Chapter 2

A strange calm settled over Ellie after the initial shock.

It was the quiet that comes after a storm, the stillness of utter devastation. There was nothing left to break.

Her fingers, numb and cold, picked up the agreement. She flipped through the pages, the crisp paper a stark contrast to the chaos in her mind. Each clause, each number, was a cold calculation of her worth over the past three years.

Brock watched her, a slight frown creasing his brow. He had expected tears, accusations, a messy scene. Not this unnerving silence.

Her eyes landed on the section detailing the settlement. A seven-figure sum. A "generous" compensation.

A dry, humorless laugh escaped her lips.

It was a small sound, but it echoed in the tense room, filled with a chilling mockery.

"What are you laughing at?" Eleanor snapped, her face contorted with outrage. "What Brock is giving you is more than you deserve!"

Ellie ignored her completely.

She walked to the desk, her movements fluid and deliberate. She picked up the heavy, expensive fountain pen Brock favored.

The nib scratched against the paper as she signed her name at the bottom of the last page.

Ellie Mills.

With a final, decisive flick of her wrist, she pushed the signed agreement back toward Brock.

His eyes widened slightly, a flicker of some unreadable emotion in their icy depths. He hadn't expected it to be this easy.

Ellie turned and walked toward the vast walk-in closet. She bypassed the rows of designer clothes, the shelves of expensive shoes, the velvet-lined drawers of jewelry. None of it was hers.

She pulled out the single, worn suitcase she had arrived with three years ago.

Returning to the main room, she opened her own wallet. Her fingers retrieved a single, crisp bill.

She walked to the king-sized bed, to the side that had been hers. Slowly, deliberately, she placed the one-dollar bill flat on the nightstand.

Brock and Eleanor stared, utterly baffled by her actions.

Ellie turned to face her husband one last time. For the first time in three years, she met his gaze without fear, without hope, without anything but a chilling emptiness.

"For the last three years," she said, her voice even and clear. "Let's just say I paid for your services. This is your tip."

She gestured to the dollar.

"Now, we're even."

The words hung in the air, more shocking than any scream. It was a slap in the face, delivered with surgical precision. Eleanor gasped, her hand flying to her chest, her body trembling with fury.

Brock's pupils contracted. A crack finally appeared in his stoic facade, a flash of raw, offended shock.

Ellie didn't wait for a reaction.

She picked up her suitcase and walked out of the bedroom, out of the mansion, out of the life that had been her gilded cage. As she pulled the door shut behind her, her gaze swept one last time over a small, empty corner of the room-a space she had once, foolishly, imagined as a nursery. A sharp, private pain lanced through her heart, a pain only she would ever know.

Six years later.

Paris. A sun-drenched, top-floor design studio overlooking the city.

Ellie Mills, dressed in a chic, professional pantsuit, reviewed a series of design sketches. The woman she was now bore little resemblance to the pale, defeated girl who had left Miami. She was confident, poised, her every movement imbued with a quiet power.

Her phone buzzed on the glass desk. The screen lit up with a custom caller ID: "Little Demon & Little Angel."

A small smile touched her lips as she answered. Her voice was a mix of exasperation and deep affection.

"Caleb, Chloe, what is it now?"

A boy's voice, startlingly mature for his age, came through the speaker. "Mommy, we've registered you for the Miami Fashion Week emerging designer competition."

He was immediately followed by a girl's sweet, bubbly voice. "Yes, yes! And the plane tickets are already booked! For tomorrow!"

Ellie pressed her fingers to her temple, a headache already forming. "You hacked my computer again, didn't you?"

"To be precise," Caleb replied calmly, "we optimized your itinerary. Our market analysis indicates that a return to the U. S. market would be beneficial for brand expansion."

"And," Chloe added cheerfully, "we threatened Auntie Lynn with your unfinished sketches. She agreed it was a great idea!"

Ellie couldn't help but laugh, a genuine, warm sound. She was being held hostage by her own six-year-old twins.

She gazed out the window at the Parisian skyline. Miami. The city she had fled, the city that held all her ghosts. It seemed fate, in the form of two precocious children, was pulling her back.

She let out a long sigh, surrendering.

"Alright, you little monsters," she said into the phone. "You win."
