Chapter 6

In the Teeth of the Pack

The blood moon cast long, twisted shadows across the forest floor, painting the trees crimson and silver. Every branch, every rustle of leaves, was magnified in Aiden's senses. He could hear the faintest whisper of a mouse scuttling across the underbrush, the distant heartbeat of a deer, and somewhere far off, the pack moving like a storm in the night.

He crouched on the ridge overlooking the valley where the Black Hollow Pack had gathered. The Alpha would be here tonight, Aiden knew. Every instinct in his body screamed it. His wolf growled low in his chest-not in hunger, but in anticipation.

Evelyn crouched beside him, notebook in hand, flashlight shut off. "Are you sure about this?" she whispered.

Aiden's jaw tightened. "I have to know what we're dealing with. I have to find the Alpha before he finds me."

She didn't answer, but she didn't protest either. Her trust in him was solid-unwavering. For a moment, Aiden almost allowed himself a flicker of gratitude before the forest snapped back into focus.

The pack moved with terrifying precision. Aiden watched as shadows shifted across the valley floor: wolves leaping between trees, men in human form with subtle lupine movements, and the unmistakable silhouette of Jacob Thorn, the Alpha, standing tall, surveying his pack like a king of predators.

Aiden's claws itched in his hands-not physical, but primal. His pulse quickened. He was not just watching. He was becoming part of it.

He lowered himself to the forest floor, letting instinct take over. The human part of him whispered caution. The wolf part whispered opportunity. The two collided in a tense, humming rhythm.

"Stay hidden," he muttered to Evelyn. "If they sense me too soon..."

"They'll kill you," she finished for him.

"Exactly," he said, his voice low, almost a growl.

Aiden moved closer to the pack, shadows clinging to his form. Every step was deliberate, controlled, guided by instincts that felt both foreign and familiar. He could smell every wolf, every human, every hint of fear, dominance, and aggression. It was intoxicating-and terrifying.

Jacob spoke, his voice a low rumble carried through the night. "We can feel him. The heir of the Hollow walks among us."

A ripple of growls and whispers passed through the pack. The Alpha raised a hand, and the movement stilled the wolves. "Let him come. Let him prove he is worthy."

Aiden crouched behind a boulder, teeth bared in a silent snarl, eyes glowing faint gold. The wolf inside him surged, eager, hungry, ready to test the limits of the pack's challenge.

And then a scream shattered the forest.

A young wolf shifter had stumbled into the wrong territory, caught in a trap set by villagers outside the Hollow. The pack immediately reacted, tearing through the underbrush, but Aiden saw an opportunity.

He leapt from his hiding spot, moving faster than human eyes could track, intercepting the struggling shifter before the pack could punish it. The wolf collapsed in his arms, trembling, eyes wide with terror.

"Stay with me," Aiden murmured, voice deep, primal. "I'm not your enemy."

The pack paused, watching, waiting. Aiden felt the Alpha's gaze like a knife against his back. He knew Jacob was assessing him, testing him-seeing whether he would dominate, submit, or betray.

He set the wolf down gently, stepping back. "I protect the weak," he said firmly, wolf instincts humming under his skin. "That is my choice."

A growl rolled through the pack, low and warning. Jacob's amber eyes glittered. "Interesting," the Alpha said softly. "The heir has honor... or arrogance. We shall see which consumes him first."

For hours, Aiden shadowed the pack, learning their rhythms, their hierarchy, and their deadly efficiency. Every movement revealed something new: the way they communicated without words, the subtle shifts of posture that indicated dominance or fear, the unspoken rules of their world.

He began to see patterns, weak points in their defenses, and the Alpha's quirks-the pauses before he strikes, the way he tests loyalty, the small, almost imperceptible signs of weariness.

And through it all, the wolf inside him hummed, urging him to push further, to hunt, to embrace the power that had always been his.

Evelyn followed at a distance, recording everything. "Aiden... you're walking a fine line," she whispered at one point. "One wrong move, and they'll kill you."

"I know," he said, eyes fixed on the Alpha. "But I have to understand them. If I can't face him as a man... I'll face him as a wolf."

Night deepened, and the forest grew colder. Aiden finally saw an opening-a way to get close to Jacob without being detected. He approached a clearing where the Alpha often stood, the silver moonlight catching his figure perfectly.

The wolf inside him surged, claws digging into the earth, senses screaming. He could smell every detail: the Alpha's blood, the subtle scent of his pack's hierarchy, even the faint tang of fear beneath Jacob's confidence.

Aiden stepped forward, slow, deliberate, his eyes locked on Jacob. The Alpha turned, as if sensing him, amber eyes narrowing.

"So, the heir walks openly," Jacob said, voice calm, dangerous. "Come closer. Show me what you are."

Aiden did. Every muscle coiled, every sense heightened. The human part of him wanted to speak, to reason, to plead. The wolf part wanted to dominate, to fight, to tear apart the Alpha's control.

And then a voice broke through-Evelyn, from the shadows. "Aiden, be careful! He'll-"

But Aiden didn't hear her. He stepped into the clearing, standing tall, his claws gleaming faintly in the moonlight.

Jacob smiled. "Impressive. But do you control the wolf... or does it control you?"

Aiden growled, teeth bared, eyes glowing gold. "I control both."

Jacob's expression hardened. He lunged with inhuman speed, and Aiden met him halfway. The collision sent both of them skidding across the earth. Claws and teeth met, the sound echoing through the forest like a drum of war.

Aiden could feel the wolf inside him surging, hungry, powerful. The Alpha was strong, but Aiden had something Jacob could never have: the balance between man and monster.

The fight stretched through the clearing, every move a test of strength, cunning, and instinct. Jacob was relentless, but Aiden adapted, using his wolf senses to anticipate, to dodge, to strike with precision.

Finally, Aiden pinned Jacob to the ground, claw against throat, teeth bared. His heart pounded, wolf and man both roaring in victory.

"Yield," Aiden said, voice a mix of growl and command. "Or die."

Jacob laughed, a harsh, bitter sound. "Impressive, heir. You have strength... but strength alone will not end the Hollow."

Aiden hesitated. The wolf inside him demanded the kill, urged him to finish it. But the man-the detective-hesitated. He saw Jacob's eyes, the cunning, the fury, but also something else: a twisted respect, a reflection of the bloodline he inherited.

"I will end this," Aiden said slowly, releasing his grip. "But on my terms."

Jacob rose slowly, amber eyes locking with Aiden's gold. "Then we shall see who survives the blood moon."

The fight had drawn the attention of the rest of the pack. Wolves circled the clearing, watching, growling, waiting for the next move. Aiden's chest heaved, pulse racing, instincts screaming.

Evelyn stepped into the clearing, hands raised. "He's... he's not alone," she said quietly. "He can fight them."

The wolves hesitated. The Alpha nodded, acknowledging the threat.

Aiden's senses picked up another presence-a new wolf in the distance. Larger, stronger, darker. The Alpha's rival, or perhaps an ally. Either way, it was a sign: the Hollow was stirring. The blood moon had awakened something ancient.

Hours later, exhausted, bleeding, and trembling from the exertion, Aiden and Evelyn returned to the forest ridge.

"You did it," she said softly. "You survived... and controlled it."

"I don't know if I did it right," Aiden admitted, wiping blood from his hands. "But I did it."

The wolf inside him purred, stretching, tasting the air. The power was intoxicating, but the man inside Aiden knew he could not let it consume him. Not yet.

The blood moon shone high, crimson and full, casting long shadows across the forest. Somewhere below, the Black Hollow Pack regrouped, planning their next move.

Aiden turned to Evelyn. "We can't wait for them to strike. We have to move first. We need to find the source of the curse, the Grimoire, and stop this... before it spreads beyond Black Hollow."

Evelyn nodded. "And if we fail?"

Aiden's eyes gleamed, human and wolf intertwined. "Then the Hollow will claim everything. But we won't fail."

Somewhere in the forest, a howl answered his, deep and resonant. It was not a challenge. It was recognition.

The heir of the Hollow had awoken. And the hunt had only just begun.
