Chapter 4

The apartment door opened, and Keith stepped inside, calling my name. His voice was casual, almost jaunty, as if he expected everything to be exactly as he had left it. I was in the living room, a book open on my lap, a cup of herbal tea steaming beside me. I had just gotten back from a long run, showered, and changed into a flowy, forest green dress I' d bought in Iceland but never worn. My hair, usually pulled back in a practical ponytail, was loose around my shoulders, shining. Minimal makeup, just enough to highlight my eyes.

He stopped dead in the entryway, his eyes raking over me. His casual demeanor faltered. "Julia?" he said, a note of surprise in his voice. "You… you look different."

He walked closer, his hand reaching out. He tried to touch my arm, a familiar gesture that used to make my heart flutter. Now, it just felt intrusive.

I subtly shifted my arm, denying him contact. "I feel different."

He awkwardly dropped his hand. "I picked up dinner," he announced, trying to regain his footing. "Your favorite. Sushi." He held up a plastic bag. "I thought we could finally have a nice, quiet dinner together."

My eyes went to the bag. It was from a cheap, all-you-can-eat place down the street, not the upscale omakase place we used to frequent. The plastic clam shells inside were already sweating. The sushi pieces looked sad, pale, and small.

"It' s a little… squashed," I noted, my gaze drifting back to my book.

He peered into the bag, then back at me, a flicker of guilt crossing his face. "Oh, right. It was a bit of a rush. Kandice had some questions about her meds, and I had to swing by the pharmacy. It' s still good, though. Mostly."

"I see." My voice was flat.

"Or," he quickly offered, "we could go out? I can still make reservations somewhere nice. Just the two of us."

I looked up from my book, meeting his gaze directly. "I can' t. I have plans."

His eyes narrowed. "Plans? With whom? You just got back."

I closed my book, placing it carefully on the coffee table. "Does it matter? I have plans."

"What' s with the attitude, Julia?" he demanded, his voice hardening. "You' ve been gone two weeks, barely a word, and now you' re suddenly too busy for me? And this… makeover. Is this for someone else?"

I stood up, walking past him towards the door. "You' ve always told me to take care of myself, Keith. To be more independent. To stop being so clingy. To find my own interests." I stopped at the door, turning back to face him, a faint smile playing on my lips. "Isn' t that what you always wanted? For me to be less… needy?"

He flinched, the words echoing his past criticisms. I remembered all the times he' d complained about my outfits, my hobbies, my friends. He had meticulously chipped away at my self-esteem, molding me into someone he thought was acceptable, someone who wouldn' t overshadow him.

My mind went back to an evening years ago. I' d spent hours getting ready for his hospital gala, choosing a sleek, classic black dress. He' d barely glanced at me. Later, he' d pulled me aside, whispering, "You know, Julia, that dress is a bit… much. You should aim for something simpler. More understated."

Then there was the time I'd tried to organize a book club with some friends. He'd scoffed, "A book club? Really, Julia? Don't you think you have more important things to do? Like focusing on our future?"

I had always tailored myself to his preferences, his moods. I had shrunk myself to fit his expectations. He didn't want a partner; he wanted an accessory, a reflection of his own greatness.

He always praised Kandice' s 'youthful energy' and 'vibrant style.' Kandice, who wore bright, attention-grabbing colors and laughed a little too loudly at Keith' s jokes. Kandice, who was everything he subtly criticized me for being.

But now, it didn' t matter. His approval, his opinions, meant nothing. The realization was a cool, liberating breeze. I was free.

I walked out the door, leaving Keith standing alone in the living room, the squashed sushi bag still dangling from his hand.

My friends, Sarah and Chloe, met me at our favorite rooftop bar. They gasped when they saw me.

"Julia! You look incredible!" Sarah exclaimed, pulling me into a hug.

"What happened to you in Iceland?" Chloe asked, her eyes wide. "Did you find some ancient Viking magic?"

I laughed, a genuine, unburdened sound. "Something like that."

I told them about the overseas assignment. Their initial shock quickly turned to excitement.

"London? For five years?" Sarah shrieked, then quickly lowered her voice. "But… Keith? The wedding?"

"The engagement is off," I stated simply. "I' m taking the job."

Chloe' s jaw dropped. "That… that is the best news I' ve heard all year! I mean, no offense, but Keith was always a walking red flag."

"Understatement of the year," Sarah chimed in. "Remember that time he left you stranded at the airport because Kandice had a 'heart palpitation' from a bad coffee?"

"Or when he 'forgot' your birthday because he was 'mentoring' Kandice late?" Chloe added, rolling her eyes.

We clinked glasses, a toast to new beginnings. The conversation flowed easily, filled with laughter and plans for the future. For the first time in years, I felt seen, heard, and truly happy. We danced until our feet ached, talked until our voices were hoarse, and celebrated until the stars began to fade, ushering in the dawn.

When I finally hailed a cab to head home, the city lights blurred into a kaleidoscope of colors. I closed my eyes, a single, potent thought echoing in my mind: This is what freedom tastes like.

And I wasn' t going to give it up for anyone.
