Chapter 3

Lilyana

My hands were shaking so violently I could barely grip the edge of my notebook. I had pulled the sleeves of my oversized thrifted sweater completely over my hands, tucking the fabric firmly beneath my palms to ensure that stupid, priceless platinum watch was buried under layers of cotton. After yesterday's disaster on the basketball court, I felt like I was walking around with a target painted on my back.

I stood at the top of the tiered lecture hall for Advanced Economics, my eyes scanning the room in a desperate panic. The auditorium was a sea of moving bodies, loud chatter, and expensive laptops. Every single seat was taken.

Except one.

Dead center in the middle row, Zander Hudson sat with his long legs stretched out across the aisle, taking up enough space for two people. He was wearing a dark hoodie today, looking effortlessly striking and infuriatingly relaxed. He was typing something on his phone, completely ignoring the world around him.

"Excuse me, are you going to sit down or just block the stairs?" a guy behind me snapped, shoving past my shoulder.

I swallowed the lump of anxiety in my throat. I didn't have a choice. If I missed the first lecture, my scholarship profile would get flagged. Taking a deep, stabilizing breath, I forced my feet to move down the steps. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs with every step I took toward him.

I stopped at the edge of his row. "Excuse me. Is... is anyone sitting here?"

Zander didn't look up from his phone immediately. He finished typing a message, locked the screen, and then slowly, agonizingly turned his head. When his icy eyes locked onto mine behind my thick glasses, a slow, predatory smirk spread across his lips.

"Well, look what crawled out of the woodwork," Zander murmured, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that sent an unwelcome shiver down my spine. "The mysterious nerd with the expensive taste."

"I just need a seat, Zander," I whispered, my voice tight. "Please. Just let me sit down."

He glanced at the empty desk next to him, then back up at me, his eyes trailing over my baggy clothes before settling on my face. He took his time, deliberately making me squirm under his possessive, heavy gaze.

"Sit," Zander said, swinging his backpack off the empty chair and throwing it onto the floor. "But don't get comfortable, charity case. We still have a lot to talk about from yesterday."

I hurriedly slid into the seat, pulling my chair as far away from him as the detached desk would allow. I unpacked my cheap notebook and a plastic pen, keeping my head bowed. Across the room, I could feel a burning gaze. I looked up slightly and caught Madison Rhodes staring at me from three rows down. Her eyes were narrowed into venomous slits, her fingers white-knuckled around her designer pen. She looked like she wanted to murder me on the spot.

"Settle down, everyone," Professor Vance barked, stepping up to the podium at the front of the hall. He was an older man with graying hair, dressed in a sharp, old-money tweed suit. He looked exactly like the type of professor who judged students by the pedigree of their last names.

The room went dead silent.

Vance adjusted his glasses and looked down at his seating chart. "This is Advanced Macroeconomics. If you are here looking for an easy elective, leave now. I do not tolerate mediocrity, and I certainly do not tolerate students who cannot keep up with the rigorous pace of this institution."

He paused, his eyes scanning the tiers until they landed squarely on me. A cold, dismissive sneer touched his lips.

"Speaking of which," Vance said, his voice echoing through the microphone. "I see we have a new addition to our roster. Miss Lilyana Carter. A scholarship student, correct?"

A quiet ripple of whispers broke out across the lecture hall. I felt every eye in the room turn toward me. My skin flushed hot, a suffocating wave of humiliation crashing over me. I gripped my pen so hard the plastic groaned.

"Yes, Professor," I murmured.

"Speak up, Miss Carter. If you expect to survive my class, you need to find a voice," Vance condescended, crossing his arms. "Let's see if the admissions office actually found a diamond in the rough, or if they simply wasted a financial aid grant. Explain the core mechanism of the Mundell-Fleming model under a floating exchange rate regime, specifically regarding capital mobility and its immediate impact on monetary policy."

My breath hitched. The question was a trap. It was an incredibly advanced concept meant to break a standard freshman on their first day. But the irony was almost laughable. I knew the answer. I had listened to my father discuss international capital mobility over breakfast at our estate in London since I was twelve years old. I could rattle off the formula in my sleep.

But if I answered perfectly, I would draw attention. I would look like a genius, not a poor, struggling scholarship kid. I had to play dumb. I had to look like a nobody.

"I-I..." I started, my throat constricting. The pressure in the room was immense. Zander was leaning back in his chair next to me, his sharp eyes burning into the side of my face, watching my every micro-reaction. "I don't... I-I'm not entirely sure, Professor. I haven't—"

"Just as I thought," Vance interrupted, a smug, arrogant chuckle escaping his throat. "A complete waste of institutional resources. Perhaps you should consider dropping down to an introductory course, Miss Carter. Hudson University requires an intellectual caliber that you clearly lack—"

"Are you fucking blind, Vance, or just senile?"

The loud, lazy voice cut through the lecture hall like a buzzsaw.

The entire room gasped. I snapped my head to the side, my eyes wide with absolute shock.

Zander was leaning back, his hands clasped behind his head, staring down the professor with a terrifying aura of elite authority. There wasn't a single trace of fear on his face. He looked entirely in control, his posture dripping with the casual arrogance of a guy who knew his family owned the bricks of the building we were sitting in.

"Excuse me, Mr. Hudson?" Professor Vance stammered, his face turning an ugly shade of bright red. "What did you just say to me?"

"You heard me," Zander sneered, dropping his arms and leaning forward, resting his elbows on his desk. He didn't look at me; his icy gaze was locked onto the professor. "You're trying to flex your ego on a freshman because you're insecure. The answer to your basic-ass question is simple. Under a floating exchange rate with perfect capital mobility, monetary policy is highly effective. An expansionary monetary policy lowers the interest rate, causing capital outflow, which depreciates the currency and boosts net exports, shifting the IS curve to the right until income rises. It's not rocket science, Vance. It's textbook economics."

The lecture hall was completely paralyzed. You could have heard a pin drop on the carpeted floor. Professor Vance stood behind his podium, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, utterly humiliated by the campus golden boy.

"Th-that is... correct," Vance choked out, his voice trembling with repressed rage. He cleared his throat frantically, shuffling his papers. "Turn to page forty-two in your textbooks."

My heart was beating so loud I was convinced Zander could hear it. I sat frozen, my eyes staring blankly at my empty notebook. My mind was reeling, spinning out of control. Why did he do that? Why did Zander Hudson just ruin a professor to save me? He hated me. He thought I was a charity case. He had been bullying me just ten minutes ago.

Slowly, I turned my head to look at him.

Zander was already looking at me. The lazy, arrogant smirk was back on his face, but beneath it, his dark eyes held a dangerous, possessive intensity that made it hard for me to breathe. He slowly leaned over the small space separating our desks.

The physical proximity was overwhelming. He leaned in so close his shoulder brushed against mine, the warmth of his body seeping through my sweater. His breath fan gently against the sensitive skin of my ear, sending a powerful, terrifying bolt of electricity straight down my spine.

"Don't look so shocked, nerd," Zander whispered, his voice a low, wicked purr meant for my ears alone. "I don't let anyone else break my toys."

I gripped the edge of my desk, my knuckles turning white as his words sunk in.

He shifted even closer, his jaw brushing against the stray strands of my hair. "You owe me your life now, nerd. And trust me, I'm going to make sure you pay back every single second of it."
