The Drowned Wife's Spectacular Comeback Novel Cover

The Drowned Wife's Spectacular Comeback

Summer spent three months at her husband Julian's ICU bedside, protecting their unborn child. When he finally woke, she rushed to his yacht—only to overhear him call their baby a mistake and order his mistress to throw her into the freezing Atlantic. She survived, gave birth to triplets in a shack, but her eldest son Leo had a fatal heart defect. To save him, she anonymously returned the dying newborn to Julian and faked her death in childbirth. For five years she hid with her healthy twins, her heart breaking for the son she left behind. Now the naive Summer is gone. She has returned as Dr. Matilda Sterling, a world-renowned cardiologist—and her first patient at the Astor Medical Center is Leo. She will reclaim her child and burn Julian's world to the ground.

Chapter 2

The pain was the first thing Summer felt when consciousness returned—a white-hot agony radiating from her abdomen, eclipsing even the freezing cold that had seeped into her bones. She was no longer in the water. She was on a rough wool blanket, scratchy against her skin, in a small, salt-sprayed cabin. A fire crackled weakly in a rusted stove.

"Don't try to move." Chloe Sullivan's face swam into view, streaked with tears and salt spray. Her best friend. The one person she had always trusted. "I've been tracking Scarlett for months. I saw the yacht. I saw... Summer, I'm so sorry."

"Where—" Summer's voice came out as a cracked whisper. But then another wave of pain hit her, and she screamed.

The next hours were a blur of agony. In that crude, windswept shack, with nothing but boiled water and old blankets, Summer Hayes went into premature labor. The triplets she had been carrying—the babies she had dreamed of holding in a sterile, safe delivery room—were coming early, forced into the world by the trauma of the fall and the freezing water.

She gave birth to three tiny, fragile babies. Two boys and a girl.

The firstborn, the largest of the boys, was terrifyingly still. His skin had a bluish tint, and his breaths were shallow, ragged gasps. Chloe, her hands shaking, cleaned his tiny mouth. "He needs a hospital, Summer. He needs a NICU right now."

"Leo," Summer whispered, naming him through cracked lips. She had chosen the names months ago, in the quiet hours by Julian's hospital bed. Leo, Caleb, and Olivia.

The other two came next. Caleb, solemn even in his first cries. Olivia, loud and furious. They were small—barely four pounds each—but their lungs worked. They would survive, Chloe promised, if they could keep them warm and fed.

But Leo. Leo was fading.

A new kind of despair, sharper and more profound than any she had ever known, seized Summer. She looked at her two healthy children, then at Leo, his tiny chest struggling with each breath. She couldn't save him. But she knew who could.

The decision tore her apart. It was a physical agony, a cleaving of her soul. The Astor family had the best medical resources in the country. The Astor Medical Center had a world-renowned pediatric cardiology unit. She would send her sickest child back to the family that had tried to destroy her, because it was the only way to keep him alive.

But not to Julian. Never directly to Julian. She would leave him where he would be found, anonymously. The Astors would not be able to ignore a dying infant on their doorstep—not with Arthur Astor's obsession with the family legacy.

Chloe, her face streaked with tears, argued fiercely against it. "Summer, you can't trust them. After what Julian did—"

"What Julian said," Summer corrected, her voice a ragged whisper. She had replayed those final moments on the yacht a thousand times in her fevered mind. Julian's cold words. But also the guard's moving lips. Scarlett's smile. "I don't know what really happened on that yacht. But I know Scarlett was involved. And I know the Astors have the only doctors who can save Leo."

She slipped her wedding ring off her finger, the cold gold a final, bitter reminder of her broken vows. She tucked it into the folds of Leo's threadbare blanket. It was proof. Whatever Julian had or hadn't done, this ring would tell him the child was hers.

A discreet, reliable courier—a man named Tom Hicks who owed Chloe his career—was summoned. Leo was swaddled in the cleanest blanket they had, a small note tucked beside him with only his name and a single word: Heart.

Chloe watched the car disappear into the pre-dawn darkness, then turned back to Summer. "I've arranged transport. We're going west. I have contacts who can get us new identities."

Summer clutched Caleb and Olivia to her chest, her body trembling with exhaustion and grief. Each mile that would separate her from Leo was a fresh wound. "Summer Hayes died in the Atlantic," she said, her voice hollow. "That's what they need to believe. All of them."

Because she didn't know the truth. She didn't know if Julian had truly ordered her death, or if Scarlett had orchestrated it alone. Until she knew for certain, everyone was a threat. Everyone.

Three days after Summer's disappearance from the Hamptons, Arthur Astor stormed into his grandson's study at the Astor mansion. The family patriarch's cane struck the marble floor with a sharp crack.

"Julian! What is this I hear about Summer? Missing?" Arthur's voice boomed, filled with a genuine distress that made Julian flinch. "That girl is carrying your children. My great-grandchildren. Triplets, Julian. She was carrying triplets, and you didn't even know, did you? I want every resource we have dedicated to finding her. Every detective, every boat, do you understand me?"

Julian remained seated behind his massive desk, his expression unreadable. But beneath the mask, something was wrong. The doctors had warned him that his memories of the hours after waking from the coma might be fragmented. He remembered the hospital. He remembered the yacht. He remembered saying things to Scarlett—cruel, unforgivable things—but the context slipped away whenever he tried to grasp it, like water through his fingers.

Why had he said those things? He had been angry, yes. Angry at the marriage he'd been pushed into, angry at the accident that had stolen three months of his life. But he couldn't remember deciding to destroy Summer.

"The police are handling it, Grandfather," Julian said, his voice carefully measured. "And the coast guard is searching the waters."

"Summer was unstable," Scarlett interjected smoothly from her position near the window, her eyes wide with feigned concern. "Everyone knew it. The pregnancy hormones, Julian's accident... she probably just..."

"Get out," Arthur said, not even looking at her. "This is a family matter."

Scarlett's smile flickered, but she inclined her head and glided from the room. Julian watched her go, a strange unease settling in his stomach.

When she was gone, Arthur leaned heavily on his cane. "I never trusted that woman. Your father's mistake was letting her family get their hooks into ours. Don't repeat it." He fixed Julian with a hard stare. "Find Summer. Find your children. Or don't bother coming to the next board meeting."

He left, and Julian sat alone in the darkening study.

The next morning, one of the household staff found the bassinet at the massive front gate. A security guard brought it inside, his face pale. "Sir, you need to see this."

Julian approached the bundle with a strange sense of dread coiling in his chest. Inside was an infant—tiny, impossibly fragile, with a bluish tinge to his lips. For a moment, Julian couldn't move, couldn't think. A baby. Summer's baby. It had to be.

His hand brushed against something cold. He reached into the folds of the blanket and pulled out a ring. Her ring. The one he had placed on Summer's finger on their wedding day, in a ceremony neither of them had truly wanted but both had gone through with for the sake of their families.

The air left his lungs in a rush.

As if on cue, his phone rang. A blocked number. A man's gravelly voice delivered a cold, clinical report.

"Summer Hayes. Found in a back-alley clinic outside the city. Massive hemorrhaging after a difficult birth. She didn't make it. Her dying wish was for the child to be delivered to the Astor family. The other two didn't survive."

The lie should have been obvious. But Julian, reeling from the sight of the dying infant and the weight of the ring in his palm, didn't question it. Summer was dead. Their other children—triplets, his grandfather had said, and he hadn't even known—were dead. The finality of it hit him with a strange, hollow ache he refused to name as guilt.

He looked down at the baby, who was stirring weakly, his breathing shallow and labored.

"Get my medical team here. Now," Julian barked at his assistant. "And contact the pediatric cardiac unit at the medical center."

He didn't understand what had happened. He didn't know what to believe. But he couldn't leave the child to die.

Miles away, in the back of a beat-up sedan heading west, Summer clutched Caleb and Olivia to her chest. Each mile that separated her from Leo was a fresh wound. Tears streamed down her face, silent and hot.

She was no longer Summer Hayes, the hopeful wife. That woman had died in the Atlantic. A new person was being forged in the fire of loss and uncertainty.

She looked out at the disappearing lights of New York and made a silent, deadly vow. One day, she would be back. She would learn the truth about what happened on that yacht. She would take back her son. And if Julian had truly betrayed her—if those cold words had been his alone—she would burn his world to the ground.

But if he hadn't... if Scarlett had orchestrated this... then the revenge would fall on the right head.

Until then, she would wait. She would prepare. And she would keep her remaining children safe from everyone.
