Chapter 6

Lilyana

The cold, greasy mop water was already beginning to dry on my skin, tightening into a sticky, foul-smelling film. Every step I took away from the central quad felt like dragging lead weights. My wet sneakers squelched loudly against the stone pavement, a rhythmic, humiliating reminder of what Madison had just done.

The adrenaline that had fueled my freezing, lethal stare down on the balcony was completely gone now, leaving me hollow, exposed, and violently shivering.

"Lilyana! Wait up!"

A pair of hurried footsteps crunched on the gravel behind me. I tensed, my defensive walls instantly slamming back into place. I pulled the soaked, heavy sleeves of my gray sweater down over my hands, hiding the platinum watch, and forced my spine to slouch again. I shoved my wet, fogged-up glasses back onto my nose, retreating into the safe, pathetic shell of the scholarship nerd.

I turned around, expecting Zander and his cruel, possessive smirk. But it wasn’t him.

Zachary Hudson was jogging toward me, his silver wire-rimmed glasses catching the light. His perfectly tailored button-down shirt was immaculate, completely contrasting the literal trash water dripping from my hair. His handsome face was twisted into an expression of intense, protective concern.

"Jesus, Lilyana," Zachary breathed, stopping right in front of me. He didn't look at me with disgust. He looked at me as if I were a piece of fragile porcelain that had just been dropped. "Are you okay? I saw what Madison did from across the lawn. That piece of shit went completely over the line."

"I'm f-fine," I muttered, my teeth chattering against my will. The fake, flat American accent I had practiced for months felt clumsy and heavy on my tongue right now. "It's just water. I'm fine."

"The hell you are. You're shaking," Zachary said, his voice dropping into a soft, commanding register. Before I could protest, he reached out and gently took my arm. His grip wasn't a brutal, iron shackle like his brother’s; it was light, respectful, but unyielding in its purpose. "Come on. There’s a small, private cafe right behind the engineering faculty. It's usually empty this time of day. Let’s get you cleaned up."

"Zachary, please, I should just go back to my dorm—"

"Your dorm is all the way across campus, and you're going to catch hypothermia walking like this," he interrupted gently, guiding me down a secluded path lined with heavy oak trees. "Trust me. Just for ten minutes."

I didn't have the energy to fight him. My body was entirely exhausted from the emotional whiplash of the last forty-eight hours. I let him lead me into the back entrance of a small, quiet cafe. The air inside was warm, smelling deeply of roasted coffee beans and cinnamon. Thank God, the place was practically deserted, save for a sleepy-looking barista at the counter.

Zachary immediately led me toward a secluded booth in the very back, hidden behind a large privacy partition.

"Sit down," he murmured, pulling out the chair for me. "I'll grab some hot towels from the restroom and order us something warm. What do you need?"

"Just... just some napkins or towels is fine. Thank you," I whispered, keeping my eyes glued to the dark wood of the table.

He nodded quickly and disappeared into the corridor. The moment he was gone, I slumped against the leather booth, burying my face in my hands. The putrid smell of the janitorial water was making my stomach turn. I felt a deep, agonizing ache in my chest. Back in London, a single word from me would have had Madison’s family begging on their knees for financial mercy. Here, I had to sit in a booth, smelling like a locker room floor, pretending to be a helpless charity case. The injustice of it burned like acid in my throat.

A few minutes later, Zachary returned. He carried a stack of clean, white cloth towels and a thick, dry woolen cardigan.

"Here," he said, sliding into the booth across from me and handing over the towels. "The barista gave me these. And this cardigan belongs to me—it's clean, it’s dry. Put it on."

"Zachary, I can't take your clothes—"

"Lilyana, take it," he urged, his brilliant eyes locking onto mine behind his glasses. There was a strange, heavy intensity in his gaze, a quiet determination that made my breath hitch. "Please. Let me help you."

I swallowed hard, taking the towels. I wiped the greasy moisture from my face, my neck, and my arms, scrubbing until my skin turned a bright, raw pink. I pulled off my heavy, soaked gray sweater, leaving me in a thin, damp tank top. Shivering violently, I quickly threw Zachary’s oversized cardigan over my shoulders. It was warm, soft, and smelled like expensive cedarwood and clean linen. It completely engulfed me, making me look even smaller than I already was.

"Thank you," I said quietly, adjusting my plastic glasses back onto my face. "You didn't have to do this."

"I wanted to," Zachary said, leaning his elbows on the table, closing the distance between us. His expression was dead serious. "I don't like the way people treat you here, Lilyana. Madison is a venomous brat, and my brother... Zander doesn't know how to handle anything without using caveman tactics. He thinks he can bully the world into doing what he wants."

"He's terrifying," I admitted, a genuine shudder running down my spine as I remembered Zander pinning me in the library, his eyes blazing with that feral, possessive jealousy. "He keeps looking at me like... like he wants to break me."

"He won't break you," Zachary said, his voice dropping into a low, fiercely protective promise. He reached across the table, his fingers brushing lightly against the edge of my sleeve, dangerously close to where my hand was hidden. "Not while I'm around. I told you before, I want you as my honors study partner. I can protect you from him, Lilyana. I can make sure your scholarship stays safe, and I can make sure Madison never touches you again. You just have to trust me."

The emotional weight of his words pressed heavily against my chest. Zachary felt safe. He was everything Zander wasn't—gentle, intellectual, respectful. He was offering me a shield in a warzone where I was completely outnumbered.

But a small, survivalist voice in the back of my mind whispered a warning. 'He's still a Hudson. They all want something.'

Before I could answer, the barista called out from the front counter. "Hey, order's up for the hot teas!"

Zachary started to slide out of the booth. "I'll go grab them."

"No, let me," I said quickly, wanting a brief second to escape the intense, suffocating weight of his gaze. I pushed myself up from the booth, wrapping his warm cardigan tightly around my body. "You brought the towels. The least I can do is carry the cups."

Zachary paused, then gave me a soft, indulgent smile. "Alright. Go ahead."

I walked over to the wooden counter, my sneakers still damp against the tiles. The warmth of the cafe was finally thawing out my frozen limbs, but my brain was completely fried from exhaustion, fear, and the sheer mental tax of keeping up my American disguise.

The barista pushed two steaming ceramic mugs toward me. "Here you go. Two black teas."

I looked down at the dark liquid. Out of nowhere, a wave of intense, suffocating homesickness hit me like a physical blow to the stomach. I missed London. I missed my father's pristine estate. I missed my private bedroom, the security, the utter safety of my true life before the betrayal ripped it all away. I hated black tea from a cheap paper filter. I wanted my specific comfort.

Without thinking, my guard dropped completely. The heavy, exhausting mask of the American scholarship nerd slipped right off my face in a moment of sheer, unadulterated weariness.

"Excuse me," I said to the barista.

But the voice that came out of my mouth wasn't flat, nasal, or American.

It was a flawlessly crisp, perfectly enunciated, aristocratic British accent—an old-money, high-society dialect that belonged in the royal drawing rooms of Belgravia, dripping with absolute elegance and unbothered authority.

"Could I possibly trouble you for a small jug of scalded milk and a slice of fresh lemon, please? And do ensure the milk is hot, if you don't mind."

The barista blinked, staring at me in absolute confusion, completely thrown off by the sudden, dramatic shift in my demeanor and voice. "Uh... yeah, sure. Let me check the back."

The second the barista turned around, reality slammed into me like a high-speed train.

My blood ran completely, utterly subterranean cold. My heart stopped dead in my chest.

Oh my god. What did I just do?

Panic, sharp and blinding, clawed up my throat. I squeezed my eyes shut, my hands trembling so violently against the wooden counter that I nearly knocked the ceramic mugs over. I had spoken in my real voice. My true, elite British accent.

Slowly, with a sense of ultimate dread, I turned my head back toward the secluded booth.

Zachary Hudson wasn't looking at his phone. He hadn't missed a single word.

He was standing halfway out of the booth, his entire body frozen solid. His silver wire-rimmed glasses had slid slightly down his nose, and his sharp, brilliant eyes were wide, staring at me with a terrifying, piercing intensity. The sweet, gentlemanly smile was entirely gone from his face, replaced by the calculating, dangerous look of a genius who had just solved a high-stakes puzzle.

He had heard me. He had heard the multi-million-dollar, old-money British heiress hiding beneath the frayed cardigan.

The silence in the cafe turned suffocating, heavy with the weight of an explosive secret. Zachary walked slowly toward the counter, his eyes locked onto mine, drilling straight through my cheap plastic frames, realizing with absolute, terrifying certainty that everything about the poor scholarship nerd was a massive, beautiful lie.
