Chapter 2

One month before the fire.

The grandfather clock in the cavernous dining hall of the Thorne estate chimed midnight. Each chime was a small death, marking the passing of another minute he hadn't come home.

Adaline Sinclair stood alone, a silent sentinel over a dinner that had long gone cold.

She had spent the entire afternoon preparing it. Coq au vin, his favorite. A Black Forest cake, her own clumsy but heartfelt creation, sat in the center of the table. It was his thirtieth birthday.

She pulled out her phone, her thumb hovering over his contact. Instead, she opened a news app. The headline was a punch to the gut.

Thorne Industries CEO Julian Thorne Dines with Socialite Sienna Stone. A New Romance?

The photo was sharp, unforgiving. Julian, looking as impassive as ever, but he wasn't pushing away the hand Sienna had placed possessively on his arm. He was allowing it. Tolerating it.

The last bit of warmth in her chest turned to ice.

He finally arrived an hour later. The scent of expensive whiskey and a cloyingly sweet perfume clung to him like a second skin. He saw the elaborate table setting, the cake, and his jaw tightened.

"What is all this?" he asked, his voice laced with irritation.

Adaline rose from her chair, her limbs feeling stiff. "It's your birthday, Julian."

He loosened his tie, his gaze sweeping over her with a familiar, dismissive coldness. "Adaline, don't play this devoted wife game. It doesn't suit you."

He walked closer, his presence filling the cold, empty room. "What do you want this time? A new piece of jewelry? Or does that failing subsidiary of your family's need another injection of my cash?"

His words were surgical. Precise. They found the most vulnerable part of her and twisted.

Tears pricked at the back of her eyes, hot and shameful. She refused to let them fall. She held up her phone, showing him the picture.

"Who is she?" Her voice was a bare whisper.

Julian glanced at the screen, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes before they went flat again. "Someone far more interesting than you."

He stood over her, a towering figure of casual cruelty. "You know what this marriage is, Adaline. It's a contract. Stop pretending it's anything more." He leaned in, his voice dropping to a low, cutting murmur. "Play your part. Be Mrs. Thorne. And stop causing trouble."

She looked at him. Really looked at the man she had loved with a desperate, all-consuming passion for five years. The man she had rearranged her entire world for. And in that moment, she saw nothing left to love. The final ember of hope she'd been nursing in her heart was finally, brutally, extinguished.

A strange, broken sound escaped her lips. It was a laugh.

Her hand, trembling slightly, reached for the cake knife.

Julian tensed, a flicker of alarm in his eyes. He thought she might lunge at him.

Instead, she turned to the cake. Her cake.

She plunged the knife into its heart.

Once. Twice. Three times. She hacked at it, a frenzy of motion, destroying the layers of chocolate and cream she had so carefully constructed. Smears of black and white covered her hands, her arms. It was a massacre of a memory that was never made.

Julian took an involuntary step back, his cold composure finally cracking. He looked... shocked.

She lifted her head. Her face was smudged with frosting, but her eyes were blazing with a terrifying clarity.

"You're right, Julian," she said, her voice steady now. "You're absolutely right."

She dropped the knife with a clatter. She turned and ran up the grand staircase, ignoring his stunned silence.

Minutes later, she returned. She was holding a sheaf of papers. She threw them onto the table in front of him. They slid across the polished wood, coming to a stop in a smear of whipped cream.

A divorce agreement. Already signed. Her signature was a sharp, angry slash at the bottom of the page.

"I don't want a single penny," she said, each word a perfectly formed shard of ice.

For the first time, Julian looked truly unsettled. He stared at the papers, then at her face, as if seeing her for the very first time.

She didn't give him a chance to speak. She turned her back on him, on the ruined dinner, on the wreckage of their marriage, and walked out the front door into the darkness.

The next day, a formal letter from her lawyer arrived.

That, and a final text message from her. It contained only two words.

You're free.

He'd deleted it, annoyed. Just another one of her tantrums, he'd thought.

He didn't know it was goodbye.
