thick, suffocating.

No one spoke - until Ethan's voice cut through it like a calm command.

"I need to speak with you, Amelia," he said quietly, his tone controlled yet impossible to ignore.

"Just for a minute."

Every gaze turned toward him.

And Amelia...

her heart stilled for a single beat -

caught somewhere between fear of what he might say,

and an inexplicable longing to hear his voice again.

Stella turned to her daughter, her tone sharp and laced with greed.

"Why are you standing there so silently, Karina?" she snapped, her eyes gleaming with ambition.

"I want you to make that young man yours. He looks like the kind of man who could keep us comfortable for the rest of our lives - rich enough that we'd never need to lift a finger again."

Karina clenched her jaw, irritation flashing across her face.

"How am I supposed to do that, Mother?" she shot back bitterly.

"He's clearly obsessed with Amelia! He hasn't even looked at me once - his eyes haven't left her since the moment she walked in!"

Thomas sat back, a look of disgust tightening his features as he glanced between his wife and daughter.

For the first time, he truly saw them for what they were - mirror images of each other.

The same hunger, the same vanity, the same hollow pursuit of wealth.

He wondered, not for the first time, what kind of curse had driven him to choose such a woman - and to raise a daughter molded in her image.

Meanwhile, inside the mansion, Ethan faced Amelia, his voice low but firm, each word heavy with restraint.

"Listen to me, Amelia," he said quietly, his gaze steady and unyielding.

"I know you're still young - innocent - and you don't understand how dangerous the world can be. It's cruel out there. Which is why you need to go with your family now."

She parted her lips, ready to protest, but he lifted a hand to stop her before she could speak.

"You'll go now," he continued, calm but resolute. "And I promise you - no one will ever harm you again."

Amelia hesitated, her throat tightening.

She nodded silently, her eyes dropping to the floor, then turned and walked away - each step heavier than the last.

But deep down, she knew the truth.

This wasn't goodbye.

Because when night fell, she wouldn't stay where anyone left her.

She would vanish - to a place where no one could ever find her again.
