Chapter 2

I couldn't move. The doorway became a threshold between the life I'd known and the one that had just died.

Soft jazz still drifted from the living room—romantic, mocking. Candlelight threw trembling shadows across their faces. My husband. My best friend. My bed.

Emily sprang to her feet first, mascara already pooling beneath her lashes. "Claire—it's not—"

"Not what it looks like?" The words escaped as a strangled laugh. My laugh. But also not mine. This voice belonged to someone who'd just watched the world burn.

"Because right now it looks like my best friend and my husband having a very private conversation on the bed we share."

Marcus pushed up slowly, guilt etched into every line of his face. "Please… just let me explain—"

"Explain what?" I hissed. "That you've both decided honesty was optional in our marriage? Or that she's pregnant?"

My gaze landed on Emily's trembling hand, protectively curved over her belly. The image seared into me—maternal, possessive, obscene.

The stillness cracked when Emily whispered, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"How long?" My voice was steady—eerily so, the calm just before a cliff collapses.

No one spoke. The silence roared like static.

" HOW LONG? "

The scream tore up my throat until it scraped raw.

Marcus flinched as if struck. "Two years," he finally murmured—two syllables that could have leveled continents.

For a heartbeat the room tilted. I stumbled backward, gripping the doorframe to keep from falling.

"Two years?" My voice broke into pieces. "So it started one year into our marriage? Every anniversary, every birthday—you were already lying?"

Emily's sobs were soft at first, then jagged, shaking her whole body. "It wasn't planned… it just happened."

"It HAPPENED? " The laugh that burst from me was manic, shredded. "Two years of ‘happening'? Was it ‘happening' when you zipped up my wedding dress? When you toasted us at the reception? When you held my hand at my father's funeral?"

Each question landed like a lash. Emily couldn't even look at me.

"Answer me!" I shouted.

Her mouth opened, but only a whisper came out. "Yes."

The word detonated in my chest.

Marcus stepped forward, panic and something like conviction flashing across his face. "Claire, stop. We do love each other."

Love. The word twisted through my ribs like a blade.

I stared at him—at the man who had kissed me that morning, who had slid a bracelet onto my wrist engraved with our wedding date. Right now it might as well have been a shackle. The metal burned against my skin.

"Get out." My voice dropped to a whisper, deadly and low.

"Claire—please." Emily reached toward me, a pathetic plea.

"Get out! " I screamed, ducking from her touch like it carried fire. "Both of you. Out of my house. Out of my life."

They looked at each other—still in sync even now. That silent exchange sliced deeper than any confession.

Marcus grabbed his jacket from the chair. Emily snatched up her purse, her beloved camera bag slung over her shoulder—the same bag that held years of photos of us, now tainted forever.

The door shut softly behind them, but the sound reverberated through every wall, through my ribs.

The house fell silent except for my breathing—uneven, raw—and the jazz song still playing somewhere far away.

I turned in slow circles, taking in the wreckage of normalcy. The bed rumpled from their weight. Emily's perfume still clinging to the air, sweet and nauseating. The half‑empty glass of wine.

My eyes landed on the framed photo from last Christmas—me, Marcus, and her, wrapped in matching ugly sweaters, laughter frozen mid‑sparkle. Marcus's arm around me, Emily's around him. How had I missed it?

Another photo—the wedding. Her lavender bridesmaid gown glowing beside my white. His smile that I'd once thought was mine alone.

The birthday surprise two years ago. The two of them planning together, their secret glances disguised as affection for me.

Every memory cracked, bending under the weight of what it truly was. Lies framed in silver.

Something inside me gave way.

Glass shattered as I hurled the Christmas photo against the wall. Then the wedding one. Then everything else. The guitar he'd written songs on. The scarf Emily had bought that very morning. Books, gifts, anything touched by them.

By the time I stopped, blood slicked my palms, thin cuts glittering under candlelight. I sank to the floor amid fragments of my life—breath hitching, body trembling.

The phone on the nightstand buzzed.

Emily: "Please talk to me."

Then Marcus: "I never meant to hurt you."

Through blurred vision I typed, fingers shaking but sure:

"You didn't hurt me. You destroyed me."

Then I blocked them both.

The silence afterward wasn't peace. It was absence—cold, cavernous.

And in that absence, for the first time, I felt nothing at all.
