The Day I Stopped Waiting Chapter 1

On Thanksgiving Day, the top trending post on social media was about me.

The headline blared: "Investment Banking Titan Caleb Vaughn and Son, Mason, Charm Charity Gala Alongside Muse Sienna Hayes."

I shut off the live stream, my hand moving in a slow, deliberate motion.

My phone rang the moment I pulled the Beef Wellington I’d poured my heart into for our Thanksgiving dinner from the oven.

"Darling."

My husband's voice tumbled out, a frantic rush of excuses. "The gala's schedule was changed at the last minute, so I—"

Then, cutting through his words, I heard Mason's bright, childish laughter. "Daddy, Sienna said I can go to her house for ice cream tonight!"

I stared at the anniversary dinner I had so lovingly prepared.

The rich aroma of the steak began to fade, and the wax on the candlesticks hardened into cold, lifeless tears.

"Don't bother explaining," I heard myself say, my voice a hollow echo in the suddenly silent kitchen.

"I get it."

And in that moment, I understood with chilling clarity. This time, Caleb, I wasn't just done. I was gone. So were you. And so was Mason.

When Caleb Vaughn came home with our son, Mason, I was sitting at the bar, nursing a glass of wine.

Before, I would have rushed to serve him a bowl of hot soup, kissing his cheeks, still flushed and cold from the winter air.

Today, I didn't move a muscle.

"Mommy, why didn't you hug me?"

"Juliet, you didn't make soup?"

I swirled the deep red liquid in my glass. "I was busy."

Caleb poured himself a glass of water, assuming I'd tend to Mason as I always did.

"Juliet, don't tell me you're still mad about the gala."

"It was a last-minute fundraiser for the foundation. Sienna was a major donor. Mason threw a fit about wanting to go on stage, and what was I supposed to do, say no in front of everyone? I was in a bind, so I asked Sienna to help out. How many more times do I have to spell this out for you?"

Mason chimed in, his little voice sharp with indignation. "Mommy, you're being mean for no reason again! Sienna never makes that ugly face!"

Caleb ruffled Mason's hair, a smirk touching his lips as he glanced at me. "Hear that? Even your son can't stand you anymore."

"For God's sake, Juliet, can you be reasonable? I'm trying to be civil. Even if you're determined to throw a fit, you need to know when to quit!"

My voice was eerily calm. "I'm not angry. I get it."

I got everything. I understood it all far too well.

Just like last year, when an acute appendicitis attack left me drenched in a cold sweat, convulsing from the pain.

On the other end of the line, Caleb had sighed with impatience. "I'm in the middle of something. I'll be over soon. Just call an ambulance yourself."

Then I heard Sienna’s panicked voice in the background. "Caleb, please hurry! My car broke down and I’m so scared out here alone."

I lay on the cold floor and dialed 911 myself.

When it was time to sign the surgical consent form, in the space for a family member's signature, my trembling hand wrote a single word: "None."

Caleb studied my face, his expression softening into a weary sigh. "Juliet, do you always have to be like this?"

I met his gaze evenly. "Like what?"

The room fell into a tense, heavy silence.

He suddenly pulled a beautifully wrapped gift box from his briefcase and tossed it onto the bar. "Here. Happy anniversary."

I glanced at the bracelet inside. The inscription on the box read: "To Sienna."

The corners of my mouth twisted into a humorless smile. So, even my anniversary gift was a secondhand thought.

"Thank you."

There wasn't a trace of emotion in my voice.

Caleb shot to his feet. "Mason and I went to a lot of trouble to get that for you, and you can't even muster a smile? You don't like it?"

"I like it. Thank you."

My fingers traced the glaring "Sienna" engraved on the box.

Caleb looked as if he was choking on his own frustration.

After all, I used to treasure any gift from him. I’d even cherished the fifty-dollar kitchen scale he once gave me for my birthday, putting it away like a jewel and cooing that he was the best husband in the world.

For years, that was my part to play. And I never strayed from the script.
