Chapter 1

I hadn't seen my son in five years.

I pushed open the heavy oak doors of the St. Jude Academy auditorium. The annual parent-teacher conference was already in full swing.

I spotted him instantly in the third row. Leo. He had grown so much, his shoulders broader, his profile a mirror image of his father.

I stepped forward, clutching the wrapped gift box in my hands. Inside was a vintage compass for the Switzerland aviation lab he had spent six months fighting to qualify for.

Then I saw who sat next to him.

Vivian occupied the seat marked 'Leo's Parent'. Kyle sat on her other side, leaning in to whisper something that made her smile.

They looked like a flawless, happy family.

The paper of the gift box crinkled under my tightening grip.

"Leo," I called out, my voice cutting through the low hum of the room.

Three heads snapped in my direction.

Kyle frowned, his jaw tightening. Vivian's smile vanished, replaced by a wide-eyed stare.

But it was Leo's reaction that pinned me to the floor.

He didn't smile. He didn't run to me. He just glared.

"Why are you back?" Leo asked. His tone carried the freezing chill of a winter storm.

I forced my hands to relax, lowering the box to my side.

"I came to attend your conference," I answered. "I know today is the day they announce the European Spring Study Tour."

Leo scoffed. He reached over and laced his fingers through Vivian's.

"She is my mom," he announced, loud enough for the parents and teachers nearby to hear. "Not you."

A dead silence rippled through our section of the auditorium.

I stared at their joined hands. My own flesh and blood, claiming the woman who had torn my marriage apart.

Vivian patted his knuckles, her expression morphing into a mask of exaggerated pity.

"Oh, Leo, sweetheart," she murmured, her voice laced with fake sympathy. "Don't say things like that. She traveled a long way."

Kyle shifted in his chair, shielding Vivian slightly with his shoulder.

"Iris," Kyle warned. "Why did you just show up out of nowhere? Look what you're doing. You're agitating the child."

"Agitating him?" I asked. "I'm his mother. I have every right to be here."

"You lost that right when you left," Kyle shot back. "You don't get to barge in here and disrupt his life."

"I came to support my son," I countered. "You're the one playing house in a school auditorium."

Vivian gasped, pressing a hand to her chest. "Iris, please. We just want what's best for Leo. He's been so stressed about this trip. He needs stability, not surprises."

"Stability?" I arched an eyebrow. "Is that what you call moving into my house two weeks after the divorce papers were signed?"

A few parents in the row ahead of us turned around, their eyes wide with gossip.

Vivian's cheeks flushed red. "That's ancient history. We're a family now."

"Stay out of this, Vivian," I snapped.

"Don't talk to her like that," Leo interjected, standing up. He stepped in front of Vivian, shielding her just like his father had.

I ignored the adults and focused entirely on the teenage boy glaring at me. My vision blurred slightly, a hot sting building behind my eyelids.

"Leo," I said, keeping my voice steady. "I'm going to ask you this once. Do you really not acknowledge me?"

He didn't even hesitate.

"Right," Leo spat. "I don't need you."

I nodded slowly. The sting in my eyes vanished, replaced by a hollow ache in my chest. A strange, quiet calm washed over me.

Before I could reply, the microphone on the stage whined with feedback. The principal stepped up to the podium, tapping the mic.

"Parents, students, if I could have your attention," the principal announced. "It is time to reveal the final roster for the European Spring Study Tour."

Leo immediately dropped Vivian's hand and sat up straight, his hostility momentarily forgotten.

"This year's competition was fierce," the principal continued. "But I am proud to say that Leo has secured a spot for the Switzerland aviation lab and the alpine ski training!"

Polite applause broke out. Kyle clapped Leo on the back. Vivian beamed, hugging the boy tightly.

"Furthermore," the principal added, his voice booming over the speakers. "We owe a massive debt of gratitude to the Whitmore Foundation. Their continued, full-ride sponsorship makes these international academy exchanges possible."

I didn't sit down. I didn't clap.

I stepped into the aisle, raising my voice so it echoed off the high vaulted ceiling.

"Then cancel this year's sponsorship."

The applause died instantly. Hundreds of heads turned my way.

Vivian let out a sharp, mocking laugh.

"Cancel it?" Vivian sneered, standing up to face me. "Who do you think you are? You show up after five years and think you can just bark orders at the school board?"

"I don't think," I said evenly. "I know."

On stage, the principal shielded his eyes from the spotlight, peering into the audience.

The color drained from his face the second he recognized me.

"Miss Whitmore," the principal stammered, his hands gripping the edges of the podium.

Vivian froze. She looked from me to the principal, her mouth falling open. "What did you just call her?"

"Miss Whitmore," the principal repeated, his voice trembling now. "I... we weren't expecting you today, ma'am. The board was under the impression you were remaining in Europe."

"Plans change," I replied. "But my instruction stands. The Whitmore Foundation is withdrawing all funding, overseas lab resources, and partnership agreements for this project."

Kyle stood up now, his face pale. "Iris, what are you doing?"

"Exactly what I said," I told him.

The principal swallowed hard, leaning into the microphone. "But Miss Whitmore, without those funds... the entire spring program is suspended. Effective immediately. We can't cover the aviation lab fees or the travel expenses."

Chaos erupted in the auditorium. Parents began whispering frantically. Students groaned in disappointment.

Leo shot out of his chair. The smug defiance was entirely gone from his face.

"Suspended?" Leo yelled over the noise. "No! I worked for six months for this! You can't do that!"

I turned my back on him and walked toward the exit.

My flats slapped against the polished marble floor.

"Hey! Stop!"

Footsteps pounded behind me. I pushed through the double doors and out into the quiet, sunlit hallway.

Leo caught up, grabbing my elbow.

"Why did you cancel it?!" he demanded, his chest heaving.

I yanked my arm out of his grasp.

"You answered that question yourself two minutes ago," I told him.

"What are you talking about?"

"You said I'm not your mom," I reminded him. "You said you don't need me."

Leo opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

"If you don't need me," I continued, stepping closer so he had to look me in the eye. "Then you shouldn't need what I give you either."

"That's not fair!" he shouted. "I earned those grades! I earned that spot!"

"And I earned the money that funds it," I replied coldly. "Welcome to the real world, Leo. Actions have consequences."

"You're just doing this to get back at Dad!" he accused, his hands balling into fists. "You're ruining my life because you're jealous of Vivian!"

I laughed. A dry, humorless sound that surprised even me.

"Jealous?" I echoed. "I left them behind five years ago. I came back today for one reason only. You."

Leo blinked, his anger faltering for a split second.

"I brought you a gift," I said, gesturing to the box still in my hand. "I flew fourteen hours to watch you get accepted into a program I funded. And you told a room full of strangers that Vivian is your mother."

I turned to leave again.

Panic flashed in his eyes. The reality of his ruined trip finally crashing down on him.

"Mom! Wait!"

The word hung in the quiet corridor. Five years I had waited to hear it.

I stopped and looked back over my shoulder.

"Are you calling me mom now because I'm actually your mother?" I asked. "Or because you want to go on a spring trip?"

Leo stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He had no answer.

I didn't wait for one.

I walked toward the main entrance, leaving him standing alone in the hallway.

Just as my hand touched the glass door, Kyle burst out of the auditorium.

"Iris, wait!" Kyle shouted, jogging toward me. "You can't just drop a bomb like that and walk away."

"I just did," I said, pushing the door open.

He caught the frame, stopping me from leaving. "Punish me. Punish Vivian. But don't take this out on Leo. You know how much this trip means to him."

"He made his choice, Kyle. You all did."

"He's a teenager," Kyle argued, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "He's confused. You springing this on him out of nowhere wasn't fair."

"And having your mistress sit in my chair was?" I asked.

Kyle flinched.

I pulled the door from his grip and walked out into the brisk afternoon air.

As I reached my car, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I slid into the driver's seat and pulled it out.

It was a text from an unknown number.

*You shouldn't have come back. The boy is ours now, and you're going to regret crossing us.*
