Chapter 2

When I got close enough to see Caleb’s face clearly, my entire body locked up.

He was trembling. Not crying, not screaming—just trembling in that hollow, quiet way that meant something inside him had already given up.

He was only eight.

Eight years old, for God’s sake.

How does a child end up like this?

As he kept bowing over and over, his sleeves slid back without him noticing. That was when I saw it—my stomach dropped so hard I thought I might throw up.

Bruises. Old ones layered over newer ones. Thin, fading scars running across his small arms like someone had been marking him down piece by piece. And when he tilted his head slightly—

There.

Around his neck.

Faint but undeniable.

Marks. Pressure marks. Like something had been tightened around him.

My legs moved before my mind caught up. I grabbed his shoulders fast.

“Caleb… baby, stand up. You don’t need to do this. Mama’s here now.”

The moment my hands touched him, he flinched violently.

Then he started hitting himself.

Not once. Not twice. Repeatedly, like it was automatic.

“I’m sorry!” he blurted out, words rushing out flat and rehearsed. “I did something wrong! I accept punishment. I’ll go to the cold storage room now… three hours… I won’t cry, I promise. I won’t cry…”

It felt like something inside me shattered completely.

Slowly, I lifted my head.

And looked straight at Victor.

I didn’t need to speak. My eyes did.

Before he could even react, Delilah suddenly stepped in and pulled Caleb into her arms. She hugged him tightly, like she was something gentle and holy.

“You’ve got it all wrong,” she said softly, almost sadly. “Caleb and I were just playing. We do this all the time. Sometimes I’m the servant, sometimes he is. Today was just his turn. That’s all.”

I stared at her like I couldn’t process the words.

Then my hand lifted on its own, pointing at my son’s neck. It was shaking so badly I could barely keep it steady.

“That,” I choked out, voice breaking, “is not a game. Those are marks. Those are injuries. And you’re telling me this is pretend? You think this is normal for a child?”

Tears welled in Delilah’s eyes immediately.

Victor’s expression shifted—dark, sharp, furious. He grabbed me and shoved me back. I stumbled, nearly losing my balance.

“That’s enough!” he snapped. “Do you enjoy embarrassing people like this? You always turn everything into a scene. Delilah isn’t like you—she doesn’t carry poison in her heart, she doesn’t scheme.”

Then he pointed at Caleb like he was correcting a mistake.

“That isn’t a wound. It’s paint. They were drawing earlier—it just didn’t come off. You were gone for a year, and you failed as a mother. Delilah stepped in out of kindness, and this is how you repay her? With accusations?”

A laugh escaped me.

It sounded wrong. Broken.

Paint?

I looked at Caleb again.

He was staring at Delilah now.

Not with affection.

Not with comfort.

With fear. Deep, rooted fear that didn’t leave even when he tried to hide it.

I turned back to Victor, tears finally spilling down my face.

“Are you seriously blind?” I whispered. “Look at him. Really look at him. He’s terrified. Of her. Of you. And you still want to call this a game?”

Victor hesitated.

Just for a moment.

His gaze flicked to Caleb—and something unreadable crossed his face.

Delilah caught it immediately.

Her face crumpled as she suddenly broke into loud sobs.

“I just wanted to belong,” she cried. “I thought if I tried hard enough… if I took care of Caleb… I could finally be part of this family. But I guess I was wrong. I’ll never be enough. I’ll always be nothing.”

She tore the veil off her head, shoved it into Victor’s chest, and ran toward the house, covering her face as she went.

The entire room erupted.

Voices clashed everywhere.

“She ruined everything!”

“She’s cursed!”

“Of course disaster follows her!”

Victor stood there watching her disappear, jaw tight, eyes burning with anger. Then he turned back to me.

“Are you satisfied?” he barked. “The wedding was just formality. Nothing more. You could’ve let it go, but no—you had to create chaos.”

His eyes dropped to Caleb, full of disgust.

“And your son,” he added coldly. “Crying, kneeling, acting like he’s been mistreated. Very convincing for an eight-year-old. If he ever gets an award, he should thank you for teaching him drama.”

Then he turned away and went after Delilah without another word.

My parents said nothing to defend me.

Not a single word.

Instead, my mother slapped me across the face, and my father shoved me hard enough that I hit the ground.

“All of this is your fault!” my mother screamed. “Did you even know your sister is pregnant with twins?!”

“You couldn’t even keep your own husband!”

“Shameless!”

I didn’t argue.

I didn’t have anything left to give.

I just pulled Caleb into my arms and held him close. His small body pressed against mine, both of us shaking like we were trying not to fall apart completely.

“It’s okay,” I whispered again and again. “Mama’s here. You’re safe now. I’m taking you away. No one will ever hurt you again… I promise.”

My tears soaked into his hair.

Then, still holding him, I reached for my phone.

One message to my lawyer.

Prepare the divorce.

After that, I dialed the only number that ever answered when everything else turned into hell.

Kane Whitlock.

When he picked up, my voice came out low and steady, even if my hands weren’t.

“I need a favor.”

My eyes swept over the Langford mansion—the polished walls, the smiling guests, the empire built on lies and blood.

“I’ll bring down the Langford Group,” I said quietly. “Just like you wanted. This time, I won’t hesitate.”

A pause.

Then I added, “In exchange, keep me and my son safe.”

And for the first time since everything began, I didn’t take a single word back.
